A beautiful bridge that takes you from the Welsh mainland over into Anglesey. It's a work of art and old Robert Stephenson surpassed himself in the design. Driving over it or even viewing it from a distance is a joy. A splendid bridge in a quite magnificent part of the world.

We wanted to go to the town with the long name and then had to visit the bridge over the Menai Strait. That's the wide stretch of water between mainland Wales and the island part. When we got there we saw this beautiful bridge that was started in 1846 and completed four years later in 1850. We drove through those beautiful tubes and had no idea that a train could also run under the road surface.

Saturday 23rd July and we drove across this iconic bridge on our way to Holyhead.
It spans across the Menai Strait for 460.32 metres (1,510.25 feet) and is 31 metres (103 feet above the water). It links the Island of Anglesey to mainland Wales. It carriers both road and rail traffic across the Strait.
The bridge was designed by railway engineer Robert Stephenson. It's construction began in 1846 and then opened in 1850.
It has three masonry towers which support the bridge's four spans across the Strait. The middle tower, which stands on Britannia Rock, is the tallest at 67.44 metres (221.25 feet).
While driving across the Bridge, and through the towers, we got fleeting glances of the Strait above the side barrier.
Back in May 1970, disaster struck and the bridge was very badly damaged by fire. This was caused by boys playing with lighted torches inside the structure. Following the fire it was unsafe to use and subsequently closed. It was rebuilt and restored and reopened to rail traffic in 1974 and road traffic in 1980.

We have driven over the bridge by car and train it’s a stunning piece of art .
The Menai suspension bridge as it is known can also be viewed from the banks of the Menai straits looking up.
It’s a bit of a trek but well worth it.

The Britannia Bridge is an Impressive entrance to Anglesey across the Menai Straights.
The newer of the two bridges, and main route in, it gets quite busy.
Nice viewing point on the road nearby.

I saw the bridge from various angles as part of a guided walk along the Anglesey coastal path from Menai Straits to Llanfair PG. It's an impressive structure that was originally just a rail bridge but after it was damaged by fire it was partly rebuilt and the road added on top.
What I was fascinated about was the stone lions that sit at each end of the bridge - only visible to those on the train (if you know where to look) or those walking. We viewed the two lions from the Anglesey side via a walkway accessed from a path down from St Mary's Church in Llanfair PG. One of the lions is easy to see from the path, the other is partly obscured by the bridge structure...but they are magnificent - I had no idea they were down there...the Lions of Britannia Bridge!
It's worth a look if you are in the area or walking the coastal path. There is a car park at the church for those driving there.

As you cross the bridge turn right and there's a pull in, park there and follow the path for a lovely short walk to right under the bridge Lovely little bridge some nice walks in area

Very neat and different looking bridge and character then others. It was nice to view from a lookout point on the North Shore on the A5 located between both bridges. We detoured from our trip just to drive the loop across one bridge and back on the other to see them both. It would be worth the trip across the channel not just for bridges but Beaumaris castle.
From the lookout you can see the islands in the channel, one which has a structure on it which I was very curious about.

We went today to see the lions of Britannia Bridge. From the car park at St Mary's Church in Llanfair PG it is a short walk to get to the lions but unfortunately the right hand side one is behind a high steel fence so you can only glimpse it, and Network Rail have fenced off the access for the left hand side one. You can still get a photo from the path, if you have a decent zoom lens.
We went because it has been on my list of things to do, and it's worth a look if you are in the area, as the lions are magnificent. But it's not worth going out of your way for as you won't want more than 5 minutes there.

This provides one of the main access roads to Anglesey. It is an impressive structure and there are superb views of the Menai Straits from it

Is the walk to see the lions from the Anglesey side suitable for children? 9 and 6 years?

Yes they would love it . It could be very muddy so wellingtons or old trainers would be ideal. You might still get some blackberries so take a bag
