Most of the facts given to us by the guide were reasonably accurate, as I took it the tour guide had read the history books and standard operating procedures. However, a few inaccuracies need to be looked at. I agree that the building and all stuff in bunker need to be looked after but , and I have read in other comments , a bit much. We got basically a 5 minute introduction and most were do not touch this that and the next thing. I cannot understand why no videos are allowed. I also have never been on a tour where the guides have demanded you do not take pictures. All guides are usually wanting you to take pictures of them. Again I have seen comments about tours being just an hour. It is not enough as we cannot ask questions or being a long standing member of Royal Observer Corps discuss where the English Heritage Guides could get better information. I felt guide was more a robot and couldn't keep his eyes off the clock. As I do not live in the area I wont be back for a long time but still would recommend a visit.

I visited the bunker having booked a time online on the English Heritage website. As suggested on the booking information I parked on Acomb Road, a short walk away. Tours are of one hour duration and start promptly on the hour. Don't arrive too early as you have to wait on the street outside the bunker to be called in. There are no 'facilities' available until after you have received the safety brief.

Our young guide was enthusiastic but was clearly working to a prepared script. It was a little theatrical but informative nevertheless. The preliminary 10 film on The Cold War was informative and factual. Overall, in the hour available you can only gain a brief incite into what it would have been like to work in the bunker.

As an English Heritage member entry was free. Had I been paying the full rate I may have felt slightly short changed.

About a 10 minute walk along Acomb road there is a parade of shops with several cafes and coffee bars so although not on site refreshment is available close by.

Wonderful visit to this Cold War nuclear bunker. Really informative and engaging 1 hr tour. The bunker is as it would have been when operational, so many fascinating details and heritage. Incredible insight into both this period of history as well as bunker itself. Easy (and free) to park during your tour, regular buses or an easy short walk from the centre of York. Not to be missed!!

Decided to re-visit this historic site as the last time we'd taken our children. We were met by friendly staff who directed us to the start of our one hour tour. Ethan (our tour guide) was extremely knowledgeable about the site and informed of interesting facts that we hadn't picked up on our previous tour. It was nice to have a guide who was not only knowledgeable, but also had a sense of humour - this made our tour. Would recommend a visit whilst visiting the city.

Something I didn’t expect to see on my trip to York but was a great experience. Site is very well maintained and the tour guide (he told me his name but I can’t remember sorry!) was very knowledgeable and clearly was very into the subject matter in general.

My only gripe is that I would have liked more time to look around the bunker, take some more photos and read their information boards. Once the tour ended we pretty much had to leave straight away for the next group. Maybe this is to prevent people walking around on their own and touching the unique items that they shouldn’t touch I don’t know, but it would have been nice to have had a bit longer to take the site in.

This was a fascinating piece of Cold War history. Our guide was engaging and informative and we really got a sense of what it would have been like before the bunker was decommissioned. Well worth a visit if you're in the area.

We live in York and honestly I did not expect much excitement before the visit. We are English Heritage members and did not have to pay so decided to check it out. We almost forced eye-rolling 14- and 11-year old to go...
That we ALL LOVED it is a huge understatement. Jake, our guide, was a superb storyteller, showcasing his passion, extensive knowledge and genuine respect for the volunteers working at the bunker. His stories were witty and humorous to lighten the overall sombre mood of the place. They were delivered in a beautiful, sophisticated but clear English (and English is not my first language.) Jake's presentation skills were outstanding especially that he was explained a lot of science involved in the machines and meters on site. I would definitely recommend to families with teenagers. I can't imagine a humbling history lesson more expertly delivered. Thank you Jake and the English Heritage Team.

We all enjoyed the tour. It was very informative. The time spent there went really quick, as there was lots to take in. We would recommend the trip to others.

Just completed the tour with Jake. A very sombering experience but thankfully some added humour thanks to Jake. Phenomenal history of the bunker given through the tour. I’m sure the volunteers of the ROC would be thankful to Jake and all at English Heritage for telling their stories. Would be lovely to think their commitment could be recognised in future by the military and our governments.

Jake thank you for a wonderful tour!
