An interesting part of Newcastle's history, presented in a fun way with friendly and knowledgable guides, in a lovely part of Newcastle.

I’ve been wanting to visit the Victoria Tunnel for sometime and I’m glad that I’ve finally done it. What an amazing piece of engineering built in the 1800’s to transport coal from a pit on the edge of Newcastle down to the tyne for transport to London and elsewhere. It was repurposed during World War Two as an air aid shelter. It’s amazing to think that until quite recently it was relatively unknown having fallen in to disuse apart from a brief period as a mushroom farm !
We took the longer two our tour brilliantly guided by Graham. He took us on a tour beneath the city streets and back through time. Firstly, the history of the tunnel during the war and its use as an air raid shelter for 100’s of residents. We walked up a stretch of the tunnel from its riverside entrance up towards the city centre. The second part of the tour took us through the building of the tunnel in the mid 1800’s its short period in use and then its fall in to disuse.
The work of the volunteers at the Victoria Tunnel is excellent and keeps such an important piece of our history alive.
A special thanks to Graham our guide for bringing the story of the tunnel to life. His tour was the right balance of information and humour and the two hours flew over.
Thank you for a great afternoon.

Had a fantastic tour with Graham and Mike. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone interested in Newcastle history. Even though the weather was awful outside it was dry and nice inside the tunnel and we had so much fun hearing about the history.

My wife and I visited the tunnel today (Saturday 2nd Dec) and we weren’t disappointed.
Trish and Mal our tour leaders, were excellent from start to finish. They were welcoming and very knowledgeable, which made our experience that much better.
The history that is associated with the tunnel and the people who built it was wonderful to hear.
Through Victorian times and through World War Two, this tunnel has seen it all.
We would recommend you take the two hours out of your busy schedules and experience the tour for yourselves. You won’t be disappointed.

John och Graham lotsade oss genom omgivningar och tunnel på ett intressant och pedagogiskt sätt. Vi fick lära oss mycket, och är helnöjda med turen. Rekommenderas verkligen!

The guides Trish and Mal were superb story tellers, they really brought history to life. There were children there too and the guides were good at keeping them engaged too. We did the two hour tour in the evening and time flew.

Hi do you have to wear a hard hat ? Or is it optional ?

Hi, I am fairly certain for health and safety reasons you will have to wear the hard hat. Parts of the tunnel require you to stoop and obviously the tunnel is stone/brick. The hats are all cleaned between visitors.

My husband is in a wheelchair, would this be possible.

Thanks for your interest in bringing your husband in his wheelchair to the fantastic Victoria Tunnel. Because of the solid concrete WW2 Blast Walls, wheelchair access is restricted to the first 100 yards. If it's a foldable wheelchair we can get those around the Blast Walls, but that depends on whether the wheelchair user can walk approximately 10 yards. However, our guides are very happy to give wheelchair users a full verbal description of the Victoria Tunnel in those first 100 yards. I look forward to the time when we resume tours and if you book a tour mention at time of booking the position with the wheelchair. In the meantime keep safe and well.

Hi and thanks for your question. Our tours all start at 55 Lime Street Newcastle NE1 2PQ and finish on Ouse Street, next to Hotel du Vin NE1 2BE (close to Newcastle Quayside).

Can you take your own camera and freely take photos? I ask because we went on similar tour in Edinburgh and photos were not allowed (i think mainly because they took one of you and wanted you to buy it).

Yes, you can take your own
camera and take pictures but it is very dark and everyone has their own flashlight so you might struggle. There is a nice walk through the Ouseburn before the tour which will take some nice photos.

How close are the quarters inside the tunnels? Would someone 6’7” be hunched over ?

Thanks for your question, the Victoria Tunnel is six foot three high with the occasional section being slightly less, so people over six foot two inches have to wear hard helmets and do have to adjust their stance to avoid bumping their head.

How far do you have to walk please and could someone who needs a stick , following a knee operation manage this. Thank you.

I think it’s 1 and a quarter miles out and the same back. The floor of the tunnel is clean dry and level. There are wooden benches half way but if you could get hold of a hunting stick that opens into a seat, it would be useful. The staff will escort you back out if it gets too much anyway.
