An incredible avenue that went all the way to Avebury, stones on either side of the track made for a pleasant walk from toe here we parked to centre of a wonderful hidden gem

West Kennet Avenue is the route to Avebury Stones, park here for free and make the walk into Avebury and back to admire an ancient walk way

This is a few steps away from Avebury so you can see a number of historical 'Wonders' in one day. Well worth getting on your walking boots and exploring the area

This avenue of stones which runs alongside the B4003 road for a short while makes for a great walk from the small lay-by into Avebury itself. It's not that strenuous of a walk and it's well worth doing it if you've visited the stone circle in the village.

Another must see around Avebury. It's a line of large stones leading to Avebury stone circle and probably best approached by starting at the far end and walking uphill to the stone circle and village, although I did it the other way and still enjoyed it. A place to get your imagination working overload.

Lots of stones. In two rows. Handy to walk down on the way to the circle or for GCSE photo projects on a Misty morning.

Often overlooked compared to the more famous stone circles, the avenue runs parallel to the B-road connecting the A4 to Avebury village It helps give a feeling for the scale of the prehistoric works here - two lines of stones extended up a slight hill. There's limited parking .on the road by the bottom (south) entrance.

This leads off from the Stone Circle at Avebury into the distant landscape that, apparently, was once covered in other sacred sites too. Where the original stones have gone - perhaps to be broken down for local housing - there have been concrete posts put into the holes that have been found along the route.

Some of the large original stones still stand and give you an impression of what it would look like originally. It's only part of its original length, it used to carry on to The Sanctuary

Who knows why this was designed and built but it must have been of significance to those who did it. This i part of the Avebury World Heritage site and well worth exploring by foot.

I had a choice: Avebury or Stonehenge. I choice the former and I am very glad I did. You have no doubt about the power of place when you visit. The standing stones loom around you, on both sides, leading you in a processional path along. They dwarf you as you stand besides them for, unlike at Stonehenge, these stones, a part of the village, are there for all to see and touch.

The ancient past pervades the space. One wonders who built them and why but know they are a connection to the Olde Gods and the people who raised these monstrous slabs towards the Heavens. The sheep graze around them. Tourists wander to and fro and those in the village go on with their lives, attending church, working in the pubs and museum and hedgewitch shops that thrive on the visitors' trade and heading off to their jobs elsewhere knowing the stones will be there long after they themselves have gone.

My only regret was we could not stay longer. We were part of a Rabbies day trip. Next time, I want to return and walk from there to that other venerable but not as old stone site - Stonehenge.
