We were a group of 4, one youngster and 3 over sixties. Our guides, Ian and Andy, were brilliant - knowledgeable and patient. Never been in a slate mine before and it was fascinating. The "adventure " itself - Hero Extreme - was just the right level of peril for our group, with zips and an abseil. The climbs were a challenge but we were well guided and quicklgained confidence. It felt like a good workout but all achievable. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes a bit of adrenaline and a physical challenge.

Four friends and I did the full-day Xtreme Underground Adventure. It was terrific - nerve-shredding and exhilarating.
The route included varied challenges - scrambling across cliffs, ascending vertical ladders, plenty of zip-wiring into grand caverns.
Learning about the slate mines and seeing original artefacts was fascinating, an added bonus.
Unlike some adventures that don't live up to expectations, this one absolutely did. Worth the time and money. Our instructors Ollie and Aiden kept us safe while ensuring we had a brilliant, immersive experience.

We had a fabulous day doing the Hero Extreme. Just the right balance between scary and safe. Often difficult, but never impossible. Still aching two days later. Ian and Andy, our expert guides were terrific. As well as keeping us safe, they told us about the history of the mines and how all the old machinery worked. Excellent value. Highly recommended.

What an amazing day from start to finish, we met 9:30 at the falls cafe and got our equipment, from there the only way was up(and down) the whole experience was amazing. I realised how unfit I was on the walk to the cave entrance but that’s just the start of the adventure. This is a 10/10 day my son was soooo happy and never stopped asking questions. Our guide was Aidan the lad was a top professional and his knowledge of the caves, types of rocks and the history of the mines kept you hooked. There was loads of adventure and the walk back from the mine was beautiful, the old ruins and quarry’s make your imagination go wild, highly recommend this place I will go again and thanks Aidan you were a super star the way you were with Brodii

My partner and I went on the Ultimate Extreme trip and had an absolutely fantastic time. We were fortunate to be part of a small group and our guides Aidan and Leigh delivered a fantastic tour that did everything promised and more. Aidan and Leigh were incredibly experienced, competent and reassuring and were able to offer some great information and insight on the mine and its rich history and took all of our questions in their stride. Due to our smaller group we were able to move quickly through, taking the opportunity to move further through the mines and take our time to explore. We were kitted up and taught the ropes (literally) with our guides keeping us in the right at all times and despite the fear factor of many of the obstacles we felt undoubtedly safe. In all the tour was just under 7hours and we enjoyed every second of it. If you are adventurous, willing to get a bit wet and muddy and don’t mind the dark then this is an amazing trip that we couldn’t recommend more! Thank you Aidan and Leigh!

My partner and I had such a good time at the Ultimate Xtreme, and made memories we’ll cherish forever! The views of the caverns below the traverses were breathtaking and it was incredible to see the little pieces of history left behind by the slate miners.
Ian and Jeanine were excellent guides. I’m quite an anxious person, and there were many points where my hands became shaky, or I couldn’t quite find my footing, but both of them were patient and understanding, giving me pointers and literally reaching out to give me a hand. I don’t think I could’ve completed the entire thing (and the big drop) if not for their words of encouragement and cheese-related jokes!
I’d highly recommend this adventure to anyone who wants to push themselves physically and emotionally, enjoys history and/or just loves a good thrill.

Brilliant day out, very enjoyable activities! Ron & Kirsty were amazing guides, lots of information about the history of the mines and made us feel safe during activities!
Would advise people to bring waterproof trousers, a pack lunch and some warm clothes. Walk up to the mine was quite difficult, all up hill and very muddy. But the rest was adrenaline rushing and good fun.
Would recommend.

We visited Go Below slate mine in Wales to do the Ultimate Extreme on a Saturday, we arrived at 08:30 and parked at the train station. Our guides for the day were Olly and Aiden, and they were already there waiting for us. We took a brisk walk up to the kit room where we were supplied with helmets, harnesses and wellies then it was off in to the mine we went. We had a quick go of using the safety gear and cows tails on a practice wall then went straight on to the first obstacle which was a traverse around a wall with a shear drop below you. Certainly an eye opener if you think you’re just going to bimble around a mine. The shear height and scale of the mines are amazing, the zip lines and climbs and descents are brilliant. Definitely an achievement to get it all done especially the jump at the end of the day. Olly and Aiden are a credit to the go below team, both these guys are really well trained and there knowledge of the mine and its history are first class. We took a lot of video footage, but only posted snippets on social media as I don’t want to give it all away. There are some really good surprises in store for you if you visit this mine. We’re going back in September and really hope to see Olly and Aiden again, we had a top laugh but yes you do need to focus and get your serious head on at times. 😂😂👍🏻

My two 21 yr old sons and I had a great day out yesterday with the full day xtreme challenge in the slate mine. Johnny and Aidan were brilliant guides, gave our small group confidence with the use of the safety equipment so we could tackle the perilous trail and trust in all that we did! The size of the caverns were quite something and the twists and turns, ups and downs all offered different challenges from climbing, balancing, zip lining, avoiding water and the sting in the tail free fall drop into the abyss! Jonny did make it look easier than it was and Aidan added a fascinating insight into both the history and geology of the mine. I would recommend this to anyone looking for adventure.

Coming in from the States (Portland Oregon actually) what’s the best airport to fly in to, and are there any train/busses/shuttles? Or will I need to get a car? Any suggestions would be great!

I would say Manchester Airport is the best to fly into. You will definitely need to hire a car as it’s in the snowdon area of North Wales. You will want to explore the area and hike a bit.

Hi, The Challenge trip involves an outside walk of around 20 minutes from the vehicles to the mine entrance which is hidden up in the woods. This is mainly uphill and steep in places. After exiting the mine there is a steep walk downhill which takes around half an hour. While underground you're on foot too so its a good 4 to 5 hours of physical activity. Hope this helps.

Due to the nature of our trips, the minimum age we can accommodate is 10 years. This is on our Go Below Challenge trip. Our Hero Xtreme trip is suitable for ages 14 and above and our Ultimate Xtreme trip is only available for adults 18 and above.

Whats the best clothes to wear do you need gloves or are they given?

Wear warm waterproof clothes, and ones you don’t mind getting dirty (this may or may not happen but just in case). You do get quite wet for parts of it! If you have waterproof gloves bring them, otherwise you can buy gardening type gloves when you get there from reception for only a few pounds - that’s what we did and they did the job!

Hi DCBA3, Thank you for your message. 12 noon is the time we meet so there's no need to arrive much before this. 10 minutes or so is fine. We do have a lovely cafe serving breakfasts and lunches so do feel free to arrive earlier if you would like to eat first. :-)

Is this suitable for elderly? My mother is 55 years old and she enjoys walking but not really intense/heavy work out.

Hi Mariam,
Thanks for your question. As long as your mother is able to be on the go for a good few hours then she'll be fine. We do not require any previous experience and there are plenty of rests and stops along the way.
Anything she doesn't fancy she can bypass.

Thanks for your question, RBrunning has pretty much answered your question for me (thank you) but yes we do provide wellies as they are better equipped to deal with the wet slate.
It's around 10 degrees in the mine all year so please dress accordingly.
We also recommend you bring food and drink to keep you going, if you do please bring a rucksack so your hands are free at all times!

What is the difference between the Extreme challenge and the Ultimate Extreme challenge? Is there anything the ultimate extreme has that the normal extreme doesn't?

Hi Becki,
Thanks for your question.
Both the Xtreme trips take part in the world's largest abandoned slate mine, however they do take on different routes.
There will be plenty of climbing, abseiling and traversing in both but the Ultimate Xtreme features more zip lines including the worlds longest and deepest underground zipline and also the worlds first 70ft freefall.
The Xtreme will take you to the lowest accessible point in the UK some 1300ft under solid rock as well as exploring the mine and it's ancient artefacts.
The Xtreme trip will last approximately 6 hours and the Ultimate Xtreme approximately 7 hours.
