We would have given a 5⭐ rating for the well curated exhibitions, good artefacts on display, plenty of historic facts but also personal stories to discover, but ... read on and check why we found the museum "average" only!
Take the elevator and start on the 3rd floor. Highlight: "Sailortown", discovery walk back in time.
An absolute NO GO was the invasion of toddlers, infants, babies etc (who surely didn't check anything about the museum!), 2 large "buggy parkings" on the GF were full!? and also plenty of unattented, unmannered ... children (6-10 years old) were running around, screaming and shrieking, yelling! And of course ruining other peoples visit! Museum staff didn't care, as well as parents, happy to let loose their offspring.
Well our "experience" was happening on a Saturday morning in Oct. ... maybe if you can find a "normal, quiet slot time" it could be a great visit!? Otherwise you feel more like being in a baby nursery/child care center than in a museum 😱

We loved the guided tour with Andy.
It's kind of incredible how much history he took us through, covering slavery and strikes, bombing and rebuilding, all delivered in a charming and witty way.
Would 100% recommend the guided tour if you visit!

We enjoyed a brief 1.5 hour visit and plan to return in December to complete
the exhibits which take you from the 1930's to the present day.
It was free to enter, easy to walk around, well laid out and very clean and tidy.
They have free guided walks each day around 11am so check details on there website or better to ring them.
We believe this is generally run by volunteers who were all extremely friendly , informative and Helpful.
WELL DONE, GOOD VISIT.

Great displays on the top floor that give a very interesting history of the London Docks and the River Thames. Almost had a backache just imagining how hard dock-workers must have worked.
Overall, the museum has a nice ambience, but it’s really geared more towards toddlers. The museum even provides a stroller “parking lot” on the ground floor. “Reflective silence” is frequently interrupted by the squeal of excited toddlers.
Staff were very nice.
Museum is just a few steps away from West India Quay in the Canary Wharf area.

The Docklands Museum has unfortunately missed the mark in several critical areas, leaving much to be desired in both its content and presentation. The museum's treatment of the history of the dock workers and the local community feels perfunctory at best, with little attention given to the working-class history that is so integral to the area. This lack of focus on the everyday lives of the people who lived and worked in the Docklands is a glaring omission, and it seems that more care was given to curating the history of the transatlantic slave trade. While there are some personal stories included in this section, the narrative is disappointingly one-sided. It neglects to acknowledge the broader historical context, such as the fact that British people were also being taken as slaves during the same period.
The museum's attempt at recreating historic streets and shops is lackluster, reminiscent of the poor-quality exhibits from the 1980s. The interactive elements, which could have provided a more engaging experience, are sparse and unimpressive. The few interaction sites available, like the toy wooden oven, tool bench, or tea and sandwiches sets for children, feel like afterthoughts. Many of these pieces are either dirty, broken, or missing altogether, showcasing a clear lack of care and maintenance. Instead of creating exhibits that children can truly engage with, such as a functional forge or hands-on workshop, these token interactions come off as an attempt to appear clever without substance.
Adding to the confusion is the bizarre inclusion of a Caribbean story time event complete with Caribbean food. While cultural events are certainly valuable, this one felt entirely out of context in a museum dedicated to the Docklands. It further detracts from any coherent narrative the museum might have been trying to establish.
One of the more advertised features, the 'Mudlarks' exhibit, is another point of frustration. Despite being prominently featured on social media, it turns out this area requires a separate £3 entry fee for adults and children, with advance booking necessary—a detail that isn't clearly communicated. To make matters worse, the experience is marred by the presence of an exceptionally rude staff member ( either American or Canadian), whose strict enforcement of rules lacked any semblance of customer service skills.
Overall, the Docklands Museum feels like a place that is desperately in need of new direction and a complete overhaul in how it approaches its exhibits and visitor engagement. The experience was disappointing and disjointed, leaving us with no desire to return. We would strongly advise against visiting until significant improvements are made.

What a fantastic museum, really atmospheric, informative and fun. So much historical information going right through to modern day. So important to include the section on slavery which was really thoughtfully done.

We attended a session in the mudlarks section of the museum with my 2year old. The session was 40-50 mins long which was plenty of time to try everything but it went really quickly. My son prinarily loved the water table section, and a change of clothes and socks was 100% necessary. He also went in the soft play and only needed an initial boost up before going around the rest.
We parked by the cinema opposite which was very convenient but expensive. If we didn't have a large pram, the dlr would have been better.
We did not go round the rest of the museum (which is free), but would recommend the bit we went in and be keen to return to explore the rest of the museum.

If you're in London and want to avoid the usual tourist traps (we're looking at you, Big Ben!), then the **Museum of London Docklands** is your golden ticket. That's right, it's free! And we all know free is the magic word when you're on vacation.
Picture this: a deep dive into Victorian London’s docks without having actually to do any manual labor. The museum gives you a glimpse into a time when people were really, REALLY excited about tea and sugar—well, at least until they found out about the whole slavery bit. Kudos to the museum for not sweeping that uncomfortable truth under the proverbial rug.
Oh, and did I mention the personal explanations from the museum staff? It’s like having your very own historical Google, but with less judgment. Trust me, the enthusiastic explanations alone are worth the visit.
So, if you’re keen on experiencing Victorian London without contracting cholera, make this a must-see. The **Museum of London Docklands** is the perfect blend of education and entertainment, and did I mention it’s FREE? Yeah, I thought that might catch your attention.
Get ready to travel back in time, minus the terrible 19th-century hygiene.

Went there mainly as an alternative for the closed museum of London, but far exceeded the expectations. A lot of thought and work went into the museum, all the more impressive as it is free/donation. Staff were very friendly, it wasn’t overcrowded, and the contents were diverse and thought-provoking. It shows racists should tone down through important lessons in history and humanity.

West India Quay is about a two minute walk as long as you ignore the signs and just walk along with the dock on your left. Museum is on right past a few restaurants. We found street sign sent you round the houses

Hi,
Does the museum sell old maps of London? Specifically looking for Rotherhithe
Thanks

Not as far as I am aware. Best place to look is online. Southwark Council has just published a range of maps of the area on their website free to view and download. The Nationall Archives online bookshop has a wide range. A lot depends on what date you are looking for.

Hi, we recommend at least 2-3 hours for your first visit, but be prepared to lose complete track of time in our fantastic Grade 1 listed Georgian warehouse!
We have a café on the ground floor as well as our Rum & Sugar restaurant offering great food and atmosphere.
Please see out website for information on our free, daily gallery tours and short talks on a range of fascinating topics.
