A magical lake that we circumnavigated using roads right next to it.
Had to drive through Coniston itself, full of tat shops.
From different places great views of peaceful boats and The Old Man.
The road on the east of the lake was virtually deserted so easy to park up a couple of times.

Although popular it is less frantic than other lakes. At times, it exudes peace and tranquillity. There’s plenty to see…and do and there is an excellent lakeside cafe aptly named the Bluebird.
Parking is available in the centre of the village - a pleasant walk from the lake or by the lake itself. Both are pay and display. It always makes me smile to hear people complaining about the price of car parking given the fantastic views across and on the lake and are more than willing to spend a small fortune on a pint of beer!
There are several options for sailing on the lake but the most iconic has got to be the steam gondola. It may not be the cheapest but, come on, make an occasion of the sail!
The village itself is dominated by the brooding mass of the Old Man of Coniston with its links to copper mining. If a lakeside walk, then there is good path to the left of the cafe which I follows the road around the head of the lake. It’s possible to walk to Brentwood along this path.
The views down the lake on a clear sunny day are superb.
Highly recommended to visit this lake.

Furious. Entered Con_ton and parked in the rip off car park clearly marked for the pier etc. Walked for half a mile through the village and past a tawdry tourist trap, to emerge at the lake........opposite another car park, charging the same as the one we parked in. I feel as if I've been mugged by SLDC. Never again.

Went for a walk with friends, the view was stunning & lots of beauty to be seen.
Lots of people where out, with family, dogs being walked & the lake was lovely.
We went for a swim in the lake & their was lots of people that where also doing the same. Best to go early if you want to do this as it gets busy.

Not easy to park, but this is another lovely lake to visit, there are lovely walks around the lake and surrounding areas including the old man of coniston. The town is attractive with lots of places to see and do. Including the Donald Cambell museum and steamship trips, gets very busy but worthwhile

Wonderful views even topped with clouds.
Lovely cruise with Nat and Save on Coniston Launch....plenty of stories of history of the Lake with humour.
Two hours at Ruskin's Brantwood House was plenty of time to see, read and experience the House, Garden and cafe.

Though Windermere and Ullswater get most of the Lake's waterway attention, Coniston is spacious and deep.
We parked off the road and hike or mile to a picnic spot.
Most visitors are in the water, enjoying the kayaking & canoeing. During summer months, a yacht tours the Coniston.
Informal picnic spots abound on both sides of the lake.
But folks are here for the water, gentle & cool for a swim.
Toddlers dip their plastic containers into the shoreline tide, gathering water, then pouring it out.

Absolutely amazing views of the Lake Coniston, lots to do, boat rides, paddle boarding, kayaks, feeding the ducks and swans, cafe near by,any places for picnics, an absolute gem 💎

Lovely lake. We did a boat trip which was great fun and there was a nice cafe, with cake. Lots of people having fun in the water - paddleboards, kayaks etc. As lakes go, this was a very nice one!

Beautiful place, we visit couple of times each august when we are there, got two labs and daughter and hubby hire pedal boards

I've seen caravans on the road to Consiton but have never towed one myself. The road is quite narrow in places so you have to watch out for locals who know the road driving v. quickly! Also the occasional bus or lorry. I recall there being quite a narrow bridge.
I don't recall the road being particularly hilly though but might be worth checking with the Lake District tourist office.
If you've not been to Consiton before, you're in for a treat!

Can anyone help please. Can you advise on shortest route from the coppice park to consisting?

The route to Coniston in the car is via the A593 directly, however not suitable to walk safely. the best route on foot would be via the gate at the bottom of Park Coppice on to Coniston Hall campsite and following the footpath to the Lake Road and then either walking to the village or to the lake. At most it would be a half hour walk - a lovely walk.
A robust 6 year old would be able to walk from Coniston to the Coppermines which is a lovely walk and a great achievement - walking up from The Black Bull Inn on the left side of the river and keep going!

Hi, we're planning a visit to Coniston on February 2018. We're afraid of heavy snow blocking the traffic. Is this area very snowy? The snow piles up often in the winter? We will use local taxi for transportation from Windermere train station.

all the times I've been to the lakes in the winter I've never had any real problems with the snow of which the majority is on the hill tops the vally floors are usually fine with care.

My husband died recently and was born and grew up in Ulverston, he asked that his ashes be sprinkled on coniston water. I am trying to find a secluded spot to do that. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

We went last year in June to the Lake district and around Coniston. We had a coffee at the Bluebird Cafe and there is a small pier there where small boats can moor. There are picnic tables around as well. It overlooks the lake and it's quite pretty. Maybe you could let go of your husband ashes there. It is an enjoyable place and kids usually are happy running around. It's a happy place. I think it should be alright to do that around this spot.
Very sorry for your loss and hope you can find the ideal spot for your hubby.

You can walk along a lot of the shore, or take a rowing boat out
Take the steamer journey to see all of Coniston Water before you decide
It's a beautiful place
