I visited this cemetery to see the resting place of the Irish Victorian writer Sheridan Le Fanu. It is a well organised cemetery that is a place of reflection too.

Numerous famous Irish people have had their final passing marked here. The artist Jack Butler Yeats, father of W.B., playwright John Millington Synge, mathematician William Rowan Hamilton and prolific author Maeve Binchy, to refer to but a few.

Established in 1836 and initially solely for Protestants, it wasn't until the 1920s that Catholic burials were permitted.

It was thought-provoking to walk around the numerous pathways, seeing the eclectic assortment of tributes in stone to loved ones. Some are outstanding.

Three chapels are available for use. With its fine profile and ornate interior, the Victorian one is the most precious.

I love cemeteries and have been meaning to go to Mt Jerome for a long time as it is right on my doorstop. We passed it recently so decided to pop in for a stroll.

It is really beautiful and not really a typically Irish cemetery so it feels more continental. There is quite a variety of graves and headstones to explore and some really large family vaults. If you like graveyards, and are in the area - have a look!

I went to mount jerome today 27th april
I have wanted to go for a long time as i know it has a lot of history and reminds me of pere la chaise cemetary on paris. It was well worth a visit and especially the old graves and family crypts.

We went to Mount Jerome to visit the grave of my wife’s relatives. This is an old cemetery, but it is still in use. The history gives a glimpse into how the way has changed over the centuries and decades that the deceased are honoured and remembered. It is nice to remember ones relatives who are here, but also a feast for the eyes and one’s thoughts to see the different types of gravestones and other Memorial’s. It is also an interesting reminder of times when children and youth had their lives end much earlier than is common today.

This is an easy walk (a couple of km) from St. Stephen’s Green through interesting neighbourhoods and the cemetery itself could take an hour or two to explore. A perfect activity on a nice day.

The Gresham Vault In Mount Jerome Cemetery [ An Example Of Taphophobia]

If you do decide to visit Mount Jerome in Dublin you must find the Gresham Vault which once had a bell that connected into the vault. Apparently, the lady interred there was so fearful of being buried alive that the bell was installed so that she could ring for help in case if she discovered that she was not actually dead. I must admit that I would be surprised if anyone would have come to her assistance if she did in fact manage to ring the bell especially if they were due an inheritance.

This cemetery has been transformed from an old forbidding place of the dead. For years it lay dank and creepy, covered in weeds and closed. After many years of hard work and determination, the current owners have breathed new life and vibrancy into this historic cemetery. There are new grave sites in among the old and noted. You will not find a weed in the place and it is a fine place to visit the grave of a relative, or for a quiet walk among the tombstones.
And when you have spent an hour or two strolling the grounds, pop into the gorgeous traditional tea rooms for a top class tea or coffee and a scone or sandwich. A lovely way to spend an afternoon.
