A great place to visit particularly if your interests are with the engineering and construction of buildings of that period. Mind boggling how the whole building came to be from the cutting of timber at local woods to the actual construction offsite and then on site itself.
Amazing what could be done with the basic tooling available at the time.
The top floor dedicated to the Staffordshire Regiment was worth a visit in its own right.

Firstly I suggest you ring before you visit as they tend to close and not put it up on the website.
The first few floors are a museum and the top floor is the Yeomanry museum of the British Army, which was interesting.
The outside of the building is very impressive apart from the cheap phone shop and stuff tucked away underneath it. Totally spoils it.
The staff were a bit miserable. Obviously didn’t want to chat.
Stafford itself didn’t impress me very much. The church was closed and the shops are just high street usuals, charity shops, bookies, etc.
The car parks are free though.

Free local museum with a number of themed rooms representing its history and the Staffordshire Yeomanry museum in the attic. Ideal for a wet winter's morning.

Interesting house glad it wasn't demolished. Free entry. A pity the surrounding buildings have been changed to a McDonalds etc.

What a treasure! Stafford is extremely fortunate to have such a beautiful piece of history. We came to visit with a pushchair, which the staff allowed us to leave at the bottom of the stairs, next to the reception (inside the building). It was amazing being able to go back in time and see what an original Tudor house used to look like.

A wonderful place to visit that has it all. Very well thought out displays, and a very knowledgeable staff who were able to talk in depth about military history. Regimental section very interesting.

Discover what happened when King Charles visited Stafford, see ancient pottery, explore the construction of the house and local literary figures. Also contains the local regimental museum. It is over 4 floors and quite steep stairs at some points. Free to enter.

Never knew this place even existed even though we live nearby! So fascinating and free! Even if it wasnt free it would be worth paying for. Would definitely recommend it if visiting Stafford.

Outstanding historic house right in the middle of the town with very good explanations of how it was built - major parts laid out on the ground beforehand like an IKEA job - and its history. Worth taking time to read the handwritten memoirs of a shopkeeper's 19th century youth and the mischief they got up then. Very helpful staff and it's entirely free - donations or gift shop purchases obviously welcomed. There's also an excellent walking trail for central Stafford, online or you can get a copy at Tourist Information at the Gatehouse Theatre (but you will probably have to qsk for it; none on display when we went).

This is a fascinating house in the centre of Stafford. It’s free to visit. There are three stories of exhibits, which demonstrate the history of the house, and how it was built. There is also a military exhibition at the top. It is rumoured that there is a ghost in residence. There is certainly an atmosphere in some of the rooms. There is a gift shop on the ground floor and a very helpful member of staff. Well worth spending half an hour here.

I'm physically disabled in that I find it hard to enter the High House (& leave!) by the main entrance because the steps are so very steep and there is no handrail to use. Is there an alternate entrance/exit I could use please?

There may be trademan's entrance and lift at the back but not sure. There are issues for disabled customers wanting access to the fine period building.

There are several car parks nearby, on Broad St, Chell Rd and the Guildhall Centre. All are pay-for. There are disabled spaces on these car parks and it's best to read the terms - e.g. Broad St & Chell Rd the 1st 4 hours free, Guildhall is payable at all times I think. There are some on-road areas for blue badge holders, if you ask locals most are aware of where these are

The Ancient High House is open from Tuesday to Saturday 10.00am - 4.00pm. Admission is free with the exception of some events. For Bank Holiday opening details please check with the Visitor Information Centre on 01785 619619.
