I came with my sister. We had a lovely few hours. The house is interesting with its mishmash of different eras. The gardens are stunning over different levels.
The cafe for lunch was great, a good use for one of the greenhouses, with yummy jacket potatoes.
The staff were enthusiastic and helpful.

Splendid. Only discovered Eltham Palace in talking to some friends and by coincidence had only just joined English Heritage so free to get in with the grandchildren!
On a couple of visits they had a guy teaching the children sword fighting. He had such good rapport with the children and they had great fun. Glorious grounds to picnic in. The interior of the palace is so interesting and had me spellbound. How have I missed the place for so long.
Some ‘dressing up’ opportunities for adults and children was another bonus.
Lovely cafe and a small adventure playground for the children.
We will be back for more visits.

We loved Jeffery and Martin, very engaging and funny all day with the activities and the shows. Had a lot of historical facts which made this experience very interesting and useful. Learnt a lot more with the tudor era.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your FIVE STAR review of our final week of the children's Medieval Season. It's proved really popular, running throughout the school holidays and a great reason to join English Heritage as a member as you can bring up to 6 under 18's with you free of charge.

A really enjoyable visit, for me the Medieval Hall and Garden, for my Wife the Art Deco side of things, we spent 3.5hrs looking around making use of the free audio guide after having a cuppa and pastry in the Greenhouse Cafe on arrival. Non English Heritage members pay a modest £3.00 car park fee.
We decided not to stay for lunch although a tempting and varied variety of food is offered and affordable prices.
Although visiting as a couple it was great to see they cater for Children and indeed their was a small event taking place in the garden.
A worth while visit, the more you look the more you see as you tour the house.

Way more than I was expecting ...
I only really visited to see the circular art deco entrance hallway, but the rest of the house was fascinating too. Some of the decadent touches are beyond words.
Keep a look out for all the ways their pet lemur was incorporated into the house!
The Great Hall is imposing yet I loved seeing old photos of the family using it as a living room. As you can see, I got fully involved with the options of dressing up too.
Gardens and water features are pretty and very pleasant to sit and walk about in. Definitely my favourite EH visit of 2024 so far.

Thank you for such a marvelous FIVE STAR review of your visit to your favourite English Heritage property. We have stiff competition from Stonehenge, Dover Castle and Down House, the home of Charles Darwin which isn't too far away so it's great to hear.

Incredibly beautiful place! The staff are very friendly, welcoming and helpful, you can take as many pics as you like, it is incredibly well preserved and there's lots to learn, i didn't expect much but it blew me away, but then again, I love history, medieval stuff and art deco and this place has it all! I was in awe at the end of my visit, would highly recommend

A quiet, charming and pretty place. The interior is surprising and you really feel the lives of the people who lived there. No barrier to prevent us from entering the various rooms. You can even visit the basement! The park is beautiful and you can eat on the terrace or under a nice glass roof with more than decent Awards.

Our first visit to Eltham Palace. We decided to visit, having seen the venue on BBC’s Railway Journeys, with Michael Portillo.
The volunteer staff in the house were most helpful and informative. Handset guides are available but we chose to browse the literature around the house. On hindsight I wish I had picked up a handset.
We loved the house, so full of history. It was as if the Courtaulds had merely gone out, giving us a cheeky glimpse of their house.
We liked the large Hall, where we sat down for ten minutes, taking in the atmosphere.
Loved looking around the gardens, where seating was available. We enjoyed watching the carp, who didn’t seem to mind us and the heron who was indifferent to our presence.
At times, you get a reminder of London by viewing the London Skyline, at a distance. Don’t forget your binoculars.
We had a cream tea, but had a twenty minute wait, due to the demand….worth waiting for, though.

Thank you Derek for your FIVE STAR review of your visit. Michael Portillo was an absolute gentleman during the filming and loved it here. Many people don't realise what an incredible view looking west towards the City of London, just 8 miles away.

We're family English Heritage members and often come here with our son. This time we brought our in-laws because Eltham Palace itself is beautiful. However, I have to say I experienced absolutely diabolical customer service at the paying desk. After going to cashier to purchase tickets for our in-laws (2 people) and also scanning ourselves in a relatively new person on the till took his time to get it right which was fine and he did and charged us £39 for two adults. However, a rude female young colleague who decided to overlook the transaction came to the conclusion he still needed to charge us more even though I had a family pass. She did this a few times and had to correct but she still could not do the maths in her head. A family plus two adults is a charge for ONLY two adults. I then had to clarify the math and she still refused to understand or even apologise for the inconvenience and embarrassment to her colleague and us. She needs retraining and I will be making an official complaint as this was out of order. The staff also need to calm down on their policing as it is a bit OTT and over bearing. Apart from this terrible start to our visit, we were able to make the most of it. The internal staff from the cafe to the house are definitely second to none.

Eltham Palace is easily accessible by public transport. The complex combines medieval architecture with the Art Deco influences that millionaire couple Stephen and Virginia Courtauld brought to the home and garden in the 1930s.
The new audio guide system is not yet installed. A short film takes over the introduction. The basement is also temporarily closed due to water damage. There is a varied program around the history of the house for large and small visitors, and two PopUp stores. On this day, the motto is "Kids Rule!". On the meadow behind the house, medieval-dressed people entertain the families. More information about the program can be found on the website.
After the sightseeing it is worth an extended walk through the park. Numerous benches invite you to discover the different visual axes. The nearby cafe is very poorly organized on this summery June-Sunday. There's no more beer at 1:30.

Hello, I plan to visit in mid-April. I understand I can walk to the palace from Eltham rail station. Could you please tell me if there are sidewalks all along that route? (the distance is not a problem for me, I just don't like walking on busy roadways)

Sorry I'm late back here - there is disabled parking. I would say that although you could access part of the gardens with a wheelchair, it's not easy & wouldn't be very comfy for the wheelchair user (or yourself if pushing)

We didn't pay for parking and there are lockers in the entrance to the palace house, again you don't need to pay, you can store you bits and pieces whilst you go round the house and gardens, but need to pick up as you walk back to the cafe and shop.

About 25% of English Heritage members are also members of the National Trust and they complement each other very well. The National Trust look after a number of high profile country houses and swathes of the English landscape whilst English Heritage care for a diverse range of sites including castles, ancient monuments, country houses and industrial buildings including Stonehenge, Dover Castle and Osborne House, the favourite residence of Queen Victoria.
