Alfred Munnings hated modern art....or so they say.
He might have drunkenly raged against modernism, but there are clear signs of a loose brush stroke, bordering on abstract and an appreciation of like the next impressionist.
I love museums in the houses an artist lived and worked.
The house is any edwardian gentleman's dream and the studio will be the envy of most artists. I personally found the sketchy paintings the best. A real treat for an adult connoisseur of art.

If you are looking for an art museum this is it fantastic collection.. the garden cafe/ tea rooms are definitely a place to visit lovey service and great food.

Always a delight to spend time in this peaceful, beautiful place.
New management of the cafe is proving to be very successful - we had a lovely lunch of quiche and salads, and the selection of cakes was wonderful. We'll need to go back to try them all out :-)

A truly delightful museum. If you think that Munnings just painted racehorses you are in for a pleasant surprise. Charming well informed staff and an excellent cafe. Can't wait to go again.

Splendid. It’s clear that everyone who works/volunteers there is an enthusiast and keen to put on a good show. The house is a most comfortable place in which to spend a couple of hours. The paintings are beautifully displayed along with excellent descriptions. Amongst them are snippets from newspaper cuttings and also letters that offer context for the lives lived in the house. Two additional things that I enjoyed – one was the way that the floor creaked ever so slightly under the soft carpet; and when I asked whether I could perhaps sit in one of the armchairs the answer was “yes – we’re not the National Trust you know!” And I’d say all the better for it. We had paid for a single entry, but hoping that we’d return to Dedham, we made the decision to ‘upgrade’ to an annual pass. It’s that sort of place – makes you feel good.

The Garden Cafe at Munnings has helpful & friendly staff, the food is home made and delicious - and their cakes ..delish! Birthday celebrations in the wonderful grounds happening the day I enjoyed my tasty lunch. You have to go!

What a wonderful art gallery! Seeing some of the most famous equine paintings (plus other subjects) in the home of the artist for over 40 years gives a much better insight into the man than seeing them in a gallery alongside other paintings. My husband spent the most time in a museum that I've ever known him to spend, and was almost speechless when he came out. The large canvases are of course very impressive, but so are the small sketch books. There are some good interpretation panels to give context. The tranquil setting and on-site cafe really added to the experience.

This is a really good small art gallery in a lovely old house, still furnished as it was in Munnings' day. I could move in tomorrow! The art centres on his horses: he is famous for his racing pictures and there are several, also country life, hounds and other animals (pigs!), portraits of clients on their favoured horses and landscapes. He used a bright palette, so pictures look modern and attractive. There is also some nice sculpture: I hadn't been aware of his sculpture so it was a pleasant surprise.

The Munnings Art Museum did not disappoint! I have been waiting many months to visit UK and have wanted to view Munnings' works in the flesh for a long time! His use of colour and light are unsurpassed and you do not gave to be an art connoisseur to enjoy this museum. Anyone who loves the English countryside, horses and dogs will be inspired by the artist's wonderful landscapes and portraits. His horse racing scenes in particular capture movement, excitement, anticipation and the innate beauty of the Thoroughbred racehorse.
A visit is highly recommended.

What a gem. If you enjoy art this is a gallery you dare not miss. Beautiful house. Paintings, sketches and sculptures displayed throughout the artist's working life. Shop well stocked with postcards, prints etc of all your favourite works. Staff very knowledgeable and friendly. Nice bistro type cafe where light bites and yummy cakes are sold. Lovely view with horses in the field next door. Staff in cafe very obliging. If you're out for the day, great walks to Flatford/Maningtree from the door. You might even fancy going on an art course - very reasonable! There was a course whilst we were there, where people were sketching/painting two Suffolk Punches (horses not boxing!!)
