Made a diversion on the way home to visit is dam which I had wanted to see for a number of years. The dam was used in WW2 for bombing practice to destroy a similar dam in Germany. Well, it was well worth the wait stunning views of the dam and surrounding area from the right vantage point.
Had a lovely pasty and a hot chocolate at the visitor centre and went on my mini adventure which took an hour or so.
The visitor has paid parking free assess to toilets and a nice little cafe with out door seating only..
had a great time cant fault it..

Being photographers, we have long adored the photos of the Victorian style Dams and Derwent Dam has been our first opportunity to see such a marvel. It lived up to our expectations and it was a pleasantly short walk to see it - with much longer walks available afterwards.

We had a lovely walk round, weather was great so it made it even better. Long walk we didn’t realise how long it was to walk round, but we still enjoyed it. Would recommend this as a place to go.
We did come early on so when we got back to the car the car park was full and queuing to get in, make sure you park straight too if not people will block you in, I had to climb into my seat as I couldn’t open my door.
If you need the toilet make sure to go before and before queues start.

We were on holiday in the Peak District and this was our main thing to see as there is so much history attributed to the reservoir and dam.
We walked all around the reservoir which took about four hours. The walk was relatively easy with no huge hills to walk and proper paved paths to follow.
After the walk we stopped at the little cafe for hot chocolate to warm up!
Great photo opportunities as well as information boards to tell you the history.
A very enjoyable day and comes well recommended.

The walk around the dam is 4 hours to walk it. I walked it all with no stops from the cafe round & back to the cafe, my feet were sore after because I didn't wear the most comfortable shoes. There is inclines and declines & if it has been raining you will get wet/muddy shoes. I haven't cycled here but can imagine it is a lot of fun, the paths are excellent to cycle on & you can hire bikes in the summer season from the Cafe. It was very peaceful midweek to walk around & beautiful. There is a toilet at the cafe with refreshments.

The walk from the car park at Fairholmes to visit the dam and reservoir is easy and mostly flat. The dam has some information boards explaining the history of the site including its link to the Dambusters. The reservoir was very low when we visited but the views across the water were still good.

An iconic structure with a rich history, not least the story of the Dambusters. The scenery is magnificent. Good snacks available at the car park cafe. Plenty of paid and free car parking. You feel you are in another world when walking in the quiet woods

Cycled the 3 reservoirs trail, starting & finishing at Fairholmes car park. Rode clockwise round the Derwent, Howden & Ladybower reservoirs ending back at Fairholmes for a total distance of 15.5 miles.
Track varies; you are on tarmacked road up to the ‘King’s Tree’, then on gravel up to the old Derwent pack horse bridge at Slippery Stones, then there is the roughest section on the turn south back down to Howden Dam. For this section alone, this route is probably best done on an MTB bike with wide off road tyres. I managed it on a hybrid with road tyres but don’t do this unless you are an experienced rider.
The track improves again after Derwent Dam & is road again through the higher parts of the drowned Derwent Village that still remain (Derwent Lane) then it changes to a easily rideable compact gravel/hard surface once again down to Ashopton Viaduct (A57). You ride across this on a very wide pavement, then turn right & follow the road back up to Fairholmes.
Decent ride when you get the views of the reservoirs & the dams from between the trees. The ride does involve some ups & downs though there is the option to cut the ride short, cutting across the south of the Derwent Dam from Millbrook if you don’t want to cycle around the northern section of the Ladybower reservoir ;)

Is the walk around the dam push chair friendly? Also how many miles is the full circular path?
Thank you

I seem to remember a number of paths, not all will be pushchair friendly but there is a road that you can use as well. I did not do the whole walk but I think the website will give you the information

Usually the water flows over the top of the dam to a moat at the bottom and this runs off at one end as a river.
When we were there in February there was no water coming over the top of the dam but the water was still running from the moat to form the river. This was a lot of water and I wondered if anyone knew how the moat was fed with water to keep the river flowing?

Hi
It's pay and display, I can't remember how much though. We were there a fair part of the day, as we walked all around the reservoir.

Hi Janet
Possible bit of info for you. The notice below the Derwent Dam only applies at the weekends. You can take your car to the top of the valley week days . If in doubt ask at the Fairholmes visitors centre, or at the ranger station behind. Access during the week can be denied but only usually for engineering works. Have you been to the Kings tree at the head of the valley? Lots think its a pub but its a tree planted by a king the current monarchs father. The Dambusters Museum is in the West Tower of the Derwent Dam its usually open on Sundays but hasn't been some of the time of late any ideas what's happening regarding access
