Stunningly beautiful area. Landscape is beautiful and lots of lovely walks and hiking trails throughout. Popular with bikers too, if you are up for a challenge.

From Ott car park, follow the Yellow trail/Upper path. Do not follow the lower path as it will lead you to a bog and path itself is the Shimna river. I can say that its a moderate walk as it can be tough ascending the summits. Slieve Meelbeg is the highest among the 3. The views on the sunmits are lovely especially on a clear day. You can overlook Dundrum Bay, Silent Valley reservoir, Spelga Dam, Lough Shannagh and the summits of the Mourne mountain such as Slieve Bearnagh and Binnian. Ensure you wear proper gear and equipments when hiking. You can watch a video of our journey on the link on my profile.

We have so far walked up to Hares Gap and to the peak of Slieve Binnian and Slieve Croob. The scenery is breathtaking. You just can’t beat it! It can be a challenging walk up Binnian with some scrabbling over boulders at times but so worth it! The car park for Binnian gets full very quickly but the small camp site a little further allows you to park there for £3.

Please beware of the legend of the One Shoed Man. Apparently he lost his shoe in a terrible fire in the forest at Slieve Donard and he roams the woods at night. Legend has it that if you say his name 3 times into a mirror he will come and take your shoe! Some say he is destined to live out his days in the mountains until he steals a shoe and the curse can be lifted, others say he is stuck in a continuous loop of shoe stealing and it catches fire that very night, almost like a purgatory of shoe combustion. Either way, it is a terrible fate.

Have fun !

We looked to park at the Carrick Little Car Park but underestimated how busy it was, that’s our mistake. Anyways all around the fields were being made into makeshift car parks by the locals, we parked in one for £3.
Parking near to Carrick Little Car Park our plan was to head up the trail to Blue Lough (it’s very simple, just follow the track ahead up the mountain).
On walking up the track we found a little cafe so we stopped for a drink & a bite to eat, of course used the toilet & then headed on up.
My wife & I aren’t hikers but enjoy a walk, supposedly this trail is a gentle gradient but I would say it’s not what I would describe as gentle. Still it was a simple walk, just follow the track. The views were stunning, such a beautiful place.
Only issue is that due to other commitments we had to turn around after an hour of walking. We reached the small lake before the Blue Lough. This means we will be back in the future to finish off the walk.

I'm not a hiker but I love driving through the Mournes. There are amazing stone walls everywhere and fields of sheep. My favourite loops is from Rostrevor, up past Spelga Dam and around to Dundrum then either back that way or along the coast. This area is a gem. So many great places to explore and exceptional scenery. Loads to enjoy even for the less active types although i gather the hiking is incredible too.

Started at the car park walked along the river up to the Mourne wall them follow it to the top of Slieve Donard. Was foggy so didn't see much but was well worth the climb. As expected rocky and slippery in places so good footwear and clothing is a must.

What is the easiest walk in the Mournes for beginners please?

There is a fairly easy walk up to Cloughmor (the Big Stone) in Rostrevor. You start right next to Kilbroney park- either walking up from the rangers hut on your right as you drive up towards the main carpark or you drive to the top carkpark and walk from there. There are incredible views out over Carlingford Lough and plenty of trails if you want to continue walking.
I'd like to go to the Mourne Mountains from Belfast, is there a cheap way to get there? (cheaper than the 60 euros cost I can find by bus or train) Like maybe a bus tour?

Public transport Buses to Newcastle from Belfast should be cheaper than £60. The Mournes lie there...start in Slieve Donard car park at end of town and there are many walks from there.

We drove in a standard car. The roads are narrow and there isn't always somewhere (that isn't a ditch) to pull into in order to allow others to pass.

I'd like to take a day trip to the Mourne mountains. Although I'd love to rent a car, I'm afraid to drive on the left. I can't walk further than a mile or so. Are there any small group day tours of the area?

You could go and stay at the Meelmore Lodge which is located near the Trassey car park and overlooks the beautiful Hare's Gap. A nice little walk with a bit of upward incline will take you onto the Brandy Pad which is the old smuggling path leading right through the Mournes. Once you hit the Pad just stay walking and on either side you will be transported by the magnificent scenery. The Meelmore lodge has self catering rooms and even a restaurant if you just want to relax. Enjoy.

I noticed a comment about litter in the Mournes and just wanted to say there is nothing annoys me more than people littering, especially in these stunning landscapes. I was in the Mournes at the weekend and during our walk filled a bag of aluminium cans, plastic bottles, glass bottles and food wrappers which I couldn't bear to leave lying. I went even further than that - washed the dirt off them and recycled what I could! I don't understand how anyone could be so disrespectful of these beautiful places to litter. As a local of NI I am embarrassed by the amount of litter in our countryside and will do my small part by lifting what I see when I am out and about to make it better and would urge others to do the same. If there are only a few imbeciles causing the problem, hopefully there are more of us who can counter it. So my question is, are there any organised clean-ups which people can take part in to help raise awareness and rectify the litter problem in the Mournes and across NI?

Sorry to hear your visit was marred by the behaviour of irresponsible walkers.I wonder what part of the Mournes you were in at the time.
Unfortunately your actions in lifting and disposal of the items is probably the way forward and hopefully club members who are reading will spread the word.
Good luck

I'm traveling with my 81 and 86 yr old parents so hiking is out. We hope travel up from Dublin airport and stay in the Mournes at a BnB on our way to the Glens of Antrim. Need recommendations for a BnB and ideas on the best things to see in a day and a half.

Like the previous answer, I would try tourist board for accommodation particularly with elderly parents. There is a really nice drive round by Spelga Dam, if your parents can't hike, the views are spectacular especially if the weather is good. Plenty of places to eat in Newcastle, Nikki's is very good and lots of parking beside it. You could also drive around the Glens from Cushendall to Cushendun and up over Torr Head and on to Ballycastle, try Thyme Café there also, great food. From Ballycastle you could go towards Portrush taking in Whitepark Bay, the Giants Causeway and Bushmills and Portballintrae, again beautiful views of Rathlin and surrounding area.
