We were looking for something interesting to see in Dorset in November and most of the indoor attractions were closed so this drew us to Athelhampton House and Gardens. We arrived shortly after the cafe opened at 10.00 and knew we would have a wait until the house opened at 11.00. The day was horrendous with gail force winds and torrential rain so a look around the gardens was sadly not on, although the views of the gardens from the house looked wonderful.
We were warmly greeted when we arrived and decided to have some freshments, but there was no indication of what they provided and a lovely lady asked what we wanted, but seemed surprised when we said we had no idea of what they offered, only then were we offered a menu. The misunderstanding over, we were served with tea and Dorset apple juice (which was absolutely delicious).
We had to ask how to get to the house (no signs to point the way) and scurried through the storm to the front door where we were greeted by a lovely lady who explained the route we should take and that there were no restrictions to sitting on any of the chairs or touching anything. Big surprise, as we are used to rooms being roped off and strict restrictions.
A gentleman was giving a talk about the connection between the house and Thomas Hardy which was very interesting.
In a nutshell, the house is one of the most incredible places, from Tudor onwards with a fascinating history and a warm homely feed. All of the staff were friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic and we could not recommend it highly enough. An independently owned house, sympathetically restored and way better than any National Trust house we have been to.

Fantastic day out,the house brought to life with the Tudors,the music ,dancing ,singers,archery,all amazing . Brilliant ,Athelhampton!!

Really enjoyed our first visit to the house which was during the Living History October Half Term event. The skilful re-enactors brought the beautiful house to life especially with the lovely music, singing and dancing throughout the day. The food being cooked for the Dinner smelled wonderful and looked amazing. Being able to watch the Dinner being served and enjoyed by the group was interesting and unusual.The gardens are beautiful too and it was a special day to remember.

What a great day out for my family and I. We visited Athelhampton House especially to experience the Tudor Week and it was brilliant. The troupe of living history specialists brought Tudor times to life in a way that enthralled us all (11yr, 15yr and adult). We all learnt so much from interacting with the wonderful characters, including sampling food and singing with the Ladies of the house. My initially grumpy 11yr old boy was transformed into a happy one that wanted to go back after (a very good) lunch in the house's cafe.

Very interesting place to visit. Knowledgeable staff in the house to provide lots of information,should you want it. Took about an hour and a half to tour house and gardens at a gentle pace.
Restaurant was also very good with a reasonable choice on the menu.

Visited Athelhampton House today and what a delightful place it is. The house is beautiful and its history is fascinating. The gardens , even in October were so colourful and tranquil. The staff were a delight and the cafe food was great. Thank you Emma who made our visit so interesting. We will return!

What a truly fabulous house and gardens to visit.
The gardens even in October are beautiful and then we entered the house and were given a very interesting historical talk about the house and the restoration from a lovely lady called Lesley. Loved the fact that we were able to touch the antique furniture and got a real sense of the house through the different ages. The present owner is doing a magnificent job of bringing the house back to its old former glory . Loved the newly discovered kitchen fireplace.
Visited the small but very efficient cafe afterwards and had lovely homemade soup. We will definitely visit again

We had a wonderful afternoon here (admittedly, it did help that we went on a sunny late summer day). The house itself has a remarkably well preserved late medieval core, with Elizabethan additions. It was carefully restored in the late 19th century, and the current owner has sensitively refurnished it. The gardens, also late 19th century, are splendid. We are not on the whole great garden connoisseurs, but here the flowers and the many fountains created a very special atmosphere.

We loved this beautiful Tudor house and gardens and the on site restaurant. It was quiet when we visited and it seemed a very peaceful place. It wasn't the best time of year to visit gardens, but we could appreciate the design and the stream around the garden. The rooms in the house were interesting, with helpful information available and a projection in the cellar, which explained the potential for ghostly sightings. We particularly liked the billiard room and its history (and the secret room).
The Coach House restaurant was light and airy, and excellent for coffee and cake/scones (you don't need to pay entry to the site to access it). An HHA property.

This is the house to see if you want late medieval/Tudor architecture. The house has been thoughtfully interpreted. You will receive an impression of what it would have been like to live and work here in centuries past with lots of skilled investigation evident. Altogether a worthwhile visit.
