I would allow three hours for a visit.
There is so much information in this museum, it is a real achievement
It covers many of the areas that the Imperial War Museum does not, so the two museums work in tandem.
The National Amy Museum is very strong on the development of the army from the 17th century onwards.
It crucially uses historical context to explain how the army developed, why it developed, how it was used and structured.
It explains the turbulent 17th century very well, of how modern Britain was formed politically and socially.
There is a great exhibition on the way soldiers are recruited and trained, and the tests they have to do to pass basic training.
Also interesting is the look at daily life; of how rations have changed and barracks life.
Plus a section on leaving the army.
The museum then goes on to cover the change in weapons.
A lot is devoted to the different campaigns the army has fought.
In Europe - such as the The War of the Spanish Succession, The Seven Years War and the Napoleonic Wars etc.
In the World - the vast number of wars and action taken in all the continents, from the African colonial wars, to the similar in Asia, to the North American Wars of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Each section is accompanied by lots of uniforms, weapons, maps and a lot of paintings of battles.
The detail is great and some of the campaigns are lesser known.
There are also small sections on World War One and Two, though the Imperial War museum covers these in greater depth.
Whilst a lot of the museum is display cases of uniforms, weapons and kit, and information written on walls with illustrations, these work really well.
They are easy to read.
There are a few interactive ideas, such as learning to march with a video drill instructor, and large model of the Battle of Waterloo with different parts of the battle imposed on the model.
There is a well stocked shop, a fairly large cafe and clean toilets.
The guidebook is afffordable and well worth buying, it has lots of colour photos.
There are plans to enlarge the galleries, for this I would suggest covering a bit of medieval warfare and some more interactive sections.

Fascinating and informative museum, which is free, with helpful staff, and a nice cafe. I learned a lot about our history, the First and Second World Wars, and also was reminded of the major role the army plays when it is deployed in civil emergencies, for example, the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone, Covid, and searching for the dead after the tragic events in Aberfan. It made me think about the courage of soldiers in all sorts of situations, not only in combat.

Absolutely brilliant museum. An abundance of exhibits , going back hundreds of years nicely displayed with nuggets of history notes to inform you. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable and more than prepared to chat about the history and exhibits

It was a well-equipped museum with a high level of interactivity. There were plenty of areas that would capture the interest of even those not particularly interested in military matters. It was equally informative in terms of learning about the role the British Army has played throughout history. We believe it is well worth setting aside at least two hours for a visit.

Not very big, but interesting. You can see weapons from different periods, medals, uniforms and other military accessories. However, not as spectacular as I would have expected. There are not many fighting machines/tanks/planes or other massive exhibits.
You need 60-90 minutes to visit it.
Entrance is free.
The museum also has a cafe where you can also have lunch.

Great day out as a family. Imformative and lots to see and do. The cafe was expensive but varied choices available. Interactive for children to keep them interested. Would reccommend!

I came here with someone who is nearly 12, they loved it, and so did I, a shame the Soldier exhibition wasn't open.
We paid £6 for a Souvenir Guide book, and got to go into go into the Hidden Objects Exhibition, the young person I came with tried on some uniform and helmets. The 3 staff members in there (pictured), were friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable, as were the other staff in there.
This is definitely worth a visit for young and old. We were there for about 3.5 hours, but could've spent longer there.

Only wanted to see the army in Germany bit and it was very good. I considered all the other bits a bit old hat and could be construed as jingoistic. But, hey, who's armed forces museums aren't much the same in that regard. Very well presented exhibition, lots of detail about the start of things which must have been tricky for all concerned. Like no fraternising at all. Yeah, everyone ignored that! I particularly liked the later bits with the impact of the Berlin Wall. I could relate to this having seen East Berlin in 1987. And the details about the train journey into Berlin from the West. Boy, were the Commies ever paranoid? Also, things were explained why they didn't just go home straight away after the wall fell.

Very well laid out museum but with rather abrupt staff. Patrons should not be spoken down to as if they shouldn’t be there.

Would we be allowed to take photographs of the various memorabilia on display? I'm rather curious to know. Thanks ❤

You don't have to buy a ticket, period. There is no charge, however donations are encouraged. When we went to the National Army Museum we were coming from someplace else and walked there. When we returned to our hotel we took a cab to the underground and connected to our hotel. There is a very nice cafe on site with a good array of lunch options.

Hi. My boy is 5 and army mad, but gets very bored with text on walls, rather he would like to see exhibits, tanks, guns, bombs, that sort of thing. Is this a good place to travel an hour to?

Hi, I started taking my grandson at age 5, your boy sounds just like my grandson who never stops to read the signs! There’s a huge display of army vehicles in the grounds too and I’d say definitely worth an hour’s trip. We go every year. There’s a nice cafe and small play area upstairs. All in all plenty to look at.
