Walked from Castlebar to the Museum in Turlough and had lunch there before walking back. Over 16 Km in total so a good walk. Some lovely and peaceful sections when away from the road.

This was such a pleasurable walk. My tip would be to drive out to the National Museum of country life, park up there and walk the greenway to Castlebar. We did this, stopping for a cup of tea in the town before doing the return journey. I guess you could do it either way, but we found this better.

We started this greenway in castlelebar at the claimed trailhead (per Mayo council website) at Lough Lannagh Holiday village. The trail start was very poorly signposted, when I say poorly I mean none, zero. To get from there to the proper start of the trail we had to follow signs painted on the ground by (we think) the bike shop - no official greenway signs. This “trail” took us through a park, two car parks, road works and a side ally (with no bike path for large parts). The locals didn’t seem to know it was greenway either we only found another group of cyclists who were equally lost but had a bike shop map so between us we got there.
The actual trail itself is very nice, and offers a nice change from the Westport greenway. There are some nice views and woodland area and the finish at the Turlough museum is a good spot for lunch (and with hind sight we should have started there).
Very good amenity such a pity that the trailhead per Mayo council isn’t the proper start. See picture of the trail head attached to this review

This is the most fabulous meandering greenway. For the most part it follows the journey of a river through the countryside from Castlebar to Turlough and exits at the Museum of Country Life. It is exceptional and used by walkers and cyclists alike. Worth the spin

Beautiful cycle through forest on this greenway lovely playground on the route as well as at The National Museum of Ireland – Country Life. We hired bikes from Bikes and Boards the lads there Fergus and Brian told us the route to go gave us lovely recommendations. It was a beautiful cycle we had our 3 year old in a trailor and she loved it. We'll definitely be back to do it again. Castlebar in general was spotlessly clean . Lovely to see x

We spent a lovely day on the Castlebar to Turlough Greenway.
With lots of parking it’s really convenient to start wjere we hired the bikes (Bikes & Boards) in Lough Lannagh Holiday Village with a Greenway into Castlebar town and then you follow the green arrows through the town and then back onto the greenway at the town park.
There’s a great playground at the town park and a wonderful one in the woods at Turlough.
Our 5 year old really enjoyed his first big cycle and our 3 year old loved being in her trailer.
The museum is well worth a visit but the playground and cafe were the star attractions for us it was the perfect day trip.

Very nice walkway. Would recommend going solo or with others. Will definetly do it again. Turlough is beautiful.

The cycle from Castlebar to Turlough museum is a must when visiting Castlebar. It is an easy ride (my 7 year old managed fine) through forest and rolling landscapes with the river running alongside the path most of the way(approximately 14km return).We hired bikes from the bike clinic, a friendly and efficient service. You can also lunch at the museum cafe, delicious food.

Fantastic scenery very quiet walk, met nice people .the people we meat were very friendly and spoke to mud aNd bade us the time of day. Met some people cycling but this was no problem plenty of room for everyone
