Great place for the cognicenti but less so for Mr average (me!). The guide did stress that every guide gave their own tour and maybe we would have been better off with a different guide but it is what it is.
I had hoped to learn more of the background of the place but the tour was more about the great art that they have (which is not a favourite topic of mine. The guide talked a lot and there was not a lot of information available so I did not learn much about the place. It has some recent historical connections(I cannot remember who's relations lived there) and a number on the people on the tour were there specifically for this connection.
If you are an art enthusiast and treat it as a small art gallery then it is fine but as an interesting architectural gem - not for you.
PS separate review of the tea room is 3* at best

Had a wonderful relaxing afternoon within beautiful scenery. A lovely little cafe that sells homemade cakes and teas set within the grounds of a Jacobean house. Lots to discover! Would love to visit again

My Spouse and I decided to visit Hellens as it has a very long and intriguing history.
Our excellent tour guide took a small party through a few rooms as the family still resides in the house.
I loved the art works by Lely and items belonging to Queen Anne Boleyn.
Hellens has much character and atmosphere.
Well behaved dogs are allowed within the house. There is also an area they can be walked off lead.
The tearoom does a small but tasty selection of cakes, scones and soup.
Great service from the pretty young lady (who sang a lovely song in German).
Thank you for a happy and memorable visit.

Fantastic trip to Hellens. Beautiful setting and the tour of the house was so good. The history and portraits exceeded our expectations. Lovely grounds and wonderful homemade cake and soup. What really made our visit was the wonderful staff from the lady who made the cakes and soup to the beautiful girl who served us and spoke superb german to the german visitor we had with us, and the very knowledgeable tour guide. We were late and missed our tour tbut no problem in letting us join the next one. Highly recommend and we will definitely be back.

This place is really special. A quirky homely house with astonishing artefacts and history and a welcoming vibe sitting in grounds which range from a physic garden (all the medicines and poisons you could possibly need!)with C17th octagonal dovecote to ancient woodland , donkeys, sheep and a knot garden. It’s dog friendly and you can even picnic.The cosy tea room with sunny out door seating offers treats made with produce from the gardens and a roaring fire in winter. We loved the strawberry cake and scones served on elegant china. You book tours of the house which the guide makes very entertaining and full of facts but the grounds are free to enter in the season which I think is April to October though it’s not open every day. I’ve also been a few times to the super monthly produce market which, in line with Hellens’ keenness to foster sustainable local things, sells local produce and crafts. A fantastic place to visit. I’ll be back with friends and family.

Such an unexpected joy! History galore in a beautiful setting . Did a Sunday tour with newby guides Eddy & Sheila. They will be a great asset to the place. Their enthusiasm for history & love of the house was infectious. So many tales, some proven , others only word of mouth, but fascinating. I loved it so much that I booked another tour on the following Wednesday so I could spend more time soaking in the atmosphere & take photos , which I hadn't done the first time. Unfortunately the guide this time, Tim, had no evident love or interest in the place, was sarcastic, couldn't answer any questions, passed most things off as fakes & hurried us through the rooms, saying we had to be in the tea shop by 2 pm!
I still give 5 stars, & would go again, but wary of who guides the tour! The cream tea was lovely, and the grounds interesting though not large and are informal. Wish I lived closer, I'd volunteer as a guide myself!

This is a lovely manor home set in beautiful grounds. However, when we paid for a tour around the premises I felt the volunteer tour guide 'Tim' spoilt the experience. He was ever so negative about the building by constantly pointing out the rough state it was in, the concrete additions over the years and didn't have a clue about half of the artefacts in the rooms.
It was a shame his attitude was like this as it dampened the day.

This was a fab experience just outside the quaintly bamed much Marcle.
We cannot believe we d never found it before from Abergavenny
Do book the fascinating history tour ...we did 11 am with a most knowledgeable and gently humoured gentleman on 10th April
The house and grounds are equally interesting
Yummy cake and coffee ☕ rounded off a great 4 hours
We ll come back for the music and produce advertised

Our party of 10 had a personal guided tour of the building. Hellens is a fascinating building with a long and colourful history. Our guide was exceptionally knowledgeable and enthusiastic, telling Hellens story and describing the art works and features. The gardens and grounds are extensive - we would now like to visit these in the summer. The cream tea we had at the end was very welcome

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Hellene’s manor on Sunday. Guided house tour absolutely brilliant, so much history.
Lovely cream tea, lovely staff. The gardens need some TLC, but they are in need of volunteers to help. If only we lived closer we would be there offering to help.

Hello, not 100% sure, but would have thought so but I doubt if dogs would be allowed in the house.
