I'm confining this review to the walk along the promenade at the northernmost end from the foot of the cliff railway to the start of the widened part. Didn't go anywhere near the pier and amusements (mercifully)>

It was near high water so nothing much to see on the seaward side except the large sea defences made from boulders. Plenty of shingle washed up onto the promenade that suggests it needs more frequent attention. No storms for some time now.

Main feeling was that it was somewhat jaded. The great-looking buildings, many grade II listed, that now house students have been horribly abused with different colour paint and butchered entrances. Windows, still with the original timber double hung sashes were really dirty and the paint was in very poor condition.

It's pretty clear that nobody actually cares about the architectural merit and fabric of the place so long as the tills continue to ring up the money. I don't know if the University College of Aberystwyth (or whatever they've rebranded it as today) owns any of these premises but if they do, shame on you. The same goes for the paces in private ownership.

I not that another review refers to poo. My experience of the whole of cardigan bay is that there's little or no restriction on dogs at all even in August. Pretty poor.

Local parking is expensive.

So impressed with how clean the beaches and the paths are. Lots of choices of places to eat, arcades, lots of benches to rest, eat, or dry your feet!

First time visiting Aberystwyth and very disappointed. Very shabby and rundown. Boarded up tatty premises, graffiti, litter and a grey miserable looking beach. What looked like a huge ecclesiastical building (college?) was being renovated so there were metal railings on a long stretch and machinery behind it. Dare say it’ll look good when it’s finished but it’s not exactly a tourist attraction.
There just didn’t seem to be anything to do apart from sitting around drinking and snacking. Some people were just sitting on walls drinking beer and eating takeaway food. Depressing and low rent.

Our stroll along the north promenade and beach on a sunny evening was surprisingly pleasant and relaxing. The beach was clean, there were swimmers and groups of locals relaxing in the warm sun. The presence of one or two bars with pavement seating combined with the seafront student accommodation indicate that this area could be lively in term times!

On a lovely day, the sea front is really pretty. It’s a pebbly beach, but the water is so blue and inviting. The bay curves round so it offers some protection from the wind. Lots of council workers out cleaning and picking up litter which was great to see. Very clean and tidy. Nice place to spend the day.

Stayed in a hotel on the sea front so enjoyed watching the comings and goings along the promenade. Walked along prom a few times during short stay. Very relaxing.

Visited Aberystwyth over the May Day bank holiday weekend 2022.

Stayed in a rather nicely positioned self catering apartment a converted Victorian hotel directly opposite the seafront. Apartment was well furnished and incredibly comfortable for the two of us. We enjoyed evenings sitting in the bay window looking out onto the seafront and watching the tide come in.

Aberystwyth boasts a fine restaurant and we made use of this with an excellent meal on the Sunday. The rest of our holiday was spent walking along the front and admiring the view we had a relaxing time and this was what we were looking forward to.

I was however a little disappointed with Aberystwyth itself and the surrounding environs. I have to ask this - are the city burghers, whether councillors or businessmen and women really interested in attracting tourists to the town? Or or so it appears, are they happy for students to take priority?

There was actually very little to attract the seafront to the visitor and quite a few problems with the infrastructure on the promenade itself.

Let’s go for a walk. Starting off our journey at the north end of the promenade the footway is covered with lose pebbles and gravel from the sea. Quite off putting and quite dangerous for someone with a disability. It is obvious that this “scree” had been there a while. A local told me she thought that the promenade had in fact not been swept properly since the storms of 2017 - she maybe right. One would think a nice little job for a mini road sweeper before the season started. But no!

Moving on walking south we notice former hotels that have now been converted into student accommodation.

It is actually quite refreshing to see that these buildings have been restored to their former look before coats of paint were added to the stonework.

I actually feel the developers have done a good job with these, however, it is student accommodation no longer hotels. The result is that the windows inside buildings are now piled up with the clutter of student belongings (fair enough we have all been there) but it doesn’t help the view from the promenade when you look up and see all sorts of things hanging from the window on what could be a beautiful facade of a Victorian frontage.

We note that many buildings are now converted to student accommodation perhaps this is the future rather than tourism however those hotels that were still open or beginning to look a little jaded result of being search surrounded by student accommodation.

Moving down the promenade we come across a shelter the weekend that we were there this shelter was being refurbished? It was surrounded by scaffolding and completely inaccessible.

The observer would think that this has been like this for a very long period of time indications including the amount of pizza boxes blown up against the wall and the scaffolding barriers that look as needing attention. I can’t understand why this installation wasn’t fixed and repaired prior to the tourist season starting it seems ridiculous to me.

Near this stricture we noted brick built planters built into the infrastructure bereft of all but weeds - not a pretty sight.

The rest of our walk was pretty samey- railing that need paint, no floral displays and a couple of coffee cabins and the pier - all pretty standard seaside stuff - but most of it and I’m sorry to say this - looks shabby!

As for the kids - yes there is the beach and a very boring sand pit and a nice playground out of sight behind the castle but (and this was a bank holiday weekend) no street performers, jugglers, singers or entertainers. I don’t know if buskers are banned but no welsh singers or entertainers at all. All that appeared to be on was a jewellery sale in the domed centre - is this really worth driving to the coast for?
No theatre shows - no theatre.

We thought the cinema museum was good but was only found by accident as no signs directed us there.

Information boards - these look tired and dirty and a number of information “points” along the promenade were simply faded boards in the wind. We noticed one information board with the dog/beach rules that no one seemed to follow on May 1st and 2nd without enforcement and would put some parents off letting their child play in the sand.

This is no longer a good tourist destination. The authorities have to decide fairly soon to tidy up polish up and liven up or else become a tourist backwater and already overtaken by Llandudno and Conwy.
