Just started studying anatomy and this was a real treat. I enjoyed the varied types of content in the museum dating back to old anatomical relics to modern day exhibits you interact with.
Was great to finally use the medical language I am learning.
I feel like the walking tour is absolutely vital to the museum experience.

This visit had been recommended to us and we were not disappointed. It’s not a place for young children but is totally fascinating. We visited for hours longer than expected. We learned a lot.

Myself and my partner visited on a recent city break. I had seen the museum on a documentary presented by David Hayman several years ago, and thought it looked very interesting. I have to admit that the Burke & Hare curiosities were initially the main reason for our visit, but the museum has so much more to offer than that! I didn’t expect it to be so large and to contain so much. We found it fascinating learning about the history of surgery and seeing many of the actual tools and equipment used. Let’s just say I’m glad I live today and not in the 18th or 19th centuries! There are lots of specimens of human remains on display. Photography is not permitted, out of respect, which is fine. On a personal level I was fascinated to see the ‘loose bodies’ removed from knees, as I am hoping to get this operation done soon myself and it was interesting to see what they look like! Gift shop was small but had lots of fun things. All in all, a great visit!

Very interesting and lots to learn and see - the surgical robots were fascinating - not for the faint of heart though but worth seeing

A fascinating museum and collection, well displayed. The experience was all the more enjoyable due to the fact photography is prohibited (out of respect for the human remains on display) - it enables you to take the exhibit in without viewing most of it through the lens of your phone/camera.
One of the most enlightening museums in Edinburgh, and a surprisingly humbling experience too.

Unique experience. Endless displays of human body parts. Some interactive sections too. For anyone in the medical/science field it’s worth a visit.

Absolutely Fascinating!

My husband and I have been wanting to visit the museum for a while and it was worth the wait!!
This is an excellent museum. Easy to follow floor plan and excellent displays
Staff were super helpful from the admission and through the museum.

Wonderful time. The displays were as informative as they were shocking. I had a lovely time chitchatting with the staff, too.

Extremely fascinating. I am not in the medical field or a student but I was generally good at biology in school and find the topic quite interesting.
I was engrossed in the section that showed the history of surgery and how procedures were performed before anaesthesia.
Those who are interested in pathology would have a field day! There's so many organs to look at. My mum has type 1 diabetes and when I spotted a pancreas I joked at seeing her best friend stuck in a jar.
The museum isn't as interactive as other museums I have visited so therefore I wouldn't recommend it for small children.
Wasn't allowed to take pictures and you are warned because some people find the displays disturbing.
At the end of the visit I was asked to fill out a questionnaire. One of the questions was 'What is your nationality?'. White Scottish, Black Scottish, Mixed Scottish, White British, Black British... I like that Scottish was separate to British which made me chuckle.

Hello! You are able to visit the museum before and/or after the walking tour. Many visitors like to attend after the tour as they feel they have a better understanding for the stories that are told in the museum after the tour.

Hello! We don't have audio guides in the museum. We do have some interactive touch screens around the museum which offers translations in many languages, including French.

Hi there! We have male and female and accessible toilets located in our basement. Toilets are accessible by lift.

We are open 10am-5pm, 7 days a week.

We don't recommend the museum for children under the age of 10. However, this is just a guideline and is up to the parents discretion.
