Famous for being Castle Aaargh in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, this is a must see for true Python fans. We had been here before but this time we were lucky enough to be booked onto a tour, so we could go one better than King Arthur and gain entrance to the sacred castle! Sadly you don't cross Loch Linnhe in a Viking longship and the French knights are no longer in residence but it still felt incredible to be there. Crossing the loch is very hard if you get seasick like me, but I'm very glad I made it there and back! I won't spoil it by saying anything about the tour itself, other than it was absolutely fascinating, you get more than your money's worth and you do get to see the whole castle. The owner Alistair really knows his clan history! You can take as many pictures as you like but videos aren't allowed as it's still a home. If you mention Monty Python you get to see an extra bit at the end. Seeing the castle from the shore is special but if you can book onto a tour, it's more than worth it! It was a truly unforgettable experience and one that I will treasure forever. Watching the film is even better after you've been to the locations and we've now done all those we can in Scotland.

This was number one on my list behind Doune Castle for our Scotland trip! We had beautiful weather and sadly they were not giving tours until May so a drive by would have to do. Note, you need to book well in advance for a tour but I’ve heard it’s amazing. Now, getting to the best vantage point is a bit tricky. First I would stop at Stalker View Cafe and grab a latte and enjoy their viewpoint. Then keep driving and hang a right at Gunnar’s Auto and find the Jubilee Bridge. Both will give you shots of Castle Aaargh! you’re looking for.

Short hike between lovers around Stalker Castle 🥾
The weather was unfortunately not favorable (rain and wind).
We thought this was accessible via a small bridge. We were therefore somewhat disappointed not to be able to get close to it.
An ultimately contrasting adventure.

Alistair enjoys showing off his castle. He is a wealth of knowledge about it's history, the history of the area, and much more! This is a wonderful chance to see something unique from most castles you might visit. Highly recommended for Monty Python fans or people that just enjoy hearing the story of a castle and it's place in local history.

Wegen der schönen Fotos wollten wir diese Burg gerne anschauen, aber fanden keinen wirklich geeigneten Parkplatz. Wir haben dann neben ein paar Mülltonnen am Ende einer kleinen Straße unten am See geparkt und hatten einen Ausblick aus der Ferne. Dieser ist schön, aber nicht so spektakulär wie gedacht.

We made the detour to Castle Stalker on our way from Fort William to Glen Coe. I believe is was 12 miles each way out of the way. I thought I’d was well worth it. Such an iconic view!

We zijn 6 maanden bezig geweest met de voorbereiding van onze trip naar de Highlands.
Ons bezoek aan Castle Stalker op 13/05 werd 3 maanden van tevoren geboekt en bevestigd.
Daags tevoren plots een telefoontje.
Owv. "technical issues with the boat" en het aankomende stormweer werd het bezoek zonder meer afgezegd.
Iedereen was al per mail verwittigd.
Niets aan te doen.
Onbegrijpelijk!
Op 13/05 zijn we toch maar eens tot daar gereden.
De boot lag gewoon op het water (zie foto), van stormweer geen sprake.
Onbegrijpelijk!
Ik denk dat de eigenaar er geen zin in had.
De Highlanders lopen niet over van ondernemingszin...
En voor een streek waar zo al weinig cultuur te beleven valt, en waar het in mei 5 dagen op 7 regent, is de annulatie van een kasteelbezoek een extra tegenvaller.

We have driven past Castle Stalker and enjoyed the magnificent and very photogenic view many times, so when we were organising a reunion of friends and were wondering where to take them, we thought that a tour of this fascinating castle, not just for its colourful history, but also it's links with Monty Python's Holy Grail (as Castle Aaaagghh, would be just up our street.
And so it proved. Nine of us made a short and delightful trip by boat over to the island with the owner Alasdair as our guide.
After we climbed up to the castle entrance we were shown inside and met by a display of Monty Python memorabilia. Alasdair who had been at the castle on the day of filming, and secured a part in the film, regaled us with stories about the day John Cleese, Graham Chapman and the rest of the team spent what must have been a hilarious day at the castle.
From there we climbed to the grand hall where Alasdair explained how his father had come to buy the castle and how its renovation had been undertaken, a real labour of love.
Eventually we climbed via the other floors to the ramparts with Alasdair explaining a little more about the history at each stage. The views over Lorne and Appin are spectacular.
All too soon we had to descend back to the boat and take the short trip back to the shore.
This has to be the best excursion we have been on in the area and all of us felt privileged to have had the opportunity to take it. Trips out to the Castle are limited and advance booking is essential, so plan and book well ahead. Check the website for availability.

Firstly the views from dry land are absolutely stunning. The tour? Well it involves a short boat trip (200-300m that's all) but it keeps your feet dry and it gives you a different perspective as you get closer and closer. After that, Alistair will keep you engrossed, and amused, for a good hour and a half (at least). Not the prettiest castle we have ever seen, by a long chalk, but most enjoyable just the same. All rooms are open to the public and tours are limited to 12 people at a time - one because that's all the boat will take plus the castle isn't that big. If you're in the area, do it if you can.
