We popped in here in the afternoon and it was quite busy then and the beers - particularly the Butty back were on tip top form. Lovely large cobbled outside are to the rear of the pub.

Old world pub, real ale wooden panels, different rooms outside area, apparently they have music, seems a great place to ho.

Always visit when in the area. A well kept and well run pub, four rooms, to screens for sport (one room had both Six Nations rugby and Premiership football showing at the same time!)
Good outside area for drinks, sheltered for smokers and a great venue for their live music nights. Good range of Wye Valley ales and various lagers, at good prices.

I attended The Barrels last night. It was busy with a lovely atmosphere but we didn't stay long after I was scolded by an older barmaid.
I ordered two whisky and cokes, they were served to us in pint glasses (presumably because it was very busy, and the bar were low/had run out of their usual glassware).
This wasn't an issue at all (although this wasn't explained to us/apologised for at any stage, just given to us) but just as she handed them to us, I saw that some shorter glasses were being shelved from the glass washer. I asked if I could have my drink in a shorter glass, the response - "if I had one of those, I would've given it to you, wouldn't I?!" was barked at me with a disproportionate scowl. I was a bit taken aback and some surrounding customers looked shocked too.
I'd like to add the caveat that it was busy an inordinately busy evening, however, I have worked in the service/bar industry for over 12 years, on all occasions (very busy Christmas/NYE etc where we would frequently run out of glassware). The courteous (and normal) procedure would be to apologise for the unusual glassware, and perhaps explain why it's being used. Not to shout at a customer so loudly that 5 or 6 other customers can hear.
Again, I understand it can get very busy but customers aren't a sounding board for stressed staff.
I have been coming to the Barrels for years but this experience has put me off coming again which is a real shame (for me, anyway).

Just appalling inflexible jobsworth attitude from two individuals at this pub. My near 19 yr old son travelled from near malvern, as designated driver, with his friends to watch the rugby cup final last night and was thrown out just before kick off. On being asked to prove ID at the bar (he looks early 20s) he realised he'd not put his driving license into the case of a new phone. Obtained a message from his mom (!) with a picture of both his license and his passport but refused service. Was happy to forgo the one beer he'd have as driving and went to to sit with friends (who all look younger but had ID) but was then approached and told to leave. Watched 1st half of the game on phone in car on his own. Honestly some people in this country - I dispair and certainly would not recommend this pub.

Hands down the best pub in Hereford, if what you're after - like us - is a good selection of Wye Valley's real ales (Butty Bach in particular), plus various lagers and ciders and all the usual optics, to be supped in the comfort of a comfortable, friendly, all-welcoming pub within easy walking distance of the city centre. Very highly recommended indeed.

Since being introduced to the area and the annual Beer on the Wye by a few local friends, a group of us journey to Hereford at least twice a year. Barrels is ALWAYS a stop on our (sadly) brief visits. With a great atmosphere, plenty of room and great ale you would be mad not to check it out at some point!
The decor is a bit dated, but honestly you'd call that "traditional" owing to how long the place has been standing, and its history. Can't wait to visit again in a few weeks!

Another proper old style pub and it was a great experience as a visitor to the town. Friendly and efficient bar staff and great choice of beers, ales and lagers.

Nice atmosphere reasonable prices great beer garden, close to town center. There is a pay and display carpark directly behind it not sure about food or if they do food just had drinks.

Ich war schon öfter in The Barrels und fand es immer wieder ein schönes Erlebnis. Mehr ein urtümlicher englischer Pub mit tollen Ales (wechselnd). Rustikal eingerichtet und meistens gefüllt. Das Publikum gemischt aber meist locker und nett. Ein absolutes Must Go

Well stocked bar, not sure of the quality of the wine though as more a beer man!
