This was a unique experience that I wouldn't hesitate in recommending. The scenery is stunning and the horses are "bombproof". Ellesmere Riding Centre has a nice relaxed feel to it with the people (and chickens) there being friendly. The ride was well paced, varied to suit the terrain. There were some great steep inclines and descents. There was some riding on the road (at the start and end of the ride) which I am not normally fond of, but I really found it interesting riding through the village with local drivers clearly used to behaving appropriately around horses. It was a true back to nature experience with a picnic under some trees as a break. Loved having the saddle bags. There were 4 of us plus Zoe our helpful guide. We were fortunate to have 2 ladies with us who were both good company and good riders. We were out for over 5 hours, but it didn't feel that long, and left there feeling happy and content. Well worth the drive from Birmingham.

Fantastic riding experience for novice riders, supported to feel comfortable and what Fantastic staff and horses. The views were tremendous. Thank you for the most amazing 3 hours

Wow!! I booked onto the riding weekend break with my 15 year old daughter and Ellesmere Riding and Trekking Centre did not disappoint. We stayed at a lovely B&B in Felinfach (The Old Mill) where we had 2 lovely sleeps before heading out on Saturday and Sunday mornings for the full day rides. We had Rosie and Monty on the Saturday and then Roxy and Rosie on Sunday. They were all absolutely amazing horses, who knew their stuff! They are tremendously sure-footed over some pretty steep climbs and gave us plenty of fantastic and thrilling canters. Saturday's ride was lead by Casey, who was really lovely. She also took us for the first part of Sunday's ride, which Myfanwy then took over just before lunch. This weekend was the most fun I've had on a horse in a long time. What an absolute gem of a place. The scenery on the Black Mountains is breathtaking.
Myfanwy's horses and ponies are very well cared for, fit and careful. We went up a very steep incline on Sunday and at no point did we feel nervous or that the horses were being asked to do something that was beyond their capabilities.
If you are looking for an unforgettable ride, whether you are a beginner or would like something a bit more speedy, PLEASE book a ride with Ellesmere - you will not be disappointed. We will be coming back!

Very welcoming friendly yard with amazing horses. All very well looked after. I went on a half day hack with my pony mad daughter. Who rides a lot, I haven't ridden for at least a year (very rusty) and have 0 confidence. They looked after us so well and kept checking in on me. I came back from the ride with the biggest smile after riding jessie. She was a lovely mere. Didn't put a foot wrong. Lots of go but safe and sensible with good breaks. The views were breathtaking and I fell back in love with horse riding. Very reasonable prices for such a lovely experience. Would 100% recommend.

Brilliant two days riding on capable and forward going horses.
Plenty of long canters along tracks across the hillside and through fields.
Weather was varied from a sunny day to a rather bleak one but what is a bit of rain when you are having so much fun.
The horses were chosen to suit the rider and are well suited for this type of terrain.It is also a pleasure to see them so well looked after
I will be back!

When I rang the centre to book for my daughter, the lady was driving. Arrived on the day to be told there was no record of the booking & we could come back tomorrow. Due to the weather forecast being terrible we went elsewhere.

Great experience. We went for 2 and half hour hacking over the hills. The place and the view was astonished! The lady was really welcome and good guide. Not just walking experience, so it satisfied completely our expectations. Really recommend it!

I had a good ride as someone with previous experience riding, my horse was well matched to my abilities. On the other hand, my partner who is a complete beginner, has never sat on a horse (you could clearly see he was nervous) was matched with a horse who was definitely not suitable for beginners to treck. Hos horse tried to kick any horse which came remotely near at least 5 times throughout the treck (also biting the other horses a number of times). This of course made him feel very nervous and unbalanced him a number of times and should absolutely not have been given to someone who has never ridden before, I must say this was very poor judgment of the staff. The leader could see how nervous he was but she probably only asked him twice in the whole of the two hours if he was ok and she did not reassure or comfort him but was rather occupied by her phone for the majority of the treck.
The route - We did the 2 hour treck, to get to the good views it consisted of walking down the lanes for approx 45 minutes. The views were nice and worth the treck! After the views, we were taken down a path with lots of low hanging branches which as an experienced rider were not a problem, but for a beginner I don’t think this was a friendly route.
Overall, for a novice to experienced rider I would recommend as I had a good ride, despite being nervous for my partner. If you are looking for a treck for a beginner, I don’t think the route or the horses were a great combination (of course not speaking for all of the horses, I’m sure some are good for beginners but my partner certainly wasn’t well matched). You would expect a plodder for someone who has never ridden before…
The leader and owner were both friendly, you can’t fault that but perhaps more interaction and reassurance to those who hadn’t ridden before would’ve made a great difference to build confidence and certainly not to put them on a horse who kicks out every 10 minutes.

An extremely enjoyable two hour hack which restored my confidence, being a retiree and not having ridden for a couple of years.
My new equine friend Rosie was a comfortable ride who seemed to enjoy a canter as much as I did.
Thank you to Tina who led the ride and was very encouraging.
I'm so pleased to be "back in the saddle" and look forward to riding at Ellesmere again soon.

I booked the day ride with a friend, we are both experienced riders and we're given lovely fit, forward horses to ride. We had the most amazing day in the mountains, with lots of long grassy canters and incredible views. Myfanwy took us out and she was so lovely and told us lovely stories about the area. Would definitely recommend, it's rare to find a place that can truly cater for both novice and experienced riders who want to go faster. The horses are all so well behaved and well cared for too. Will be back!
