On Boxing Day we visited 'Beauty and the Beast' at the Anvil and our party of three adults and three children had an excellent experience. The cast came over as genuinely enjoying being part of a performance that was giving all the audience great pleasure. Well done ... and thanks!

I expect that it was 2004 at the NEC at the “Yes 35th Anniversary Concert” that I last saw Rick Wakeman in a live show. The performance tonight was billed as the “Even Grumpier Old Christmas Show” incorporating piano and keyboard performances.

The venue was very comfortable, clean and modern. It was, as expected, very busy when we arrived at about 19:10. Annoyingly quite a few of the patrons were not wearing masks, I know it was not illegal, but what is there ‘not to get’: COVID makes you ill enough to die!! Thankfully it is now mandatory to wear masks: I am pleased, for the safety of ‘me and my own’.

We made our way from the atrium into the auditorium using door B and were then, after queuing, we were then told we should have used door and asked to represent there. There were no visible signs on display in the atrium, or any advice on tickets to advise patrons which door to use!

We had bought drinks of coffee and wine (latter in 187ml glass bottles) and were able to take these into the auditorium. Other patrons went to the bar and were able buy drinks in glass glasses. Surely from a safety point of view this was a potential nightmare (maybe patrons tonight were considered as gentile and expected behave impeccably). A younger audience would most likely be differently treated and issued with plastic drinking vessels only.

The house wasn’t full but everyone appeared to really enjoyed what was played. Some of the jokes and stories retold by Rick between the performances of music were amusing, but there was a distinct lack of the kind of grumpiness that we saw on the TV shows.

We thoroughly enjoyed a great evening listening to a mixture of music from the Yes back catalogue, plus pieces from Rick’s solo albums, and his early career, whilst supporting artistes such as David Bowie and Cat Stevens. Mixed in was more than a smattering of Christmas music including a beautiful interpretation of Silent Night played as the encore.

It was announced that masks were to be worn and that photo’s and recordings were prohibited during the performance, but the gent sat next to me in seat M5 ignored the no pictures rule, and was ignored by the stewards.

Taking a trip to Basingstoke we went to the Anvil to book something, for our own well being and to help theaterland. I approached the foyer and asked politely for a programme or booklet, to see what's on. I was told abruptly and in no uncertain terms, that because of covid there where no programmes and to look on the web. Her manner was rude ,unhelpful and unexpected. It was like being told off a school. I'm 77 and don't like being spoken to in this manner. Maybe the receptionist needs to go back to school and learn some manners, or is that part of the job?

We were fortunate enough to have been able to go to the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment's spring concert featuring a fabulous programme of Mozart's last three Symphonies nos. 39, 40 and 41 the "Jupiter" named some years after the composer's death probably inspired by the extensive use of trumpets in the first movement.Played on period instruments which lend much to the authentic sound created the orchestra is quite unusual in not having a dedicated conductor in charge. it was of course a wonderful evening and hearing the final three symphonies played consecutively was a great feast with excellent refined playing and a wonderful flute performance by I believe Liza Beznosiuk on the flute for Mozart 40. Sadly given the current health crisis it is unknown when we will hear the like of that performance again or when the concert hall will be able to reopen.
We certainly count ourselves as privileged that we have an International Concert venue in our town within walking distance. My wife and daughter were further fortunate to enjoy one of the last performances before suspension of operations when they attended Firedance- a Latin dance extravaganza - a present for mother's day.

Very easy to get to from public transport. Good disabled access. Acoustics in both the main auditorium and The Forge very good.

Have been coming here (and The Haymarket) for years as it’s our ‘local’. Plays...music...children’s shows... panto... comedians...dance... we’ve seen them all. Just never thought to do a revue before!

It’s a lovely friendly venue which in my humble opinion has got comfy seats with adequate legroom...plenty of loos in the ladies...helpful staff ...and ample parking right above with a train station literally steps from the door.

I know this review should be for the actual venue but I have to mention the show we saw! Packed audience to see Anton and Erin...and we loved it! I was a bit hesitant as I thought it might be the two of them waltzing around all night. Far from it actually! Two great singers (love Lance Ellington’s voice...he used to sing in Strictly and is the son of the big band leader)...6 other dancers...and a fantastic orchestra. There was something for everyone...old style musicals right up to a fantastic take on The Greatest Showman...and a surprisingly entertaining Q&A section too. Anton comes across as a lovely man actually...not cocky at all as he sometimes appears to be on Strictly...lovely to the children in the audience...kind but not in the least condescending to a young lady he got up to dance with him. Now I can see why he has such a huge following! Very mixed audience.....men/women old/young. Thoroughly enjoyed it!

TOP TIPS!
Parking
. We find it much easier to come in to the car park up the ramp by Basingstoke station...and much quicker to get out too!
. Time your entry into the car park so your ticket is issued just after 7pm...ours was 7.05 and we had plenty of time. Only then can you buy your car park ticket BEFORE you go to the show! Nifty eh? Saves queuing up at the machines after with all the hoards!!
. Go round to the right and keep going when parking so you can park as close as possible to the ‘out’ slope.
. If you’re fit and healthy run up the flights of stairs...jump in the car with your pre paid ticket...and you’ll be out of the car park before most are even in the lift!

SEATING TIP
We’ve had seats all over to be honest but the ones we had for this show in the very centre of row K were great! There is a good ‘rake’ in the Anvil apart from the very front stalls so most seats are ok unless you get someone very tall or fidgety in front of you!

First time visit to this venue and would certinly go again. Logistically, very good for us due to the close proximity to the train station. Staff were helpful throughout, seating was very good, seemed to be more legroom than most other venues been to recently. Acoustics were good and overall very impressed. Would definitely go to future eventshere again.

Jim Davidson on tour. Not for the faint hearted. It was like being stransported back to the '70's, no subject left untouched. Lost the plot in the second half

We didn't go here to be preached to about Keiths politics! Sadly the music was a big let down with people not knowing 90% of what was sung and Keith droning on about Unicef and the tory party, at the end of the first set he asked people to return after the interval with a promise of two well known songs. We didn't bother along with others!
