Nice welcome from staff. Informative exhibitions in the remaining roomso of this ruin. Panoramic view of Elgin from the roof....splral stairs up, quite challenging. Many carvings on show...fascinating.

Majestic remains of a large 13th century cathedral that, abandoned after the reform of 1560, fell inexorably into ruin. Today what remains (the two towers of the facade with the portal and the frame of the above window in the middle; some parts of the side flanks; the right apse and a good part of the central apse; the octagonal chapter house), without the roof and with a green lawn instead of the floor, is still imposing and with an intrinsic charm, probably due also to the attractive Gothic forms that dominate everything. On the towers of the facade (of the tower that was once in the center of the church there is nothing left, except three statues, two of which are partial) you can climb and on the left, with a not easy spiral staircase of 140 steps, you reach the top, where you have a beautiful 360-degree panorama, as well as an overall view of the perimeter of the entire cathedral; during the climb you pass in some rooms where there is a stone exhibition (mostly prototypes that once adorned the cathedral). Inside the Chapter Hall you can admire the splendid Gothic vault, full of images and carved symbolism. Scattered around the church several burials, both on the wall (in arcosols), both on the ground and as sarcophagi (especially in the right apse); around the church, then, the usual cemetery is inevitable. Paid visit: about ten pounds, no small thing, but for me who love the ancient ruins, it is definitely worth it.

This is an Impressive ruin. You have great view from the tower over the city. In the towers you find a well documented collection of masonry.

If you like ruins, especially cathedrals, you can't help but love this ruin. It is truly breathtaking - grand in scale even in its current state and replete with remnants of beautiful stone carvings that have been recovered and put on display. I was completely amazed learning the size of this structure before it had been destroyed. The caretaker/management has done a really nice job explaining the cathedral's history, construction, destruction, reconstruction, and more, giving you incredible insight into the life of this incredible edifice. It was a beautiful spring day when we visited, and views (and pictures) from the tops of the tower are magnificent! We spent a couple of hours here, but I could have stayed at least a couple more. Definitely worth the trip!

We have had the cathedral on our to do list for a couple of years and finally made it this week during lovely weather.
We were not disappointed, Easy to find, the staff gain the 5 stars themself, friendky and welcoming and so knowledgeable. We stayed after the visit chatty for a short while.
There are works on going but it doesnt spoil the visit.
Information boards all around. The site is amazing now so would of been outstanding back then.
Well worth the visit.

A great walk around this beautiful cathedral. The staff were informative and were walking around and able to answer any questions we had. Beautiful.

A magnificent cathedral, a true jewel whose visit is unmissable.
Stairs lead to the upper floor of the tower where there is a museum with some really interesting pieces.

An incomparable view of the tower platform! Not for those who are afraid of heights! Medieval tombs set with lawns and ruins form a beautiful ensemble to visit! A park right next door for parking

Beautiful old Cathedral. The displays in the two towers are really interesting. The views from the top are impressive too. If you can't make it up the stairs there's an interactive display to let you see all around too. We are interested in the meaning of the old gravestones and spoke to one of the guides who pointed us in the direction of another guide called Raymond. She told us 'if Raymond doesn't know its not worth knowing' and she was right. He was so helpful and even gave me a book with all the signs and symbols in it! Definitely worth a visit. Good parking too

When we arrived we were greeted by a very helpful, knowledgeable lady who outlined the history of the cathedral and things to look out for, such as the tallest gravestone and where to find remnants of paintings of angles.
The ruined abbey is very impressive. Large parts of it are still intact and you can walk up the two towers via stone spiral staircases. The information boards and exhibits are well presented and interesting. Not too 'dry'.
Some of the ruins are currently covered in scaffolding, but this did not spoil our visit as most areas were still accessible.

In the immediate vicinity of the cathedral there's ample on-street free parking. There's also free parking in the adjacent Cooper Park.

Hello. You do not need to book before visiting, but we do recommend that you check for closures before setting off. This can be done on our website, by calling the site or by checking #hsclosures on Twitter.
Regarding the Scottish Heritage Pass, Elgin Cathedral is included in the sites that you can visit with this. A booklet is provided with the Pass, either in paper form, or online. This will provide you with additional information on the sites that you can visit.
