A wonderful cathedral ... not to be missed .. built in 1864 after demolishing the old church ... inside a Masonic plaque of the only woman admitted in 1712

What an entrance fee for a house of worship. €32 for a family of 4. In and out in 10 minutes. The outside is the most interesting

I love visiting a cathedral and seeing the architecture and the art - this one was brilliant. I arrived during a service so I had to wait a bit to get in but it was all clear by 12:30. It was seven euros, which was a bit steep if you’re not interested in cathedrals, but if you are it’s worth it!

Unfortunately we couldn't go inside as a tourist as the Sunday morning service was taking place.
Nevertheless we thoroughly enjoyed a look around the outside and the small but peaceful grounds. A must see if you are in Cork.

I confirm the previous opinion!!!
The price is unjustified!
Nothing more to add, just downright disappointed with the city of Cork which is completely oversold on the different sites…

€10 for family entry. It seems that almost all cathedrals in Ireland cost an entrance admission. The staff were very friendly and informative. Worth the short walk.

While built on a site that has had a Christian church for over a thousand years, the current one is a rebuild of another simpler cathedral that was demolished in 1864, to allow for the building of what now exists. While its architecture was deliberately built in a 14th century French Gothic style, it still exudes a modern undertone. Particularly highlighted in the fact that there is considerable emphasis given to those whose lives were lost during armed conflicts of the nineteenth and twentieth century.
One striking feature however is the mosaic flooring of the altar.

The history of the re-creation of this cathedral by a nearly blind architect is amazing. Get Stephen to give you the tour and you won't be sorry you stopped in.

Located in the "highest" part of Cork, it lets its canonical Anglophile neo-Gothic spirit breathe, with its steeply sloping spiers, its proverbial splays and its pointed arches; and the location - which still reveals that apartheid tendency that the English rulers tended to impose on the dominated Irish Catholics - of the building tells stories of a past of tribulations, of 800 years of ferocious colonialism.
The presence of many crosses emulating the symbols of Ireland (the Northern Cross, the Southern Cross and the Cross of the Scriptures) in the cemetery suggests that - despite the Anglican cult professed in the place - some wounds have been healed.
However, there is an extremely interesting fact: the building - like many other Catholics - is not available to tourists and is only open to the faithful: this tells of an attachment of this land to its own traditions (that is, you go to Church as faithful and not as photographers).
The ephemeral pleasure of the tourist [hit-and-run] evidently does not appeal to the Irish: seeing this place implies an effort - albeit temporary - to belong to a community, to its habits, to its culture and to its way of reasoning; a "de-globalizing" custom - applied in several other similar places - which I find sensible and capable of triggering some excellent anthropological reflections.
Putting ourselves in the shoes of local communities is the first real intercultural effort: after all, we are used to considering many artefacts as works of art (be it figurative arts, music, architecture or anything else), according to a de-contextualised idea , de-functionalized and deconstructed; but for a believer the Church is first and foremost a place of worship and not an artistic product.
So, reluctantly because I was only able to see the outside, but I share the spirit!

Pay €8 to visit a cathedral. For 4 people it’s €32 to appreciate the Gothic architecture. Even in France you don't pay to visit cathedrals 🥺

I said spend the time and the money at the time. In retrospect, I really don't think going in was worth 6 euros.
