Definitely worth a visit! I had a lovely tour with Karen - strongly recommend taking a tour as you learn so much more than you would walking round on your own. It's a wonderful space with a fascinating history. There is also a super fun lego exhibit! The tour takes about an hour, plus I'd recommend 30min or so to admire the cathedral on your own and check out the cloisters. This cathedral has a deceptive appearance - it looks like it could have been built hundreds of years ago but the most recent additions are as new as the 2000s - this stunning building is not to be missed if you're in Bury St Edmunds.

The christmas Carol service was replaced by too tihghly packed stalls, such that you couldnot stop to look at the stalls very well.

This cathedral feels bright and welcoming. Having recently visited several somewhat stuffy cathedrals in France and Spain, this one in Bury St Edmunds felt part of the modern world. It struck me as a living community space. I particularly liked the intricate Lego building model and the medieval font with the amazing cover which at first sight appears to hover over it but actually has a counterweight tucked away in a corner. Don't miss the craftsmanship of the millennium tower.

We finally took our 9yr old son here, usually we only visit just us adults. Today we added bricks to the Lego cathedral, our son was very happy to help make the disabled toilet. There was also a tapestry art exhibit which was so stunning and colourful. We love visiting here when in Bury it’s such a beautiful place and the grounds are amazing.

Stunning Cathedral! The staff are very helpful and knowledgeable, more than happy to give information and enhance your experience. Plenty of free leaflets as you arrive so you can have a read through uninterrupted if you prefer. They have QR codes around the building so you have digital access to more detailed info if you want it. The more you look, the more you find! The cathedral is in beautiful surroundings right next to Abbey Gardens, it's so ornate and well kept. They have a lovely gift shop which sells a range of interesting items, I thought the prices were very reasonable.
They have added a modern touch to the place with the use of QR codes and flat screen monitors while keeping the old charm.

Everything about this building is remarkable even if Simon Jenkins only gives it 2 stars! The Perpendicular tower was only completed in 2010, the chancel 50 years earlier but all blending perfectly with the 1500’s Perpendicular architecture of the original building. Without the enormous legacy of cathedral architect, Stephen Dykes Bower, the tower would never have emerged to dominate the Bury skyline, now the towns tallest building. Book a tower tour for £10, definitely worthwhile particularly as the cathedral is free.

How far is the cathedral from the station - walking distance?
It takes about 10/15 minutes to walk. There are two routes - either through the town centre or straight along Fornham Road/Northgate Street (more or less in a straight line from the station to Angel Hill, where the Cathedral is located)

Cost of the tower
The Millennium Project, which included the building of the Tower, was funded from 3 sources. The project would not have happened had it not been for a bequest of £2 million from the Stephen Dykes Bower Trust (the former Cathedral architect who died in 1994). In addition to this gift, £4 million was raised through public appeal and £6 million was provided by the Millennium Commission, therefore making the total project cost £12 million (Tower, Chapel of the Transfiguration, North Transept, Crypt Treasury and East Cloisters).
