The major physical site in the region, a big river that was once used to bring coal down from the mines to ships. This was also once a ship building area. Now some splendid bridges cross the river, linking the north and south. Some pleasant riverside development.

I walked quite a long section of the river as part of the Wallsend to Heddon-on-the-Wall Path. Much around Newcastle Quay is sealed and a pleasant walk, further on it can be a bit muddy.

I think History dates from Battle of Hastings, Roman times, Hadrian's Wall ends in Rosehill by a burn.
The Tyne Bridge/George V (1928);
the High Level Bridge (1849);
The Redheugh bridge (
the Swing Bridge (1876);
the Millennium Bridge/Queen Elizabeth (2001)
The Chain bridge (1831-1967) was replaced
by Scotswood road Bridge (1968)
The Scotswood rail bridge:
1st was wooden, opened in 1839; 2nd in 1860; 3rd in 1865; 4th, a
wrought-iron, six-span version in 1871.

The River Tyne is the river that defines Newcastle, approximately 73 miles in length, it weaves its way through the city and is really impressive to view .
My twin brother Stephen and I decided to have a week's break in Newcastle and stayed in a hotel under the Tyne Bridge which spans the River Tyne
I love walking along the banks of the River Tyne ,the beautiful views of the river, the stunning bridges that cross this river and the great pubs,bars and restaurants that line either side of the river, we visited The Slug & Lettuce, By The River Brew Co , Hard Rock Cafe, The Quayside and many many more on our stay in the city,its most definitely well worth checking out if you're planning a trip to Newcastle.
