Lovely walk
Great hike with beautiful views. We went around 10am on a Saturday morning - ample parking available. Really enjoyed the walk...although some areas where a bit slippery after the rain - suggest good shoes to be safe. There are different walks available - highly recommend the stepping stones path.

Lovely views but very busy
2021年8月 • 家庭
Decided to visit on a nice Sunday afternoon as I hadn’t been for a long while. Got to the top car park and there was absolutely nowhere to park! Cars going round and round the car park looking for a space so I went back down to the stepping stones car park which was also packed, with cars parked on verges out on main road. Managed to squeeze in after waiting for someone to leave. No parking machine to scan membership card so couldn’t put ticket on the car and spent ages fiddling around trying to get the app which didn’t solve the problem. Extremely busy. There was a constant stream of people coming across the stepping stones so we waited patiently for ages but in the end I had to shout across the river for someone to stop and let us across. Not the best start to our visit. Not easy to be socially distanced going up the steps to the top of the hill with panting people all around 😳. Beautiful views from the top and managed to get an ice cream just before the NT closed. Worth the climb up the hill but won’t be coming again on a Sunday, advise getting there early if you do.

A challenging hike but worth the hard yards. Lovely views.
Decided to do the Box Hill hike with my family. The hike trail can be found on the national trust website.

Plenty of parking in Box Hill, although not free. If you are planning on the advertised 8 mile hike then you will need all day parking. I believe it was around £6. There is no machine as such so you will either need to install an app or pay online. Tried phoning the advertised phone number but its virtually impossible to get through all the menu options and you end up being cut off.

The hike is definately a challenge, not for the faint hearted or for those with health or mobility issues. Lots of steep inclines and desecents, I think walking poles useful in slippery conditions it was pretty muddy and narrow in places.

Views in certain places spectacular. Its a great experience. I would say it was much longer than 8 miles and it took over 5 hours.

The hike is reasonably sign posted. I would recommend googling the box hill hike and there are good directions on the national trust website. Without these I think there is a chance we would have gotten lost. There are a couple of places where the sign posts are absent / obscured and we did get lost twice and had to turn back. We are lucky that we bumped into some very kind folk who had done the hike before who gave us valuable directions.

Its not a busy location - the weather was mostly overcast so we only came across a handful of people.

There is a cafe in the car park for welcome refreshments.

I would recommend the hike but as mentioned it is a challenge, tiring for those who aren't fit or who have mobility issues.

Hiking boots a must. Come prepared bring fluids and plenty of snacks and food.

A lovely place, but .......
Haven't been here since watching the womens cycle race in 2012 and it still commands lovely views and walks. However there is a board outside the National Trust kiosk advising of several different walks. I have had both hips replaced twice so not as mobile as i might be but quite capable of doing a 3 + mile walk, so we opted for the Happy Valley walk - 3 miles. Happy it most certainly wasn't! it is incredibly steep and uneven, at one point you go down many, many steps to get to a flattish bit at the bottom and then a killing climb which eventually brings you out to Smith & Weston. You cross the road & the signpost points you down yet another hill which requires yet another climb. By this time I was so exhausted my husband had to jog along the road to the car park & get the car! I would question whether this is actually only 3 miles and the NT really needs to point out that this is a very steep walk and unsuitable for anyone with even the merest of mobility issues.

This a brilliant place! We wanted to visit as we are Jane Austen fans. Loved the viewpoints and how well labelled the trails were . Recommend taking a picture of the maps on your phone too . We walked the stepping stones walk and then the happy valley trail . Like other reviews get there early to get parked and enjoy the viewpoint . The staff in the cafe were lovely and the coffee was great after a long walk . Toilets very well maintained . Our small down point is the Sheperd Hut was closed so we couldn't get a magnet . 100% would recommend and would go again if I lived closer.

Picnic heaven

We enjoyed the drive up, view spectacular especially once you get to the viewing point.
No seating so you can only sit on the damp grass. I am sure a few wooden benches would be a good idea especially for the less mobile like myself.
A cafe and toilet was welcome news.
Car park available, you can pay cash or card.
Lovely place for a picnic on a sunny day.

Excellent, great views but so busy
Clearly this has been a go-to place in Covid, and why not, fab views, space, fresh air etc. But if you try to park at the top it can be hard to find a place, the cafe has queues, as does the viewpoint...and that's midweek!
The last couple of times we've been we've opted to park at the bottom (Rykas), walk up to admire the view (good for muscles!), then back down the riverside walk past the Stepping Stones. Saves stress along the ZigZag and in the top car parks.

Iconic viewpoint over Dorking and the surrounding hills
Visited here whilst staying in Dorking recently. We decided the only way up was the (rather steep and full of steps!) path which forms part of the North Downs Way (a diversion for us from the Mole Gap Trail) but it made the views and the rest at the top all the more worthwhile! On a clear day I suspect you could see all the way to the coast (??) but not on the day we visited. Was sunny but slightly hazy in the distance but the views are still lovely. The advantage with coming in on the North Downs Way is that (from one direction) there's the lovely stepping stones walk across the River Mole, so going back that way was nice to cool the feet off in the running water and take pics on the stepping stones!

Short Break In Dorking
Walked up the south facing slope from Dorking.
Great view from the viewpoint.
Handily placed NT cafe for refreshments and toilets if need be.
Walked back down the other side to Westhumble.
There a couple of walks at the top as displayed on the notice board near the cafe.
