Living History
How amazing to find that this wonderful signal box has not been destroyed like so many other great railway structures from so called improvements. A marvellous insight into mechanical signalling. Brought back so many memories of my time in Abington Box on the West Coast Main Line between Beattock Summit and Carstairs Junction. Very Happy Days!!

Nice railway box

It appears quite fast if you are on the train. Nice old station with a lot of history. Recommended. .

A fascinating insight into railway signalling
The signalbox is lovingly restored and a cleverly designed computer system allows it to be worked as if a train is actually being run with bells and levers etc being operated as they were when the box was in operation. The volunteers are enthusiastic and knowledgeable and Tony Furse was particularly good at explaining things to the non expert, and especially children. Highly recommended to the enthusiast and non enthusiast alike.

Made very welcome
Turned up unannounced last Saturday, joining a group who were about to be given a guided tour. Excellent, knowledgable guides - all very friendly. Very good displays and hands-on time with signal levers. Not bad for a day when not usually open! So glad have managed to get to this museum. Thoroughly recommended.

A must for railway enthusiasts
The Signal box is open on certain days of the year and is maned by volunteer staff who are really into trains. The upper level is where the signal box has all it's workings, levers and things, and the lower level is full of memorabilia. I was with someone who is really into trains and he found enough similarly minded people to talk about their anoraks for ages. However, there were things for the kids too with a miniature steam train train to ride on, cost £1, and model railways that were running Thomas and his friends. I'm not into trains and even I found it mildly interesting and there was no entrance fee, just a donation box.

A lovely experience
We hadn't checked the opening hours when we went on a visit to St Albans. The very knowledgable ,enthusiastic and friendly volunteer Tony Furse didn't turn us away.He invited us in and for 2 hours he held us spell bound with his love for his work on this wonderful little Gem of railway workings and Grade11 listed Signal Box.The garden is also very nice and wildlife friendly. Not knowing anything about trains and railways, it was great to learn so much and feel that it was well worth a trip from Hampshire to see what can be achieved by a happy group of volunteers.
Thank you very much Tony from the happy trio on Wednesday 17 th July

Marvellous and fascinating

This place was saved as a result of a local group coming together and deciding that this was what they would do. Apart from its uniqueness and it is a fascinating look into what is almost a bygone age what was compelling about the visit was the knowledge and, what was far more important, the passion of the volunteers. And the brilliants is it location right on the railway itself so the trains are rushing by within a few yards continuously and provide the context that brings it all alive.

Brilliant couple of hours spent at the Signal Box. We cannot believe that despite having lived locally for over 40 years, we’ve never been here before! We also cannot believe that there is no entry charge.

The signal box and garden are fascinating - lots of things to do and to see BUT the place is made by it’s volunteers (especially John!). Without them, I’m not sure we would have had a clue what we were looking at! By the time we left, we had learned so, so much. It’s lovely that we could be so hands-on with history and engineering. We enjoyed stopping for a cuppa on a railway bench. So kind to provide squash, biccies, and a little gift on leaving to the little ones. We put a donation into the box as we left - we hope that the volunteers will be able to maintain and show off the signal box for generations to come. Our tip would be to bring some small notes/change - you might like to buy a card, a t-shirt, a cuppa and make a donation too......

Thank you for a lovely afternoon out - we will definitely be back.

Fascinating place to visit

Have been meaning to visit for ages and so glad we did, what an interesting place. We learnt so much and my boys enjoyed being able to work the signals. The old signs, lamps and lots of other railway memorabilia were wonderful as are the gardens. Every volunteer we spoke to was friendly and very knowledgeable and happy to have a chat, the little refreshment hut was a real bonus with a lovely cup of tea and even free juice and a biscuit for the boys. The talk in the signal box was fascinating and John certainly knew his stuff! Take the time to visit, you won't be disappointed.
