An oasis in the middle of a big busy city.
Lovely tearoom with sufficient parking.
Golf course.
Lot's of park benches to sit on.
Quiet & peaceful!

If I could ever afford to live in one place in London, it will have to be either Richmond, Putney or Wimbledon. Because together they form such a lovely triangle of nature, well being and urban quality life that no other area in London can match.

Take this common for example. Once you're off the road and in the woods, you'll be instantly disconnected from everything. In this vast area, there is wildlife, woodland, grassland, heathland, scrubland, horse riding, walking/running/bike trails, war memorial, ponds, golf course, museum, cafe and it's all surrounded by high end, posh, upscale residential areas.

You don't have to travel outside the city because you can have a proper forest experience right here. I don't remember how many times I got lost in the woods even though it was my regular walking route.

I can go on and on write a whole book but it's not possible to list all the qualities that make this little piece of heaven tick but in short, I love nature, peace and quiet and this place has it all.

It was a sunny, if chilly, autumn afternoon when I visited the Common for some exercise. You forget what a beautiful place this is, and one which changes with the seasons. On my occasional visits over the last few months I have watched the cygnets grow until they are now quite large.

It is a great place for ramblers, joggers, families with children and dog-walkers; but take some good shoes as, after recent rain, the paths can become muddy. It is particularly popular at the moment as people seek relaxation and exercise during lockdown.

The windmill is a great feature and at one time was the home of Robert Baden Powell, the father of the Scouting movement and was the imaginary home of the famous TV characters the Wombles, but has been closed all of this year due to the pandemic. Let's hope it can reopen next spring. The cafe is however open, for takeaway only, and is very popular.

If you plan to visit and have the option to go at quieter times during the week, then it is best to do so, especially if you are visiting by car - the car park can quickly fill up at busy times.

So lucky to have this wonderful Common on our doorstep. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to explore a beautiful natural habitat and the beautiful Autumnal colours.
The Windmill Cafe by the car park has outdoor seating and is great for coffee, tea and homemade cakes or something more substantial after a walk!

It had been quite a while since I had last seen a ‘certain mischievous’ pooch - so it was a genuine delight to be reunited with him, and take him for a walk over the Common, in the area nearest to the Golf Club.

Lovely half an hour stroll, followed by a (shared) cheese panini in the golf club, after. Very pleasant.

After leaving Central London, I was faced with two options - 1) Return home to the Esher area, and inevitably, have to listen to the neighbours’ kids bouncing their balls loudly on tarmac (not literally) for several hours ⚽️ OR 2) Come for a lengthy amble round these Commons. 🧑‍🦯

🅿️ Plenty of parking 🚗 available near KCS School 👩‍🎓), albeit, some pay and display - Ringo available. Do ensure you pay, otherwise the local council will inevitably, ticket you, and by Buddha, they ARE merciless! Sunday, one is safe. 🚔

Sadly, the area near the Pond - nearest to the Village, was busy, so I, naturally, opted to go elsewhere, so as to avoid people (not just for ‘social distancing’ reasons 😷), and, of course, any nefarious ‘Wombles’.

Good areas to investigate - Beverly Brook, Caesar’s Camp 🗡 area (which, historically, never was Caesar’s Camp), and the area around the Windmill.

The Mandarin Ducks are certainly worth a perusal, as you won’t see them in many places in the U.K., let alone Europe. 🐧🦆

If you traverse the area near the Golf Course ⛳️, then genuinely, please be careful of flying balls! The golfers can, also, be quite merciless 😣

I had forgetten what a beautiful natural asset we have a short distance away from where I live with Wimbledon Common, my choice for some exercise in this strange world.

The Commons were saved for the public to enjoy in 1871 and have the the Windmill at the centre in which Robert Baden-Powell wrote parts of Scouting for Boys, published in 1908. In happier times, the windmill is open at weekends and well worth a visit.

The windmill, cafe, small interpretative centre and toilets are, of course, closed at the moment, including the car park, which means that there were less people here than in the nearby Wimbledon Park, with a few golfers from the London & Scottish about to start a round of golf.

The Queensmere Pond is hidden away deep in the woods, with the ducks less approachable than in Wimbledon Park - possibly they don't have as many children feeding them with bread.

I enjoyed exploring paths and areas of the Commons that I had not been to before, and you realise just how beautful it is, a natural oasis away from the traffic of London.

Popped here for an hour as haven’t been here for 6 months, managed to park in the windmill car park, we had a great walk towards the pond and doing a circuit around the golf course it wasn’t busy at all.cafe was open but didn’t go in.

After being horrified to find, at a mechanics in Merton, that a dealer who had sold me my car back in August, had put the front wheels on backwards (highly dangerous, albeit it’s my middle name),
I decided to go for a stroll on the Common.

Pleasant weather, and the Sun was out - good walk to the Caesar’s Camp area, followed by, onwards, to the Windmill.

Nice relaxing finish in Wimbledon Common Golf Club bar - you don’t have to play or be a member there, to walk in.
