On the site of the New Bodleian Library

With the vast number of books and publications continually being acquired by the Bodleian Libraries storage space is a constant challenge.

This led to the remodelling of the New Bodleian Library in the 2000s to give an end result renamed the Weston. Overall on its opening in 2015 it gave not only much enhanced storage but also a
pleasanter experience for readers and visitors.

It is here that tours of the Old Bodleian and Radcliffe Camera are booked. A café and gift shop are within.

First rate exhibitions and a very good café

We came here for a very decent quality light lunch and stayed to look around the 2 excellent free exhibitions - the first on Kafka and the second exploring the way writers change the drafts of their prose. As always the exhibits are really first rate.

Writerly joy

I came to the Weston specifically to see the current exhibit of writers' first drafts and notebook jottings. I was not disappointed. As an author myself, I was practically moved to tears to see the early jottings, scratch-outs, and retries of my favorite novel (Excellent Women) of one of my favorite authors (Barbara Pym). Well done, Weston!

Fantastic Chaucer exhibition

We popped in and gratefully found the toilets and cafe right at the front, handy if you need a quick loo/food stop. Toilets were clean.
We didn’t know the Chaucer exhibition was on, but it was a great find!
Very interesting to walk through and read about the history of such a prominent and influential author. We certainly learnt a lot and it was great to see some rare and very old books. The space was great.
Didn’t see much else, there is an old tapestry by the cafe.
Definitely worth a quick visit, and the shop was lovely, ended up buying a few books.

Avoid the cafe - only after your £££ -not to be trusted

We sat for literally a few minutes in the coffee shop area and I got out my laptop to check something. The chap clearing up told me laptops are not allowed. I was told this was to save wi-fi for 'visitors'. Not sure what category we fall into as we were visiting Oxford and the library. It was evident that this was to increase revenue. If this is their strategy one has to wonder where else they take short cuts. With their suppliers, staff welfare, ingredients or hygiene measures perhaps? Avoid the cafe. Go to Nero in the Blackwells bookshop a few doors down and support a local business. Lovely service and you can sit with your laptop and good wi-fi all day if you wish.

Dear ScootLondon, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on your experience. The Weston Library café allows laptops to be used at certain times, avoiding peak periods to ensure customers are able to eat at a table. As a café in a working library, customers wishing to purchase lunch have previously been unable to sit down because someone is working at their laptop therefore a policy was required. It does seem that on this occasion the policy was enforced very quickly and rigidly which I would like to apologise for. I can assure you that we have high standards when it comes to suppliers, staff welfare, ingredients and hygiene measures. We appreciate your honest feedback. Tutankhamen exhibit

Came to the Tutankhamen exhibit with documents and photographs teeming the story of the discovery and meticulous labelling of the great find. Very interesting and learnt a few things I didn’t know before.
