We had a fantastic afternoon being shown round by extremely knowledgeable, enthusiastic guides Gill and Colin. They knew so much about the people who lived there, how the machinery worked and gave us a flavour of the working conditions. Well worth the visit, will definitely visit again.

What a gem of a museum! The volunteer staff were so welcoming, knowledgeable and friendly and there was so much to see. Definitely one of the most interesting museums I’ve visited as you could access so much of it and it was truly like stepping back in time. It’s been very well thought out and I would definitely recommend as it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience from the knitting framework workrooms to the workers cottages and definitely the cafe and shop. We will spread the word and we will be back! Thank you for a great day out.

Amazing museum in an original hosiery workshop! (My wife has ancestors who were framework knitters)
You can see how the workers lived, and tour the workshop, where many of the actual frames are still in operation.
The volunteers were extremely knowledgeable. Our guide, Gill, helped bring the whole thing to life, and even knitted a few rows to show us the process.
Great cafe with a lovely garden as well.
Highly recommended if you are interested in industrial and social history.

Loved it - both from an industrial history point of view, and the social history of the "stockingers" and "seamers" who worked there, at first with the frame knitting machines in their own tiny cottages, then with much larger machines in the "frame shops". So noisy, with up to 20 machines working 14 hours a day, 6 days a week, that the workers went deaf. It was a hard life, poorly rewarded, as not only did they have to rent their cottages and the machines, buy the cotton to knit, and pay for the stockings to be transported to market, but thy were on piecework, so they got no pay if they were unable to work !
Volunteer guides Sally and Colin were excellent and the Reception staff were welcoming and friendly. I enjoyed my hands-on-experience in the Circular Knitting Shop which has an interesting video about the museum and the Luddites, as well as displays of many kinds of very fancy stockings, including Queen Victoria's!
There's a small shop with an interesting selection of (mostly) knitting-themed gifts, and a café with outdoor tables (as well as indoor ones) for a sunny day, And their white chocolate blondie is out-of-this world!

Visited this museum and original preserved cottages of the frame knitting workshop manager and another family. An extremely fascinating experience even for those without knitting knowledge.
The volunteers were more than happy to show us and detail how the knitting frames were operated and the working conditions of all the men who worked in the on-site workshop.
The cottages were a great example of how families lived and coped in the time.

A gem of a place. Very atmospheric and full of surprises. Whether your interest is textiles, crafts, social history, working class lives, working conditions, machinery, mechanics, housing, art, gardens, a cup of coffee and some cake - or all of those - you will find so much here to interest you, and you'll learn a lot. One of the best things about this place is the enthusiasm, knowledge, friendliness and helpfulness of the volunteers; they really are the soul of this wonderful museum. It's small, but there's enough to see and do to occupy you for hours.

Stumbled across this little gem whilst visiting the area and I am very glad I did! The staff (mostly volunteers) who run this place were welcoming and had bundles of information. It was really admirable to see their passion for the history and heritage of the place. A really well presented venue with knowledgeable staff. I wish I had more time to have seen everything but that just motivates me to return :) and I really hope I can return there (not least as I ended up buying an annual ticket ) There was also a nice little coffee shop on site. Highly recommended for a visit.

Note Sunday opening times 1.30 til 4pm. I would have like to spend longer there. Fortunately as i have my annual pass i can go again and get in free. A really enjoyable afternoon. The volunteers were so friendly and knew so much. Great little place to visit. Lovely coffee and garden outside. I'll go again on my next trip to the area.
Local people also just using the cafe and seems like a thriving part of the community. Thank you!

This is a very interesting place to visit to gain an insight into the lives of the framework knitters who made stockings in the 19th century. It was fascinating to see how the framework knitters lived and worked and to learn just how difficult their lives were. The museum is staffed by very friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic volunteers, who showed us around, demonstrated the machines, and answered all our questions. My friend and I enjoyed having a go on the more modern circular knitting machines! We also enjoyed our lunch in the museum's cafe and had a nice walk around Ruddington afterwards. I would highly recommend the Framework Knitters' Museum if you're looking for an interesting day out!

Thank you for your inquiry. Access to the museum is not straight forward, the site offers a number of challenges. However you can find details of our provision in our Access Statement which can be found at the bottom of our website page concerning opening times. Sadly Trip Advisor does not allow me to include a link. Regards.
