My friend and I were the only visitors when we explored this fascinating house. Although the birthplace of composer Holst, the experience has been rebranded as the Victorian house so doesn’t just give the history of the composer but a unique insight into the life of a middle class Victorian family. It’s literally like walking back into the past.
The audio visual presentations were informative and entertaining as was the staff member who gave us an informal chat.
Children would be fascinated by this place and there are plenty of hands on activities to keep them amused.
Well worth a visit, not just for Holst enthusiasts but anyone with an interest in the past.

The main attraction to this house, number 4 Clarence Road was that I once lived at No 3. I was intrigued as to who lived next door. I was surprised at how informative the visit was spread out over 4 floors. Of course the The Planets is Holst most famous works but it was interesting to hear other pieces of work as well. Worth a visit.

Far more interesting than we expected.
The upstairs film about Holst is really good and well worth the time to watch.
We expected to be out in half an hour and were much longer because we were drawn in.

Birthplace of Gustav Holst (1874-1934), composer of (of course) "The Planets" but also a lot of other much less played work, this is also a museum of the everyday life of late-Victorian Cheltenham. Pantry and kitchen, a child's bedroom, the drawing room and paintings (which seemed cosy rather than the stuffiness we have associated with Victoriana - also some of the house movingly reminded me of my Grandma's house. Then it's to the ground floor and GH's piano and items more closely associated with him - as he didn't actually spend most of his life here, and moved to London as soon as he was able - as the very informative film "In the Bleak Midwinter", which the visitor can watch here, tells you. I don't think of GH as a Victorian composer, more 20th century as he very quickly threw off the strictures of Victorian-ness and was advanced even by the European standards of his day. I've long been a fan, having lived for years over the road from St Paul's School where he taught. That's in Brook Green, just down the road from Hammersmith, and there we've named three pieces by him. His daughter Imogen was also a fascinating person - composer, music teacher and conductor. Then there are the connections with Left-wing politics including William Morris (he of the Arts and Crafts movement) and the Red Vicar, Conrad Noel.
All in all a fascinating collection which handles its two disparate parts (Victorian household museum and life of a not-really-Victorian musician) very well indeed.

What an interesting museum set over 4 floors of this Victorian house.
We were greeted by a very nice friendly gentleman, who gave us some background into the house, along with 2 little booklets that helped us when we were in each room.
The first thing we did was listen to an interesting informative video, explsing all about Holst and the other families who have also lived here.
We then started to explore each room, starting in the basement, we saw the larder the laundry room and kitchen. We then went onto the ground floor where you see Holst's piano and gramophone, amongst other items.
We then went to the 1st floor where there is another very interesting video to watch on the life of a maid in the house, if you have an extra 40 mind then there us another video to see about Holst's life and his work.
On this floor we saw his mother's bedroom, then
onto the the top floor where we saw the play room/nursery and the maids room. If you are in or near Cheltenham this is a must see museum, there is a car park just around the corner.

We stumbled upon this museum by accident and decided to take a look. From the outside it looks very small, however it is spread over 4 floors. A very helpful lady introduced the house to us and suggested our starting point, as well as giving us paper information. She also told us our tickets are valid for a year.
We watched the introduction film downstairs before wandering around the whole house. There were two further films we could have watched but we’d a busy schedule so declined on this occasion.
The house was interesting with lots of artefacts to see, without being overcrowded.
We were given some walking information once we’d finished, about other places we might like to visit in Cheltenham.

I’ve been to this museum on a number of occasions. As a parent, as a filmmaker and as a visitor. The Holst Victorian House Museum is like a home locked in time. The more you go, the more you see and the more that you really feel the journey of this house which is sealed in time. Bravo. Fabulous museum and experience. It’s a ‘house’ where I personally felt really ‘at home’. Thank you.

Very interesting museum with friendly and knowledgeable staff. If you are a classical music fan this is a definite place to visit when in Cheltenham. Plenty to read and listen to and also an extract of the film ' In the Bleak Midwinter' to watch.

Very educational and an enjoyable visit. Staff and volunteers all very knowledgeable and helpful. Centrally located so able to visit on foot as parking close by is payable.

Thank you very much your email. Unfortunately the museum isn't accessible for a wheelchair user. There are steps leading up the property and then stairs on each level. I am very sorry about this but this is due to the period nature of the property. The Wilson - the main art gallery & museum in Cheltenham is fully accessible.

Train from London Euston? Also, someone mention a long walk from car park [or in my case from station] - how long? I am compromised.

There is a train from London Paddington to Cheltenham. You can then take a taxi to the museum or to Cheltenham town centre, which is a 10 minute walk from the museum. There is also a D bus which goes from the station to the town centre. The D buses run regularly throughout the day. A taxi ride takes about 10-20 mins depending on traffic and will cost around £8.

It is important to point out to visitors that the museum has been closed since June due to flooding that took place in the house during heavy rains. As a frequent visitor to Cheltenham and a lover of Holst's music, I wonder if museum staff can give an update on the progress and when the museum might re-open - what was the extent of the damage? I imagine most of it was in the downstairs area? Best wishes and hope it's open soon!
