The lack of opulence here makes me fell very fulfilled. I find great comfort and peace every time I go. The tranquility fills me up - until I need a recharge - so I go back again. Years ago I was in desperate need of support. I found it here at St Oswald’s , of which I remain eternally grateful.
Any rate if the above seems a bit heavy, I was enjoying a cup of tea opposite the church, when my Daughter said to me “ Dad, are you going into the Church…? “”Too right” was my response, a split second later the church bell rang !

My wife and myself are currently holidaying in the Lake District staying at the excellent Crown Hotel in Wetheral (Review to follow) and earlier today we visited the lovely Church and gardens (including seeing William Wordsworth’s grave) of St Oswald’s Church in Grasmere.
It is a lovely Church and setting - helped by the fact it was such a beautiful late Summer/early Autumn day. Certainly would be a great pity to visit Grasmere and not spare 15 minutes seeing both the Church, Gardens and - of course - William Wordsworth’s final resting place!

St. Oswald's Church is located in Grasmere, a little town, where the poet Wordsworth has lived with his wife and children some years and it is located in Cumbria Region, in the North of England. It was built in the 14th Century, but it was after remodelled. Nowadays, it is known because it is related to the poet. In fact, inside you can buy some works of him. It has a big square bell tower and a main nave, where you can see an altar. In the surroundings, in the cemetery, the poet is buried and you can see the grave.

We visited the churchyard and graves of several members of the Wordsworth family at this church but did not visit inside the church. There is a daffodil garden adjacent to the church which we did not visit because we wanted to visit Dove Cottage during the short time we had there.

We always walk around the graveyard, to enjoy the peace and tranquility before moving on. We visited the grave of William Wordsworth and looked around the outside of the church. Always pleasant on a sunny day! And shouldn't be missed if you can help it.

Most people probably just come to visit Wordsworth's grave but the church itself is definitely worth a look. It is dedicated to St. Oswald, King of Northumbria who is believed to have preached on the site around 630AD. The present church was built about 1300AD. Inside is plain and simple, but very beautiful and peaceful, and the old wooden beams of the roof are amazing. The church also contains a number of memorials, including one to Wordsworth, and a more modern stained-glass window depicting St. Oswald.

Beautiful church inside and out, worth a walk round
The grounds are well kept and nice to sit and rest in with the Wordsworth family graves made nice for visitors to see

A lovely simple church and churchyard, the gravestones of the Wordsworth family were hard to read, would love to see the daffodil garden in flower.
