The cathedral was beautiful.
Please forgive my cynical thoughts, but whenever I enter a place of God's kingdom, where everyone is ONE under God. Then you look over and see that there is a black painted, 10/12 foot metal fence, that separates the "higher classes" from the lowly masses.

We were warmly welcomed into this cathedral which was largely rebuilt during the 18th century. It has some impressive iron work and contains the tomb of Bess of Hardwick.
It is worth a visit if you’re in Derby.

A lovely welcome when we arrived, we were greeted by a gentleman who told us where to start, he told us when the cathedral was built, he was a fountain of knowledge. Well worth a visit to such a beautiful place. It was free to go in, but a donation was made.

The second cathedral from our road trip back up north and very much worth a visit if you are in Derby. As far as cathedrals go, Derby is smaller than many such buildings and was the town's parish church up to 1927 when the see of Derby was created. It's very old with tombs dating back centuries including the final resting place of the amazing Bess of Hardwick Hall, dating back to Tudor times.
What struck me when I walked through the door was how light it was inside. The interior is very photogenic with a couple of modern stained glass windows. - the originals were destroyed during the Second World War.
We had a lovely welcome from the volunteers on duty who were more than happy to chat about the building.

Amazing place, long weekend visit and found this gem ! A total must see.
Although I am not religious it was amazing to see the architecture and how this lovely it is maintained.

Lovely lady sat at the front of the cathedral greeted us and gave my daughters the option to take information boards with them so they could have a good look around. Got chatting to her after our visit and about the resident cathedral birds and the history of the cathedral. She made extra time to chat and show us live web cam footage of the peregrine and chicks. We even got to spot them returning to the nest outside. She told us about the stained glass windows which aren’t the typical you would find in a cathedral. Very informative and friendly and lots of information available about the history of the cathedral. Great visit!

We left at the interval, as did many others.
Beatles by Candlelight. Feels like we were conned. Expectations were high due to the price - at £45 a ticket we thought ‘this must be good’
By candlelight - set an expectation of mood
Beatles - expectation of great songs/singing
Price was way too high for a mediocre performance, they sounded like pub singers
Candlelight- There weren’t enough candles to set the mood and ambiance
Beatles - Singing quality was not good enough.
It was a rip off on many levels. We saw Hans Zimmer concert at same venue a few months earlier and the was amazing. This Beatles one was a massive let down

Well I have to agree with what nobby as said apart from when I arrive I was concerned that the drum kit looked like it was from toys"r"us scrap department and I was not surprised it sound like one. The band seem to be plying different songs or maybe the timing was wrong and the feedback from the amps was just dreadful. To say they was a Queen terrible with a difference is properly right apart from the Queen terrible bit they was absolutely rubbish.

Is it acceptable to bring cushions to sit on at concerts in the cathedral? I have a bad back and I'm worried about the pews being hard seats!

There is no entrance fee but a donation box. i believe there is a charge if you want to do the tower, i couldn't do it at the time due to a service being conducted.

I am interested in seeing a concert here but am concerned by the 'free for all' policy on seating.
Do the huge pillars block views or are seats arranged around them so a good view is had by all?

We found it, very inviting, and everyone could sit where ever they wanted, they even supplied tea/coffee and biscuits. The pillars where not a problem.

Hi. I'm a keen amauter photographer, and love taking photos. Lots of them. I have found that when you are in the UK you can take photos of most places, but no flash photos.
