We walked the Killiecrankie Gorge along the Garry River and enjoyed the time spent with nature. Start to finish the walk was approximately 1.5 miles. A famous battle occured in the gorge and is noted at several points. There is also a tall railroad stone arch bridge which is very impressive.

We walked from Pitlochry to Killiecrankie and luckily it was a beautiful day. It took 2 hours. The scenery was nice and the paths are quite well marked. The only disappointment was the lack of anything in Killiecrankie itself. There were so many signposts to it we thought there must be something but there isn’t even a shop. Just be prepared, which we were, and keep on walking.

A nice wander along the river from the visitor centre. Absolutely lovely autumn colours, we enjoyed watching the bungee jumpers jumping off the bridge!

This is an absolutely stunning trail you can explore for anything from 1-4 hours, depending on how far you wish to wander in the woods along the river.
The trail offers some stunning views and a picturesque viaduct to match.

Lovely National Trust for Scotland visit. Great walking paths amongst the trees but disappointed that we could not easily get to Craigower from the route that took us towards Faskally.

Visited the glen and the soldiers leap on a lovely summers day and this is a really nice walk through some nice woods with a strong river in the background. Very pleasant walk and the food in the cafe at the end is really good.

There is a fee to go and see this landmark that has not been signposted at all. Walk is good though.

As far as the scenery is concerned nothing much has changed since I first reviewed Killiecrankie on TA back in December 2010 and it is still one of the best places to admire Scotland’s autumnal glory if you get the timing right. On our most recent visit in early October the colours were good, however on previous trips they have been spectacular.

It is feasible to drive through on the A9 and admire this in the passing but so much better to divert onto the B8019 and B8079 to The National Trust Visitor Centre which overlooks Killiecrankie Pass. The Centre provides parking (free to members, £3 otherwise) and public toilets and there is now a leased café on site within the building which used to combine visitor information and refreshments. As a legacy of the old set up there are some interpretation boards on the walls however these cannot be comfortably viewed if people are sitting at a table in front of them, as they were at the time of our visit.

We found the café to be very good.

From the Centre there is access to trails which provide an overview of the Pass of Killiecrankie and extend down to the riverside and eventually along to the Linn of Tummel for those looking for a lengthy walk.

The terrain at the outset heads steeply downhill so it’s not suitable for the less able. If you are planning doing any length of walk, particularly in wet weather, I would recommend wearing hiking boots or trainers.

First port of call on the trail is the “Soldier’s Leap” which gives an opportunity to view from above the spot where a redcoat, retreating at the Battle of Killiecrankie (27 July 1689), leapt across the River Garry to escape his pursuers, the Jacobites. It has been measured as an 18 foot leap which when compared with the long jump Olympic record of just over 29 feet is perhaps feasible for someone running for their life! It is not a jump I would attempt myself but in the past we have scrambled down the hillside to try to get near to the spot. It is a rough, steep slope so probably best left for retreating redcoats.

The Klliecrankie area is closely associated with the battle which started with skirmishes in the Pass however the main action took place on the other side of the village in fields which nowadays are split by the A9 road. There are plans to make this road a duel carriageway which may controversially impact on the battleground site. The battle was a major one resulting in the loss of approximately 2500 men, with victory going to the outnumbered Jacobites who also lost their commander in the process - “Bonnie Dundee”. He is buried near Blair Castle at St Brides Kirk (a ruined church).

As we continued down the trail towards the suspension footbridge over the River Garry we came upon a marker which highlighted the burial place of another commander who was killed in the battle - Brigadier Barthold Balfour - who fought on the Redcoats side.

These markers aside, there isn’t much on display at Killiecrankie these days to learn about the battle and it would perhaps be worthwhile if the NTS put up a shelter of some description on the site with information for visitors. In the meantime you can always use Google - Historic Environment Scotland provide good information.

The suspension footbridge gives a good viewpoint. There is access from there to go along to the road bridge further up and climb the stairs to where there are even better views of the autumnal colours. For those less willing to walk there is a car park at the road bridge (signposted for Strathtummel). The bridge also hosts a bungee jump seasonally. In the past we have also used the car park at this bridge to visit Linn of Tummel by foot along the river, in the direction of Pitlochry, and that is worthwhile too.
