This is located on Picadilly and it is an old book store. It has been around since 1797 and has the distinction of being the appointed bookstore of the Queen. There are at least 4 floors to the store and it is loaded with books. worth the stop just to browse.

A pochi passi da Piccadilly Circus, entriamo in questa antica e bellissima libreria. Basta una prima occhiata per capire che è una libreria speciale, che merita una visita e almeno un acquisto. Notevole.

Wonderful bookshop, full of character and history. Feels like a portal to another world. It might be the oldest bookshop in London but this doesn't stop it from having a chic, contemporary vibe that feels very inviting.

I cannot vouch for the actual bookshop but their communications are not great. I'll bet they would have taken my call if it had come from a certain palace not to far away.
I emailed them and heard nothing back so tried calling and no sooner had the phone rung than I was cut off. I waited an hour and tried again and it rang and range. I shall give them the benefit of the doubt that they are very busy. All I wanted to know was how to buy gift vouchers and suggest they also need to make that clearer on their website.
I went to another bookshop instead.

I love book shops and try to visit one whenever I am out and about in a city. Having read about this one in Lonely Planet some time ago we made a detour on our journey back to our hotel to pay a visit.
On entry you are immediately enveloped into this book emporium established back in 1797. Everything is clearly marked so it is fairly easy to find your way around.
In addition to those on display which include signed copies of recent releases any book in print can be ordered and fine copies or out-of-print books sourced by a dedicated team.
I approached a member of staff, Ned, regarding a first edition. He was very helpful and friendly and hopefully they will be able to locate what I'm looking for having taken my details

I was in London. While having a coffee I had an irresistible impulse to relive the experience of my student days and buy a book from a bricks and mortar bookshop. I checked availability online and reserved it.
Moral me, I thought! Altruistically abandoning Amazon for a put upon posh shop on a posh London street. I walked past the grocer on the corner, Fortnum & Mason. Patting myself on the back all the way there I was slammed in the face by shoddy sneering staff with sticks up their backside.
At least with Amazon they might send you a used product instead of a new one (a steam iron arriving with water in it) or a questionable Chinese counterfeit, but at least you are left with the impression they were delighted to provide you with a service.
Here at Hatchards, it was a palaver to pick up your reserved item, a failed credit card transaction was met with the implication there was a problem with impecuniosity, and the 10p bag charge didn't extend to a robust rope handled creation to impress your fellow commuters with your impeccable pedigree indicated by your choice of bookshop. No, what I got - on account of possibly my sweaty countenance, colour, ethnicity, class or accent - was a feeble paper bag barely larger than the book and too delicate to carry a bookmark.
I'll continue to avoid Amazon where possible, but when I do buy from them it will with a sense of satisfaction that the out-of-touch and out-of-order patrician values and practices are being filtered off our streets.

Situata nella zona di Piccadilly Circus, questa libreria è aperta dal lunedì al sabato dalle 9:30 alle 20:00 mentre la domenica dalle 12:00 alle 18:30. È la libreria inglese più antica di Londra, presente dal 1797. Costruita in legno e suddivisa in molti piani a seconda delle sezioni dei libri. Libri riguardo l’arte, romanzi, cinematografica e fotografia. È molto grande, accogliente, calda e silenziosa. Personale molto gentile e disponibile.
Anche se non siete appassionati di libri è una tappa obbligatoria, entrare in un’altra dimensione.

Per me una delle tappe obbligate ad ogni andata a Londra. Trovo che per libri d'arte e di cinema sia una delle più fornite in assoluto. Esiste dal 1797 ed è la più antica del Regno Unito. Libreria scricchiolante quasi d'altri tempi. Una visita è obbligatoria.
