The Hill Garden & Pergola is probably an open secret to those who know the surrounding Hampstead Heath well & I have been coming here since the 1960s ( they only became accessible to the public in 1960 ).
The Pergola itself is about 700 or 800 metres long , constructed primarily of stone pillars in the classical style topped with wooden cross members ; pavements & walls are of brick & stone. Depending on how you approach the pergola , it either leads to the adjoining Hill Garden or vice versa.
Next to the pergola you will see the splendid Inverforth House. This was the home of Lord Leverhume , the soap magnate & the precursor of the now Unilever giant.
He created the pergola & Hill Garden. Now Inverforth House has been converted into luxury apartments , having once been an orthopaedic hospital. The gardens surrounding Inverforth House remain private but you can view them at various stages along the pergola which snakes along on different trajectories & levels affording both views to the Heath & the house. Finally you drop down one of two stone staircases to the Hill Garden with its formal rectangular water feature & trees & shrubberies.
There are 2 ways to enter the pergola , both from the Heath or there is an entrance to the Hill Garden from a walk that leads from the main Golders Green to Hampstead Rd. If you are visiting from Hampstead either take a stiffish uphill walk to Whitestone Pond , carry on past Jack Straws Castle & look out for a stony , downhill track on your left that you will easily see just before you get to the wall surrounding Inverforth House. Go down here & look out for a small gate on the right which let's you in to the pergola via stairs. You can also get the 268 or 210 bus up from Golders Green Station or Hampstead & get out at the Inverforth House stop.
Its free to get in but be aware it does not open until 8 : 30 am & closes at dusk.
Also it is only a few minutes walk from Golders Hill Park.
The pergola is home to many climbing plants , all looking to be suffering somewhat in the present drought. There is some much needed repairs required , particular for the decaying wooden stretchers & the water feature is scummy & in need of a complete clean out & re plant.
Having said that , this is a charming & atmospheric spot & well worth a visit.

The Hill Garden and Pergola is probably the most interesting part of Hampstead Heath to visit, if you are heading to that vast expanse of woodland for a bit of an exploration. It’s located on the far western side of the heath, to the west of North End Way. If you travel north past Jack Straw’s Castle, you can walk down Inverforth Close and you’ll see the path to the pergola and garden to the left.

The main feature of the garden is the pergola, and it is certainly a curious thing to see, seemingly just plonked there in the middle of the heath, giving the feel that it is a bit of a frivolous folly. And in many respects it is. It’s essentially a raised walkway, with a timber frame sitting atop a plethora of Doric columns which all sit on an arched brick base. It has the feel of a frivolous construct by someone with far too much money. And indeed it was. It was commissioned by Lord Leverhulme, who made his fortune selling soap. He decided that his nearby mansion needed an extravagant terrace, to host garden parties and lazy summer nights. It linked the formal gardens of the main house (now demolished) and the more gentle lawns of the lower garden. It was completed in 1906, though it was extended in 1911 and again in 1925.

It has the feel of mellow classicism, though it’s a bit run down these days. Though still curiously attractive, the pergola suffered in the aftermath of Leverhulme’s death and the onset of World War 2. By the time the City of London took it over in 1989, the place was almost falling apart. Resurrection is still underway, but in the faded glory of the pillars and arches, you’ll find a serenely interesting spot which exemplifies the Italianate phase which was alive and well between 1010 and 1925.

Visiting it in winter as I did is probably not the best time to see the pergola and surrounding at its most beautiful; the garden itself was particularly dreary and devoid of colour and glamour. Visit in spring or summer when the gnarled old wisteria is in full bloom, and the plethora of flowering shrubs and exotic bedding plants are at their height of floral grandeur. However, seeing the pergola in its bare bones really highlighted its faded grandeur, and the dramatics of the construction. It was really quite desolate, quite moody, and almost a bit eerie. You can picture the opulence it once had, and how that grandeur has faded away.

To me it’s the most interesting feature in the wide and relatively dull expanse of Hampstead Heath, and it’s worth seeking out this particular spot for a visit. I talked there from Hampstead underground station, about a 20minute brisk walk (steep in parts). I didn't find the stairs up into the pergola particularly easy to find, so you may have to walk around a bit.

Lord Leverhulme was paid by the wagon to take spoil away from the Hampstead extension to the Underground’s Northern Line - which he used to landscape these hill gardens! How astute can you get eh?! That’s how you get rich & stay rich! The pergola is a beautiful (and relatively modern) ruin, many romantics know this so in peak season it’s crawling with loved up people taking pics! Still, despite its popularity it remains a nice spot.

High expectations, not met. It's ok, but hardly a go-to venue. While the formal garden is ok, and pergola is...well, a pergola, there is little to admire or amaze. Shame really, since it's a slog to get here.

What a beautiful place! The architecture and garden are just beautiful, there is many flowers in full bloom, several varieties of roses, all well kept and arranged very nicely. A couple of benches offer an excellent spot for a break after walking around. I'm suprised this place is free and not crowded - a real hidden gem!

Even though we live in North London and have visited Golders Hill
Ark for years, it was only a chance sight of the signpost that caused us to investigate. We can’t believe we had never seen this amazing walkway before. Built by Lord Leverhulme in 1906 as an extension to his nearby house, it was built using the spoil form the N. line tube extension. Even on a winter’s afternoon there was lots to see and places to sit in the shelter. It seemed to be popular for photo opps too.

The hidden gem is not far from Hampstead and is part of Hampstead hill park, the entry is free and dogs are allowed
I may say the water in the middle was very dirty
And the forest around need a bit more attention
