What an absolutely amazing experience. We are English heritage members so thought we would put that to use whilst visiting York. This place is such a change to the normal castles. Very well preserved. Loads of information and the lad who showed us around was brilliant. He came across really nervous, however big respect to him as I couldn't retain all the information and the tell the story to a bunch of strangers. Well worth a visit.

A real piece of history, this former bunker has been preserved to tell the cold war story. The tour is about an hour, our guide (Jake) not only informative but very funny. Hard to imagine that nuclear defence was monitored in this unassuming part of York. Well worth the trip out - easily accessible from York centre.

Really enjoyed this visit. Well done to English Heritage for grabbing this different slice of history to preserve. Shout out to our tour guide Jake who clearly has a passion for the subject and really made the visit.

Wow thank goodness that this Bunker was never actually put to the test it was in use from 1961 till 1991.

There were mainly woman volunteers when needed, they would enter the Bunker for 30 days with no outside contact.

In one room was Awdry a computer that could detect a nuclear blast, but unfortunately could not tell the difference between lightning, fireworks or nuclear flash so every November 5th she would detect fireworks in a large radius.

Someone had to go outside every few hours to change paper in a machine on the roof and then would need to be decomtaminated, which was basically a hand held shower, and the clothes had to be put into a hot box and sealed up.

We booked online via English heritage and it was a really fascinating tour. It is in a residential area with parking more or less outside

Fascinating place to see, reminiscent of a WW2 film plotting aircraft movements, but this is done on a clear screen to check the strength and fallout from a nuclear bomb.
Conditions were very basic for the operatives- after seeing how they would have to cope I’d take my chances above ground!
Older kids will laugh at the early computers and older adults will be taken back to their childhoods complete with that sixties smell!
The whole visit lasts roughly an hour and the guides were excellent, very informative and amusing, really worth visiting if you are near York
We went midweek and had no problems parking, but lots of free on street parking e few minutes away

Credit to English Heritage for buying this facility, restoring and saved for the next generations. It is absolutely unique for UK, even if it is not very deep and spacious structure, as it was purposed for the use of professional personnel rather than for sheltering people of York.
However the greatest credit is for the guys showing around the facility. They not only explain all preserved artefacts and equipment from the Cold War period, but also provide a lot of interesting facts about the people who served there when the bunker was in use.
Absolutely amazing and also eye-opening (what could happen) visit.

This museum is a part of English Heritage. We parked on Acomb road and walked (2 mins). The place was easy to find. We walked in, sat and watched video (11 minutes) about Cold war and then had a tour around. It was very interesting, tour was aimed more for adults and older children but not very long so younger kids could survive as well.

It was a very interesting tour into the Cold war bunker! Recomend it😊 The guide had a lot of knowledge and told the history of this bunker and the other bunkers it was connected to. The guide gave a good overwiew of the context and why they built this bunkers during The cold war. This guided tour was given with humor and respect for the people and the topic, and gave us a lot of insight in the history. Remember to pre-book tickets!

I find things like this grimly fascinating so when I happened to see that York had a nuclear bunker open to the public during a recent visit, I booked tickets for myself and my partner.
The bunker has been superbly restored although it now sits rather incongruously in the middle of a modern housing development.
Our young guide was very knowledgable although I did feel the amount of humour he tried to inject grated a bit, it’s a sombre place and it seemed a bit overly flippant at times, but maybe that’s just me.
The short Cold War history movie that is played before the tour starts is quite graphic so think twice before taking younger children along.
I loved it, my partner hated it, she found it utterly depressing and couldn’t wait to get out, which I suppose goes a long way to show how effective the experience was.
If this is your kind of thing you won’t be disappointed.

Very sobering experience and a very good insight into how serious and grim the threat was and may still be. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and explained everything in great detail as to how the facility functioned and was planned to function if it had been used in a real life scenario. Well worth a visit. The gift shop needs a creative touch and maybe a future tie- in with the local pub/cafe may help the facility as the site wouldn't sustain these facilities on its own. I'd urge the pub and cafe to look into this as the guys at the bunker do push your Business's. It's incredible this site has actually survived given its back-story. Great work in saving an important piece of modern history 👍
