This is an excellent free to enter museum. The Ferriby Boat was a highlight for us. The exhibits are very good but some of the areas have cases of exhibits that are quite dark and hard to see the descriptions. Makes a good atmosphere but hard on the eyes! Can be combined with other museums in the area for a great day out. Fantastic Roman mosaics from Yorkshire and displayed in a creative way to educate.

We arrived with grandaughter and great grandson his face was magical sometimes he was frightened especially when he so the size of some of the exhibits but he asked lots of questions and was truly interested in what he saw we ended our visit with him picking a dinosaur from the gift shop excellent morning had by all

I had my tour today and it was fantastic. I enjoyed every bit of it . The tour guide was so detailed. The your was packed with so much information about Hull and its history. I highly recommend 💯 and its free .

Hier lernt man viel über die frühere Zeit und die Entwicklung dieser schönen Gegend. Historien- und Geschichtsfans kommen voll auf ihre Kosten. Sehr viel Information, teils auch wundervoll und unterhaltsam präsentiert. Auf jeden Fall sehenswert.

We arrived on a quiet October afternoon and were greeted by a pleasant lady who explained the layout and how to use the lifts. My wife uses a portable mobility scooter (the most popular make) and this just fitted into the wheelchair lifts, so we were able to go everywhere. Some of the corners were a bit tight, but scooter users will be used to doing the odd three-point turn.
The variety and scale of displays was astonishing. We'd not visited the East Riding before so were fascinated to learn all about its history, all the way back to the Stone Age.
Plenty of staff were on hand if we had any questions and the whole visit was just a really nice experience. Marvellous that this resource is provided free but donations are welcom from those who are able to help out.

In all honesty we only visited this museum to get some shelter from the rain! We were so pleased that we did. A lovely museum, giving the geology and history of the area. I was very impressed with how the museum was laid out in chronological fashion with reconstructions of buildings through the ages. There was a lot of supporting information which was clearly laid out.
I can recommend this museum.

Why not tell people what it is, an archeological museum? I didn’t know what it was until I walked through the doors.
Some very good fossils, Iron Age collections and Roman mosaics.
There are some ancient boats but information on this part is really poor. Is it the Hessle boat here and what happened to the Ferriby boats mentioned? There’s a lump of wood in a case, is that all that’s left? What’s happening now to the boat? The preservation spraying process seems to have stopped. What’s the plan?

This museum is crammed full of interesting exhibits. Proving the visitor with an over view of 10 000 years of history is not easy, but it's been done well!!!

Lovely little museum, it’s unusual to find museums that do a total history of a place. This museum started in prehistoric times up to Roman times. It was interesting to follow along! Free entry as well so little to complain about.

We visited the Hull & East Riding Museum in Hull during a short stay in the area, the museum is in one corner of the ‘old town’ area of the city known as ‘museum quarter’. Entrance is free though you may make a donation to the running of the museum if you so wish.
The museum gives an insight into past times of the area from prehistory to the Norman Conquest. Upon entry the visitor finds themselves confronted by a life-size mammoth before being immersed in a prehistoric ocean populated by long extinct sea creatures.
As visitors pass around the museum they will pass through Celtic, Roman, Saxon and Norman eras. The Celtic village is very atmospheric but the Roman era steals the show with rooms from a villa complete with mosaics and a market square to walk around. The Roman bath house has a wealthy Roman proudly entertaining his two male guests in his new bath house and the soundtrack mimics what he might be saying about his new acquisition.
We thought that a visit here would appeal to anyone with an interest in these periods of history and particularly children studying these subjects at school due to the historic recreations of these periods.
