Lovely setting and some interesting art
The setting in the Surrey woodlands is lovely . We didn't have time to see the main gallery but were allowed a glimpse of the enormous horse which comes at the end of the tour . We weren't very overwhelmed by the current, modern exhibition but we appreciated the beautiful contents of the gallery shop and enjoyed a rather expensive piece of cake in the gardens . We had a wander through the woods and saw the recently constructed theatre/lecture stage in its arboreal setting . Unfortunately no time to look at the church either so a return visit will be necessary when we are next 'down South'.

Stunning pictures

Loved the paintings. A beautiful place, and staff very friendly. So close to the A3 and didn't know this was here. The Watts gallery paintings are so evocative, and help the onlooker see further.
Cafe served drinks and beautiful pottery, worth it rather than takeaway cups.

We were fortunate to be able to book the first slot of the day at 10.30, but the cafe opens at 10, and so does the shop. Suitably fortified, we made our way to the gallery, a single storey building, displaying Watts’ paintings, some De Morgan pottery and paintings, and a temporary exhibition of Tuke paintings. We were struck by how many styles of painting Watts produced, and by the enormous size of his sculptures. The grounds were lovely, with pretty borders, and plenty of picnic tables. Next we walked up to the chapel, only about five minutes away, and saw Watts’ and his wife’s grave, and that of Aldous Huxley. The chapel is rather odd, but must have made a great deal of work to carry out all Mary Watts’ plans. We walked up to see the outside of the Watts’s house, an attractive Arts and Crafts building, but sadly it wasn’t open, and I was very sorry to read that all the furniture was sold when Mrs Watts died, and the niche where she used to read to ‘signor’ had been destroyed.
Back to enjoy our picnic, and off we went. There was a very civilised atmosphere, and the other visitors and volunteers were quiet and well mannered, which made us very glad we had been there, as the whole experience was delightful and life enhancing.

So Much to See
Great Arts and Crafts Village. The architecture was really interesting and the Exhibitions very enjoyable, especially the William De Morgan pots and tiles and the Ruskin Art. We will go back when the house is open!

Architecture, art, walk, good food
Something for everyone at this very interesting collection of buildings. Shop and free gallery presented a variety of craft and books etc. You can visit the beautiful chapel for free and have a good walk on the public paths that run through the estate.
The main gallery had a permanent collection which presented the works of Watts extremely well. It is a rare opportunity to see the development and range of this talented artist.
The cafe has a very good range of quality food and there is ample outside seating in very nice grounds. Popular with cyclists. On a bus route (doesn’t run on Sunday)

Inspirational history to this picturesque haven for artists
This gallery was built to house the work of Victorian artist George Watts and was the idea of his wife and fellow artist/designer, Mary Watts. The permanent display of George Watts's work includes some well known paintings, such as Hope (Barrack Obama mentioned it in a speech). Many of the paintings have a Pre-Raphaelite feel, and reflect his interest in social issues, such as Found Drowned. There is a leaflet with details of all the paintings included in the entrance cost, but it is worth getting the guidebook for information on the wider background to both George and Mary's lives and the history of the buildings. The chapel, designed by Mary, which is just down the road, is well worth a visit too as it has a splendid interior. There are also temporary exhibitions, such as John Ruskin when I was there. A highlight also for me was the contemporary gallery with the beautiful and evocative etchings of Norman Ackroyd.

Completely worthwhile!
If you’re into the arts and crafts of Arts and Crafts you’ll love this place. It’s set out in different buildings and locations, all within a short walk. Each area has a unique quality and captures the imagination. George Watts and his wife Mary were blessed with unbridled artistic talent. The Chapel is a masterpiece, the architecture and artwork are simply inspirational. The cafe serves quality food and great coffee. A place to return to, and return we will.

A real insight into artists lives

Whether your interest is in art of the Symbolist Movement or general pre raphaelite art, the Watts Gallery and Artists Village is well worth a visit. Just outside Guildford in the village of Compton both the gallery complex and church has easy access by car or bus from Guildford station. The complex is fully accessible and features a small tea room.
One can visit the studios where George and Mary Watts worked and lived. The gallery houses works by both of them and the church is a truly one off experience.
