Beautiful city, easy navigating while walking as castle great landmark. Plenty of dogs and no dog mess anywhere. Excellent food, and lively bars even in January.

On High Street, just at its beginning (coming from Lawnmarket, on the left) is this bronze statue placed on a stone pedestal and dedicated to one of the greatest philosophers of the 18th century (of course in this case Scottish). I have no information about the author or the date; in any case the statue seems well made despite being the character portrayed incongruously in the clothes of a philosopher of ancient Greece, rather than as they were dressed in the century of enlightenment. But I don't like the right toes, shiny and golden because the classic green patina of oxidation that normally covers bronze here is consumed by the continuous rubbing of the big toe by passers-by (because it seems to bring good luck; but it reminded me of those scenes from old movies where poor people took off their shoes and poked their toes out of broken socks) and I didn't like the traffic cone resting on his head (in my opinion very bad custom - which I also found in Glasgow - and perhaps even tolerated by the Authorities). It's easy around this statue to find someone in traditional Scottish dress playing bagpipes.

Beautiful statue, beautiful backdrop. People rub the toe of the statue for good luck. If you follow his eyes to the opposite corner, there's a brass H on the pavement marking the site of the last public execution in Edinburgh in 1864.

You can see it has gone a weird colour on his foot as people tickle it and it apparently gives them good luck. I'd rather stick with rubbing greyfriars Bobby nose.

A large set of shiny bronze toes protrude from the statue of the philosopher David Hume, on the corner of the Royal Mile and the mound.
As I walked up to it I pretended to tickle his toes saying "tickle, tickle" and a security guard in a door-way of the building behind spat his drink out laughing.
Funniest thing to happen today.

A large shiny bronze toe protrudes from the statue of the philosopher David Hume, on the corner of the Royal Mile and the mound. Belief of superstition tradition. Though he would be sorely tempted to give a kick in the head for the rub of toe, there's nothing that David Hume, one of the world's greatest rationalist philosophers, can do about it.

I have never heard of this gent but apparently a very famous Scottish philosopher. Not over impressed with the statue but in a great spot on the mile.

This statue is situated on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, outside the High Court on Lawnmarket. The statue of philosopher David Hume was completed in 1995 by sculptor Sandy Stoddart. A popular Edinburgh landmark, it shows Hume as an ancient Greek philosopher . If you linger a moment as you pass him you may notice passers-by rubbing the statue's foot. Touching toe of this 18th-century Scottish philosopher’s is supposed to get good fortune and something of Hume's own wisdom and insight. This statue catch an eye when you are on the Royal Mile.
