I was there as part of the sea cadets and it was a very interesting experience to go and see the places a typical passenger would be unable to view. We did not sail however I believe it would be pleasant sailing onboard.

100% recommend this experience. Wonderful ship, and the crew are ALL very welcoming and well informed. Great bar, good food, and you can even take a good long look in the engine room and bridge once you are underway. Take the family for a truly great day out!

We joined the ship for the, to watch the Bournemouth Air festival.
We have been before, and really loved it then as now. There is something about travelling on a ship you don’t get with anything else, particularly a vintage steamship.
The pace is relaxing, the crew are friendly and well informed, it is just wonderful. We hope to travel again soon. Would definitely recommend.

The Ship was a great experience. We went on a cruise to see the Bournemouth Air Festival 2nd Day in August 2024. The booking was easy, dates were changed at our request with no bother at all. We were given clear joining instructions well beforehand. It was all stress free and easy. The cruise was very good with all the crew being friendly and helpful. The facilities on board were very good for our purposes and we enjoyed the Air Festival in comfort.

Experienced the Bournemouth Airshow 2024 whilst on board Shieldhall for the middle display day. This was my third time for viewing the display from the ship. Had a great day out. The ship is amazing and all the volunteers work so hard to keep this important part of history alive. Will definitely be booking for one of the ships many cruises again. It’s a great experience for everyone.

An outstanding experience on a floating piece of history! SS Shieldhall is a fantastically restored steam ship, and a unique piece of maritime history. With full access to all the really key and interesting areas of the ship, this is an opportunity that should not be missed. The crew and volunteers are all very friendly and extremely knowledgeable and made our trip a really fantastic day. We will be booking again even though it was a round trip of 450+ miles to get to her!
This should really be on everyone’s bucket list - I recommend it for everyone!

My 11 year old son and I were staying at Dolphin Quays in Poole Dorset.
We both love aircraft and anything steam, so when we saw the Shieldhall moored up advertising trips to watch the Bournemouth Airshow, actually out at sea we grabbed the chance.
It turned out to be a fantastic day, weather was perfect and the relaxed atmosphere on board was really welcome. The boat has open access to the engine room, boiler room and the bridge. Almost go anywhere type of access. Would certainly recommend taking a trip on her. Just a lovely chilled out experience.

I booked some time ago to join the S.S. Shieldhall at Poole to view the Bournemouth Air Show, a combination of heratige ship and vintage aircraft. It was a glorious sunny day in late August with the potential joy of vintage machinery and it didn't disappoint! We started with a leisurely cruise to anchor off Bournemouth beach in order to have a front seat view of the air display. We steamed past stately Brownsea Castle and the opulent Sandbanks. The ship was beautifully presented with smart paintwork and the gentle drum of the steam engine ( not that frenzied vibration you endure on modern ferries) uniformed staff were most curtious. The saloon provided hot and cold drinks and a range of snacks and meals all accompanied by a swift and very pleasant service.
At the end of a ten hour cruise it was frankly not long enough and I can't wait to go again.

We had an amazing day out on the Shieldhall in August 2024.
The ship departed from Southampton docks at around 10:30 and began it's journey towards Portsmouth historic dockyard. The sailing was incredibly smooth and we were able to sit outside on the deck and watch the sight of Southampton whilst soaking up some summer sunshine.
In Portsmouth we saw a few of the Royal Navy aircraft carriers which was amazing and HMS Warrior. There was commentary on board explaining some historical points along the journey.
Refreshments were top notch. There is a small cafe and indoor seating area if you need to purchase food and drink on board but you are also allowed to take food and drinks with you, should you wish.
The facilities were all clean and tidy including the toilets.
I would recommend going down to the boiler house whilst you are on board. It's quite interesting down there, but very hot!!
I would also recommend you go upstairs to The Bridge to see what it looks like to drive the ship.
There is a small shop for souvenirs but we didn't go in there.

Yes I think so. There is a restaurant on board with some very reasonable prices. However you can also sit on deck with a picnic. Really chilled...

Thank you for your comments, volunteering is not constrained by distance. On the trip you were on, in the crew we had one volunteer from Skye, two from Durham and one from Morecombe and several from London / Nth of the M4. Our Chairman is from Devon and we have other volunteers from the South West too. If you're interested in volunteering, and we need all sort of skills to essentially run business, not just maritime or engineering skills there's lots of information and contact details on our website.
Glad you enjoyed your trip - so did we! Definitely the best place to watch the airshow.

Hello Nigel, there are a number of places where can stay which is near the ship. The nearest is the Holiday Inn which is about a 10 minute walk to the ship.

Ive only had Teas ,Coffees ,Snacks etc and they are at resonable prices.....I recommend their Bacon Roll....Ive not had a "Set Meal" or Alcohol etc ,But im sure those will be favourable.

On a Cruise last Weekend I also noticed a Wheelchair user in the Lounge/Dining area ,Enjoying Themselves as Well....There is plenty of room up front on the foredeck with Wooden Seating ,plenty of Legroom....All areas of the Ship are open such as Bridge,Upper Decks,Engine Room,Gift Shop etc ,But Steep Steps are involved to access any of these areas.....However the Crew are very Friendly ,Helpful & Accomodating and Will Willingly Help You if You ask them.
