Absolutely brilliant for 80s computer game geeks
2021年11月
We've been meaning to 'get our geek on' at the National Museum of Computing for ages and so decided to drop by on a very wintry day. Thankfully with colossal 1st generation computers all up and running, the place is toasty and warm.

TNMOC (as it's more widely known) hosts brilliant exhibitions surrounding the Code Breaking centre at Bletchley Park, including working replicas of the Colossus - and tons of excellent interactive displays (even great for kids) that give a flavour of the vital work that went on there during the 2nd World War.

There's also a working version of the first generation WITCH Computer, originally build by the University of Cambridge to teach students about computing way back in the 1940s and 50s, later donated to Wolverhampton College (which is where the name came from!)

Moving through the museum. 80s kids are in for a REAL treat as there are tons of microcomputers from the UK and further afield, really essential if (like me) you're a gaming geek and remember spending far too many hours playing on ZX Spectrums, Commodore 64s, BBC Micros and other 'greats' - it's a real hotch-potch of kit but there's lots of working examples for kids to again play with and play games on which was our favourite bit of the whole exhibition.

We spent a good couple of hours here, and the volunteers who work at the museum are extremely knowledgable and fascinating to listen to (though your younger kids might want to dash through to the gaming bits). There are also tons of artefacts from the last 60 years of computing, right up to the present day so mobile phone geeks will also find plenty to keep them entertained as well.

There is a VERY small gift shop and a place that serves refreshments but we strongly advise taking your own lunch. Picnic benches are provided outside in the car park (but we had a 'car picnic' as it was too cold and due to covid restrictions there's nowhere inside the museum to eat a lunch).

Even so, this is a brilliant place to visit if you're going to Bletchley Park to see the Bombe and other awesome things. Thoroughly recommended

A hidden gem that saved so many lives.

My wife and I had wanted to visit this place for years . and were delighted that we finally made it. Such a fascinating place where we learned about the secret team of ordinary heroes who helped to bring WW2 to a close much earlier than would have otherwise happened , through their quirky geniuses. If visiting you should definitely do the guided tour, where the excellent guides will explain all the history and add so much more to your visit. We learned so much and thoroughly enjoyed the day.

A must to visit place for anybody interested in computing

Great exposition, great hosts who know lots about the early computing history, BOMBE and Colossus. Computer languages timeline, history of how mouse devices evolved, real working examples of the early computers and much more. Story about Colossus, creation of Thomas Flowers is foundational and heavily overlooked due to information been classified for many years.

Understated but highly enjoyable and relevant museum.

Thoroughly enjoyable 1.5 hours and could have spent much longer. A great mix of historical and modern computing, well presented in context. A personal highlight was seeing the first computer my family owned set up and running. Excellent talk about Colossus, both technical and its place in history.

Fantastic, Volunteers went above and beyond

What an amazing place!! My husband is a computer science teacher so this clearly was right up his street. I thought I would find it a little dry but oh how I was wrong!!! The volunteers are INCREDIBLE and made the experience for me! So insightful, friendly and willing to answer a question at any level.

We will definitely be back as there was so much to see but I just want to say thank you to all the volunteers - you are amazing and your passion is contagious!

Fantastic Day
2021年8月
Every room was full of interesting things and wonder. I could still be there if they would let me. Really interesting and knowledgeable people through out the building. My favourite bit was the Collossus Mk2 rebuild, the Bombe, Enigma and the code breakers room was very informative, the presenter there was incredibly knowledgeable. The Large Systems room took me back to my early ICL and IBM days and blew my son's mind on a 4 MB disk that was about 1m in circumference.... which he took a picture of it with his mobile with a 256 GB micro SD card. He enjoyed the opportunity to programm in the software room and couldn't believe some of the retro personal computing opened his eyes. The Virtual Reality games gave him a "fix" of modern gaming before he left so he was back up to date before they dragged me away. This should be compulsory for people interested in computing, just so people see how quickly we moved forward.

Great Enigma decoding explanation
We got a great explanation of how enigma decoding works, much more clear than how it is presented at Bletchley Park thanks to the volunteer actually showing the various steps and inner workings. Also an impressive collection of old computer and video games

This museum is amazing for any computer lovers! The exhibits are brilliant and there are plenty of people there to give you information on each piece.
My 9 year old son was blown away with the amount of tech there! He was especially excited to see an actual Apple Lisa!!!!
I myself am not a tech lover but I found it really interesting and thoroughly enjoyed my visit.
The staff were super friendly and really knew their stuff!
