We came to see the stone circle and had a mild interest in the village as well. We arrived on Saturday, May 27, 2023 about 9AM. The pay parking lot had quite a few cars in it. We walked what we could of the circle but it bisected by the roads into four pieces like a pie. We walked around the village with some interesting buildings, but most all were closed with the Red Lion Hotel an exception. From what we could tell, it looks like a highly commercialized tourist destination. After an hour or so, we left because nothing would be open for another hour or two.

Even without the stone circle and manor, Avebury is a lovely English village to visit. Parking is at the NT car park but this can get full so it is best to arrive early if the weather is good. Within the area of the village there is the stone circle, Avebury Manor and the Alexander Keiller Museum to visit.
The village was apparently largely built from the original stones of the circle that were broken up and used as building materials, obviously not good. Despite the cultural vandalism it is a very pretty village to wander around and every corner you take or alleyway you pop out of seems to give a different view of the stones themselves.
The NT Circles cafe was great too, lovely staff and a good food selection. By lunchtime it was packed. Avebury Manor is also timed entrances so get there early to avoid having to wait.

Nice village at the centre of impressive area for prehistoric sites galore. Great as a base, and good to have a break at the NT café.

Avebury is a Neolithic henge monument containing three stone circles, around the village of Avebury in Wiltshire, in southwest England. One of the best known prehistoric sites in Britain, it contains the largest megalithic stone circle in the world. We visited earlier in the week and particularly enjoyed the museum and the little tea room close by.
The stones are free and combined with visits to Lacock and Castle Combe, the beautiful trio of villages make a great day out.
There is also a good pub in the village as well as a moderate sized car park.
Well worth a look if you're into your stones.
