We started out from Ludlow, walked past the castle, over the river and then headed towards the Mortimer Forest area. It’s quite a climb from the town centre via a series of public access footpaths. Once there we found it to be a very peaceful and quiet environment, certainly on the day we went. There’s a car park in the middle of the forest with picnic benches for a pit stop, but no other facilities (not a bad thing).
Otherwise there are several different trails, some very muddy even in August. Signposting on paths was fairly minimal, and could make navigation tricky for some, so having some GPS as a back up is a good idea.
But there are some wonderful openings in the wooded landscapes offering sweeping views of the surroundings Shropshire countryside and a hilly terrain to get your heart rate going. At one point we could see the the tops of the Malvern Hills ( a good 40 miles away).
But above all, bar a few other hikers, it felt like we had this large space to ourselves during the few hours we spent here.
We chose a different route to get back into Ludlow (thankfully downhill). A very rewarding visit.

Lovely forest. Be aware one car park closes at 3pm.
Nice easy walk for less able/fit walkers and a few more challenging walks with stunning views (worth the steep paths!)
Signage could be improved, but you can download routes before hand

Lovely, huge forest. Plenty of paths but I stuck to the main ones , there are easy to follow marks as well. Some areas near the car parks are busy but some areas there is no one around.

Well recommended walking area. Follow the ‘Climbing Jack’ trail if feeling fit and well, otherwise there are less demanding trails available. Stunning views from the top of the hills

Really beautiful forest with great views. So quiet, when I stopped walking and just listened, I could only hear birds.
I did the 9 mile walk which was great. My only issue was the amount of dog poo on the black pool section. The rest of the walk was clean.
Will definitely be back. It was great to spend a few hours in the forest.

Great place to walk the dogs, one of ours is young and not always to be trusted but he had the best time running around off lead for well over an hour and was shattered later :) Some lovely clearly marked walks with good viewpoints. Not too muddy even in January. Just on the outskirts of Ludlow.

Easy parking and various trails which are clearly marked. We got off the beaten track but you soon pick up the routes again.,

The forest is just outside Ludlow up in the hills so a good walk uphill along the stone track or through the woods. Fabulous view over Shroprshire once you reach the top.

A beautiful forestry woodland, with paths that crisscross the area. Visited with our friends and a gang of six Miniature Schnauzer dogs who ran themselves crazy exploring the area.
