My pal and I went for a tour which included going up on the roof (for those able) and down into the cellars. The guides clearly doing what they love for a living and shared their detailed knowledge of all parts of historical events, conditions across the years, history of buildings. We had went through tunnels and lots of behind the scenes, culminating in tea and cake! We were then free to explore the rest of the house on our own.

Temple Newsam is a large and rather magnificent looking property. There is so much to explore!! Some 40 odd rooms open to the public for viewing and all very accessible and interesting. Lovely, approachable staff. We spent a good few hours here and it wasn't enough (alas we had another commitment). So, do allow adequate time or you won't get the benefit of this amazing place.
There is a tea room/cafe on site if in need of some light refreshment.

Newstead Abbey
Key Highlights:
1. The Abbey
Medieval Architecture: Newstead Abbey was originally built as an Augustinian priory in 1170. Although it was converted into a private house after the dissolution of the monasteries, much of the original medieval architecture remains, including the West Front and the cloisters.
Lord Byron’s Home: The abbey became the seat of the Byron family in 1540. Lord Byron, one of England's greatest poets, lived here and many rooms have been preserved as they were during his time. Visitors can see Byron's private apartments, his study, and personal belongings.
Historical Exhibits: The abbey features exhibitions detailing its history from a medieval monastery to a romantic Gothic house. There are displays of letters, manuscripts, and portraits related to Lord Byron and his family.
2. Gardens and Grounds
Formal Gardens: The abbey is surrounded by stunning formal gardens, which include a Japanese garden, rose garden, and walled garden. Each offers a unique atmosphere, with beautifully maintained flower beds, sculptures, and water features.
The Lake: The large ornamental lake adds to the picturesque setting of the estate. It is a focal point for visitors, offering peaceful walks and opportunities to spot wildlife.
Woodland and Parkland: The surrounding parkland includes ancient woodlands and open meadows, perfect for leisurely strolls. The grounds also feature a series of themed gardens that reflect different historical periods.
Visitor Information:
Location: Ravenshead, Nottinghamshire, NG15 8NA
Transport: If you're coming from another city you can buy a railcard, I bought mine from trainpal, it's a bit of a hassle but a lot cheaper, enter RC777E on trainpal and you get a 20% discount.

I visited the house and farm with my baby. Pushchairs are not allowed in the house as they damage the flooring but I was kindly offered a waist support to help carry the little one around. The house is fabulous. Lots to see and we both enjoyed the farm. Please note the farm is cobbled, so tricky with a pushchair or pram. Great value for money!

What an absolutely stunning property this is. We had a wonderful guide, Shelley, who was so knowledgeable about the rich history of this great building. We were amazed at how much there was to see and hear about. We also visited the lovely animals.
What a beautiful setting this property is in. Just fantastic. Thank you to Shelley and the other guides we met which made it a great experience.

I visited Temple Newsam on 16th of July, 2024.
I'd recommend visiting website of Temple Newsam so that you can get some information or what you can see there.
I like to walk and enjoy nature so I expected to see the large garden and some unique animals at the farm. The garden was smaller than I expected, but the estate was massive plain which was a highlight for me. I'm from South Korea and 70% of Korean territory consists of mountains, so I was stunned by the large plain. Though it started to rain, it made people to go inside the house or the farm so that I could enjoy the peace and calm all by myself, making my experience much more epic. Since I had only 2 hours, I had to stop walking and rush to the farm and the house.
The website said that there are rare and endangered animals so I thought I could see animals that are hard to see in our daily life. But there were pigs, chickens, goats in the farm. Maybe the species are rare.
The house was really big. I can't imagine that it was owned by one family. There are so many rooms that I couldn't even count. Also, the walls in the house are all covered with realistic paintings.
It's a nice place to visit even if you don't live in Leeds. Give it a try!

The house was way much bigger than I expected and it took more than 40 minutes to see it. Farm and garden were also huge. I recommend planning at least 3 hours to look around here.
The day I went was rainy so it was really hard to walk around Temple Newsam. Please check the weather before you go.
There is a cafe inside of that, and I tried to eat a toasted tea cake at the cafe, but it ran out at 4pm. If you wanna try a tea cake, just go there earlier.

There is delicious ice-cream, huge green landscape and gorgeous building. If you go here, you should eat cloted cream ice cream.
But It is better to get TLC. The weather was bad so I couldn't enjoy enough.

The garden and grassland were beautiful. they are very huge, so you can feel
refreshed just strolling there. and dont forget to eat Yorkshiere ice cream.
In the house, there are lot of luxurious ceramics and paintings. you can also get information about the house and its history.

Can you still gain access to the disabled carpark right next to the house (the small car park area next to some of the House doors)? How do you gain access? The gate is always closed. Is it free to park in the House carpark with a disabled blue badge? I am not referring to the other carparks near the running track or Go Ape.
