Absolutely beautiful and educational
2021年10月
BOSCOBEL HOUSE AND THE ROYAL OAK, is a hidden gem!

It is a perfect place to discover one of history's great adventure stories and educational for young adults and children to see how the citizens lived in that period 16th Century, with outside privy!

Curd mill and cheese press in the dairy display, on the ground floor

It is also a place for a romantic stroll - to the farm; The restored parterre garden; The Mount, with the Royal Oak (where Charles II hid from Cromwell and parliamentary staff during the Civil War ), and children play area.

There is also a Tea Room!

If it wasn't for Charles
2021年10月
If it wasn't for Charles II, this house wouldn't feature. But because of him, it does and really that's where it ends. It's a great story and to be here to learn about him and that he hid here and in a tree, which is not the actual tree, is interesting.

The guides dressed up in period costume and being given candles, which are placed on specific points throughout the house were informative, but it's somewhat lacklustre aside from the underlying story of Charles II.

Service in the tea room was lovely.

Just lovely
2021年9月 • 夫妻情侣
We visited Boscobel because we were running out of time to get to Moseley Old Hall. Very welcoming staff who were pleased to see us even though we're CADW members! The young man went out of his way to explain where everything was and give us loads of information . After a much needed stop at the spotless loos we headed to the tea room first. Very pleasant young ladies chatted with us and one offered to carry our tray outside for us.
The portion of the house that is open is fairly small but very interesting and atmospheric. A costumed member of staff was interesting and informative.
The gardens are lovely to relax in and we enjoyed saying hello to the livestock too. Will recommend

Very atmospheric place, lovely garden & greeted at the house by very knowledgeable guide.
2021年9月
Wanted to come here after reading about Charles ll. The suitably dressed [for the period] guide who greeted us in the doorway was incredibly knowledgeable & informative & the pictorial display added well to that information. Unfortunately we were on a tight schedule as doing several places in Shropshire the same day, so had to cut him short slightly, but I cannot fault the guide at all & ordinarily although I have a reasonable knowledge of the period, would've enjoyed hearing the rest of the information. Further information was also provided by the room guides.
The garden though small, was a lovely place to sit & eat our lunch.
The only reason I've not given 5 stars, was the disappointment of not being able to stand any closer to 'the' tree. I can completely understand why it has to be protected, but thought we'd get close & stand by the old fence, but although this is only a descendant of the original tree, there's been another fence around a large perimeter. I'm sure there were probably good reasons for this to do with preservation, but it was still a little disappointing.
Still worth going though & very atmospheric,

Excellent for Gluten Free in cafe, and inserting place for a visit
2021年8月
Excellent range of home made Gluten Free cakes in the cafe, more so than the usual English Heritage property. The current manger of the cafe eats gluten free er self and keeps gluten and non gluten separate knowing the trouble contamination can cause. We were impressed, and so were our children, who have coeliac disease, with their GF Victoria Sponge!
As to the place itself, it is also an interesting day / half day out. English Heritage seem to be trying to build it up a bit, so have introduced heritage breeds of some farm animals. The house is interesting because of its historical role, and the displays give enough information without overload. The gardens (19th century) are small, but pretty and interesting. We also enjoyed the mile long walk down to the ruins of White Lady Priory.
Our children (12 & 10) enjoyed our visit too. I've not given it 5 stars because its not one of the major sights, like Dover or Carisbrooke Castles, but we are glad we went. You could probably see it all easily in 3-4 hours, and do the highlight in less.

Disappointing
2021年7月 • 家庭
Rubbish, got given a candle to walk around the house but no other information on the house given unless you paid £4 for the guidebook. The candle is supposed to connect to various points and become interactive. It didn’t work in some rooms at all. The gardens are very run down. Wasps outside and around the tea room, ridiculous amounts not just a few. Not enough seating. Play area very small. Of all the English heritage sites we have been too this is the most disappointing. Would not return or recommend.

Gardens very dissappointing
2021年8月 • 夫妻情侣
House and it's history very interesting. Pleased to see so many young oak trees planted.
We were very dissapoined with the gardens, which are in need of a great deal of maintenance. Not many places to sit outside.

Our Great Boscobel Visit
2021年8月
Our visit to Boscobel House was a first class experience, the Staff/Volunteers were all
Dressed in period costume and were extremely helpful.
The house itself has been well maintained and realistic
We were fortunate with the weather and were able to walk in the Gardens, again, maintained to reflect the period of King Charles.
We also saw the descendent of The Original Oak.

Not so good
2021年8月 • 夫妻情侣
We visited a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it with a really enthusiastic guide going round with us. We returned yesterday as we had heard they had made some improvements, so we were curious. As we entered we were given a 'candle' which had to be placed in certain areas as a guide. Except it wasn't, it activated a few shadows and sound effects. Just not the same as having a person going round with you. Maybe if it gave you information it would have been better. On the whole a little disappointing. On a positive, the cake and coffee was good !!
