My friend and I visited in March 2023 and had a lovely time. Fortunately we arrived 10 minutes before the Kitchen tour at 11.00 am, which cost an extra £3, but was well worth it. A volunteer told us all about the kitchen and also about the staff, it was very interesting and was supposed to take 45 minutes but was about 55 minutes. We then toured the castle and really enjoyed it. We had tea sitting outside at the pop up cafe. However, if you want something more substantial you need to go to the cafe at the Watermill. We had a very interesting talk from the Miller. We didn’t walk around the gardens as the weather wasn’t great. It is close to Dunster village which is pleasant to look around.

Visitors can enjoy hours of fun in the castle, mill, and gardens. Every staff member greeted us with a smile and helpful bits of information. Chris Hobbs provided a comprehensive and insightful kitchen tour. The castle tour should not be missed, as one can see the sea from some windows. Staff in various rooms provided historical footnotes, all as a pianist played in the background. Signage is helpful. The castle staff also seemed welcoming to children. We were able to get a gluten-free scone and a tasty sausage roll at a pop-up cafe just outside the castle entrance. All aspects of our visit were positive.

Don't go to the castle if you're expecting to see The Black Knight. The castle have decided that it does not depict the appropriate era for the type of building that the castle has now become. This is mainly a Victorian home and that is the theme which the Trust wish to portray, despite the site having over a thousand years of history dating back to the year 1086.

Mobility Impaired and using public transport is quite a complex way to visit. ..no doubt some people can afford to use a taxi ...which would make a much simpler trip. I caught the bus from Minehead only a short bus ride. There is only one bus stop near the castle (return bus stop opposite) to access the castle I asked a local couples advice as I got off the bus. Dunster is a stunningly beautiful village. But is incredibly steep and has some undulations going on...up a steep bit..down a steep bit.. cobbled pavements. So walking with s stick/crutches/sticks (other than functional hiking/walkers sticks can be a bit tricky. So take PLENTY of time for your walking elements. Took me close to 30 mins to walk up what is the main access road into Dunster Castle as this looked the least steep...I also knew once at the cat park (opening times permitting) there would be transport fo take me up to the castle itself. Please call prior to visiting with any questions..the staff are very happy to help. Navigating the castle driveway was a bit tricky..a narrow driveway with only passing points meant a lot of standing on the grass whilst cars passed me and each other. Walking on the grass with sticks was a bit damp and soft this springtime of year.... on arrival I paid the entrance fee..and was directed to the mini bus that took me up to the castle building entrance. By gosh...it is impressive. Beautiful gardens and surrounding areas. Inside the entrance very helpful staff and volunteers offered a guide and pointed me in the right direction. Rooms are well laid out well planned and all have a back story available to read. Plenty to see and do...the interiors are well conserved and preserved..Staff always helpful to point things out. There are stairs.. quite a lot. But.. shallow steps.. and sturdy bannisters. So I was able to manage to get around.. albeit at a slow pace... the views are SPECTACULAR...it was a wonderful clear day on my visit.. so could see for miles out towards the beach. Worth a visit. Plan plenty of time for the lots of walking. ..I returned to the bus stop via the village. It took quite a bit longer.. on the whole an enjoyable afternoon.

I'm sure we visited this castle years ago but it was nice to return with time to look round the inside of the castle. It is nicely laid out with lots of info about its history down the ages. And it's all easily accessible.
The gardens are a treat to walk round providing some great views inland and out to sea. Full of tender plants they benefit from the mild climate. The wooded area by the river is a contrast. We had a cuppa in the café at the bottom of the estate, sitting outside the water mill by the river, with frost on the ground.
Well worth a visit if you're in the area.

Mon 13th Feb 2023 - and my first ever visit to Dunster Castle. Overall I would certainly recommend visiting. The staff were all very welcoming and we had an enjoyable visit. At £14.30 entry per person (gift aided) I felt it was a fair price to pay, totalling £57.20 for our group of 4. However, then there was another £5.50 to pay for parking - and I started to feel we were being rinsed a bit.
The castle and its grounds are a delight to behold, particularly with the wonderful views to the nearby coastline. There were some unwanted views in the form of the large amount of unwelcoming signs barking orders in almost room and at every turn 'DO NOT', 'NOT ALLOWED', KEEP OFF'. The signs could be better reworded: "Visitors are kindly asked to....." It sounds a lot less abrasive.
The admission prices increase to £17.60 (gift aided) from March and whilst I enjoyed my visit, with a few tweaks things could be even better.

Dunster By Candlelight was just magical. Such a lovely experience and have always wanted to go. Recommend getting the coach from a pre-organised car park as saves faffing around and grab some food while there, plenty of stalls etc. Great entertainment and wrap up warm!

This was our second visit to the castle, and we were fortunate that the Christmas decorations were still up and carols were being played which made it even more magical. Lots of history and family stories, fantastic views as it is on top of the hill. Children were involved with finding the hidden robins, a lovely touch. The guides, volunteers and paid, were helpful and friendly. We had lunch at the watermill cafe', very pleasant.
We will go again.

My husband liked the inside of the castle but I felt underwhelmed. It didn't come up with all the goodies I (perhaps childishly) hoped to see in a castle with bags of history - access to towers, dungeons, huge kitchens etc. We could have been in an NT house (not a castle) and not a particularly memorable one. However, the grounds and the watermill are well worth the parking fee (so skip the ££ payment to see inside) and the flour I bought from the mill on my visit is lovely to work with and makes very nice bread.

I know it is a Faber mezzotint. I just was so excited at making the connection weeks after the visit I did not make it clear that it was based on the Kneller portrait of the rather dislikable Mohun.

No booking, just go to welcome desk in house and ask, spaces limited so be early, think they are approx hourly, times shown on a frame board to the left of the main door entrance before the steps

The previous post is correct, however there is a shuttle which goes up to the castle from the car park and there are extensive areas of level ground around the castle itself with some beautiful views. There are entrance ramps and disabled facilities and the castle itself is still worth seeing even if the ground floor is only accessible.

The gardens. Not sure about the castle as such but you don't necessarily need to visit the castle the gardens are as beautiful as castle. however some slopes.

Sorry I don't know, but the national trust website is pretty useful. They do have buggies to run people from the car park to the castle, but not sure about the facilities inside.

The car park is in the grounds of the castle but is also very close to the village it's self. If you or a member of your party has low mobility I did notice that the castle operates a mini bus from the car park up to the castle. Hope this was helpful:-)
