I love walking in the Lakes and this had been on my list for a while! We had a really sunny day and parked in one of the car parks in Coniston. The walk was hard going! We did a circular 9 mile route and finished with a drink in the pub back at the car! Views are spectacular - well worth the hard work! It was very very windy at the top and cold so extra layers are a must. I’ve done Helvellyn and I would say this was harder, not for the faint hearted!

As we were staying in the Duddon Valley we wanted to complete a Coniston Old Man walk from the west side. We were recommended to drive to a small car park (free) near to Long House which is located off the minor road which goes all the way through the valley and up a narrow side road marked with a direction sign ‘Coniston unsuitable for road vehicles’. It is okay as far as the car park which marks the western end of the Walna Scar Road. From here the walk begins as a gradual ascent up to Brown Pike. The route then follows the fell tops passing Buck Crag, Dow Crag before dropping down to Goat’s Hawse before the climb once again to Coniston Old Man. Going back we detoured to another summit located North of Coniston Old Man before following the path back in the opposite direction.
It was quite a long day with the walk measured at just under nine miles but well worth it for the views and the feat of completing two ‘Wainwrights ‘ in one day. Good footwear and rainproof/windproof clothing essential. The terrain was not too difficult and generally was easy to follow. The paths quite dry but obviously because of the elevation there are a few stiff ascents and descents but all on paths with very little scrambling.
The views are spectacular all the way along the fell tops.

I was recommended this hike by a work colleague. I was told it was tough but you were rewarded with breathtaking views. With the weather on my side and it being my birthday, I relished the challenge. I spent the previous day in Windermere and Grasmere.
So the car park had spaces and the machine was out of order. Great no need to pay £4. There was a map and sign post and an easy gravel path to follow. I had no idea how long it would take or the elevation. I just went for an explore.
I had two large cups of coffee and a Yorkie for breakfast lol. I kept the packed lunch in the car for my return. The hike seemed relatively easy at first, steady incline and weather was perfect. The path meandering and easy underfoot. Several dog walkers said hello and couples exchanged smiles.
Then the fun starts, this is where you’re tested. The incline gets steeper and you clamber over rocks, pebbles and stones and need to pace yourself. The terrain itself is fine in dry conditions. I had hiking boots on and there was no issue. The views are stunning. Whilst I took a raincoat as a precaution in the event that the weather changed, I needn’t had bothered.
Two thirds of the way up is a lake. Low Water Tarn. This was an ideal resting point. I sat and took photos and admired the views. After fifteen mins or so, I continued. Now I was feeling the burn and having not prepared properly, I was on the brink of turning around and leaving it for another time.
Then a man far older than me passed me with two hiking poles. “ Keep going he said “ My reply was I’m knackered. He was wearing shorts and a vest and had a North Wales accent. So I said “Yached Da” and he smiled. We had a bit of cocmoradery and he encouraged me to keep going.
I am so happy that I did. Panoramic breathtaking views of the lakes and mountains. I felt a wonderful sense of achievement and at 2,364ft I was now wishing I’d brought provisions. Alas now for the trip back down again. Really recommend this hike to others. Take water and sandwiches or a wrap as you’ll need it!

The walk was a great combination of climbs and breath taking views!
After every summit you are treated to a great view. Unfortunately when we got to the top the clouds had other ideas so we didn’t get the ultimate summit view but it was still worth the climb.
We did the circular walk which took you make round and across the moors!

Not the easiest of walks, to access the top of the hill, but the views you get, from the top, make the effort worthwhile.

Really enjoyable walk. Amazing views throughout with varying terrain and plenty of elevation.
We did the circular walk which takes in the old man of coniston and Dow Crag. Dow Crag path is a little less obvious in places put take your time and look arround and you will find it. Well worth it too as this then gives you views of the old man from the side and the decent back and path back are a nice gentle finish to the walk.
Allow a good 5 hours to allow time to stop and admire the views as they are amazing on a clear day. Very interesting to see the old mining buildings and cables as you ascend as well.
One thing to note is when going to Walna scar car park keep going tot he end of the road for the main car park as there is a small one you come to first in a field which charges more and means you have to hike up to the other to start the walk anyway. Signs are misleading (I believe on purpose) as it says Walna Scar on the car park but in small letters then says "road" as it is not Walna Scar car park. Very cheeky and caught a few people out when we were there which cost them time and a extra couple of £.

We parked in Coniston and took the main route up to the summit. Rewarded with some great views of Lake Coniston, Windermere and the coast line. We returned via Levers Water which was a slightly more difficult route down, but less busy and rewarded with a beautiful waterfall. This was my wife’s first attempt at climbing ‘The Old Man’. She found it hard work towards the end but completed the hike in about 4 hours. I’m so proud of her. Underfoot was a little difficult at times, but paths are ok in main if you have decent shoes. A good level of fitness is also required as the summit is 803 metres high. Brilliant day and well worth the effort.

Hello,
We went up today and it said the car park was closed, will it be open anytime soon ?
Or any nearby alternate car parks ? (Ideally without the big hill)

I also went there today and yes it is closed. I understand that it is being converted to a pay and display and have no idea when it will be open. I backtracked turned left into Coniston and turned left past the Bull, the road takes you past the brewery. I parked on the lane before the no parking signs and walked the lane in the direction of the YHA and Coppermines Valley. Veer off to the left for The 'Old Man'

Too far from Ambleside. Find a way to Langdale or Elterwater and do it from there. Walk covered in Wainwright Southern Fells book 4.

Hi the a539 is the quickest route I believe. You could also google the best way up or try the sat nav . Hope that helps or drive to the top car park

Hi Zwearman, the A593 is the most direct route to Coniston but I would not attempt a walk from Ambleside as it is a 4-hour walk each way from town to town. The road is very narrow in places and is really quite unsuitable for walking. I would catch the bus from Ambleside to Coniston then start your walk.

From Walna Scar car park and then using the direct route up via the disused mines route it took me a couple of hours going up and a little less coming back. There are many routes both up and down.

Is there any car parks or just park up at the side of the road?

My favourite route is to park at Torver. Road spaces and a church car park. This allows you to do a beautiful circular walk up to walna scar road then via brown pike, buck pike, Dow crag ( amazing ) Then across to the old man then return via goats water and old mines to Torver. Finish off with a well deserved beer and bar meal in one of the two pubs 😃Enjoy

Planning a family holiday the beginning of September, would this walk be doable with a 17 month old strapped to my back?

If you're reasonably fit and you have someone else to carry the rest of your gear and plenty of drinks. Pick a dry day as the slate up there can get quite slippery when wet. I know what it's like carrying the weight of a toddler on your back so to help your balance I'd suggest at least one walking pole for ascending and descending the steeper sections near the summit. Take care, take your time and take lots of photos. Enjoy.

Hello! We are planning 3 days of walking in the Lake District in mid-March. There are 2 adults in our 50s and 2 21year olds. We are all in decent shape and like hiking. We’re planning to walk up Coniston. Is March an ok time of year?

Hi there, yes as long as the weather is kind. Make an early start and make the most of the daylight hours though. Obviously you want to ensure you get back down in the light! It is stunning anytime of the year. enjoy!
