Medieval gun tower which used to form part of Norwich's defenses. The tower is quite complete although you can only look in it. Taken as part of the riverside stroll, it's very attrative

Taken in as part of our riverside stroll, Cow Tower is an important part of the city’s history.
One of the earliest purpose-built artillery blockhouses in England, Cow Tower was built in 1398–9 to control a strategic point in Norwich's city defences. The unusual name is probably derived from the surrounding meadow at the time, which was known as Cowholme.
The tower was built as an addition to the defences already encircling medieval Norwich and was intended to house guns and a garrison of gunners to defend the approach to the city across the River Wensum. Its height of over 15 metres was necessary to overlook the high ground on the opposite bank.

Amazing to think this tower has stood the test of time. A medieval tower that stands tall and proud by River Wensum as a kind of watchtower. Great pic if taken in the late afternoon.

While walking along the river I decided to come and see this tower. It's in good condition but does have a crack down one side. But for it's age it has been kept well. I'm not sure if they do open days to go in but it was locked when I made my visit.Not that you need to go in as you can see the inside from the gated door(As you can see by the pictures). Worth the visit as the walk along the river is lovely.

The Cow Tower in Norwich is a nicely preserved old medieval tower - shame you can't go inside.
Next to the river in the old part of the city.

We visited this tower while walking around the river, the gates were locked probably due to safety reasons. To read the history of the tower and that it was build in 1398 was amazing and great to see such an ancient building.

Para quem está caminhando as margens do Rio é até interessante de ver essa construção que remonta a história local, mas nada além disso.
Seus arredores no entanto valem muito a pena, é agradável é belíssima local todo o jardim que margeia o Rio.

Lots of historical sites alongside the river in Norwich. The Cow Tower is one of them. Slightly falling appart and you can’t enter the building, but looks great next to the park and river.

I'm glad we didn't make a special trip to see this but as we passed it whilst generally walking we took a look. There's an information board for people that are into their history and I'm glad we saw it.

It's just a tower. Nothing inside but pretty river and flowers outside. Not worth making the effort to go especially to see this really but there's plenty of interesting things nearby and a great little pub, the Adam & Eve, which is the oldest ale house in Norwich I think. Lovely area, boring tower.
